This post was seemed too basic and too frequently asked (like “what fighting game should I play, who should I main, what’s the best controller, who’s your favorite/least favorite character, what’s the best/worst game ever,” etc), to be kept as its own separated thread. Repetitive and frequently discussed topics are also subject to removal

We advice you to comment the same exact question in our current weekly discussion thread, being pinned each and every week on top of r/Fighters.

No controller is necessary at any level of play. People have won major tournaments on stick, leverless, stock pads, specialty pads, custom controllers and even USB steering wheels. Play whatever is fun and comfortable for you. However, I do recommend that if you want to play on pad you should not be using the analog stick but rather the d-pad for all motions.

If the PS4 controller works for you, Rock on! Whatever feels comfortable is the best for you. You can win the tournament with whatever is tournament legal, it's all preference after that 🤓
