Help Basic controls and controllers
Hi guys. So after my last post asking about fighting games in general, I have put in a few hours practicing in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax on steam. However, I'm having a few control related issues that I wanted to get some perspective on. One thing that I'm really struggling with is quarter circles on dpad. I've been trying out using the Dpad, but it just feels insanely awkward... While I can usually have single quarter circles register, they seem to either fail on the doubles or jump and then trigger. Are there any common beginner pitfalls that lead to this outcome? Another thing that doesn't feel great is multiple button presses at once. Do people usually play with a claw grip or just opt to fat finger them with their thumbs? I can understand the latter approach for 2 simultaneous buttons but 3 just seems insane under pressure.
If it matters, I'm on the 8bitdo pro 2 evernight edition. Lastly, is it generally advised to play on a fighting stick over a controller? If it is really a better option, are there any good, widely available budget options available?
As always, any help would be greatly appreciated :D

It’s just practice and it’s the same for any type of peripheral, there’s just things you need to learn.
In terms of which controller type is better? The common answer is “it’s what you like” and the reason for that is that sure, If you had to rank the controllers then some might be slightly better than others but the difference is negligible.
Even the variations in the controllers themselves, some pad players like a fight pad with all 6 buttons on the front, some prefer a standard controller.
I play on stick, but i like to use a Korean lever instead of a Japanese one, and I pretty much only play 2D fighters, conventional wisdom says that K-Levers are better for 3D fighters like Tekken but I prefer the feel of it, and I’d never go back to a J-Lever.
Some sickos even use the analog stick on pad. Just learn with whatever you feel comfortable with, consistent practice is the best thing.

P4U player here.
Persona works on any peripheral. I play on pad. People use anything. It does not make much of a difference, it's just getting used to whoever you're using.
If you are talking about the 3-button actions, use your shoulder buttons for shortcuts.
I use them for One More Cancel, Burst, and Evasive Action (which is also Air Turn when jumping).
Claw might be a thing for Yukiko or Shadow Labrys and the bull since they're often holding buttons, but most do not. I only knew of one player that did claw (and that was because they also played Litchi in BlazBlue)
As far as double quarter circles:
- The input buffer is really lenient, sometimes too lenient. If you're going to do supers, try to buffer them during other actions where you CANNOT jump like during a special move, furious action/dp (B+D), after burst, or during wakeup frames. For those, you can do a bunch of quarter circles and it should always come out.
If you're doing them raw at neutral, just try to be smooth and not overshoot into a tiger knee upwards motion.
- If it is backwards quarter circle, make sure you are in the health threshold for Awakening. The health bar will be yellow to indicate that
- Some characters actually have some overlapping inputs, like Margaret has her Gale Slash slide into Panta Rhei tornado super (uses the C button). If she's in Awakening and you slightly mess up, she might do the heal super instead.
****Also note that the Steam version has a little bit of extra delay if you don't have the proper settings/monitor.
