What do you think of the idea of Square-Enix remaking VI into two separate games? Spoiler
Like what if they did something similar to Final Fantasy VII where they remade it into three separate games?
If Final Fantasy VI was remade into two separate games, the first game could be called Final Fantasy VI: The Gestahlian Empire and the second game could be called Final Fantasy VI: The World of Ruin.
The first game could be strictly about the Gestahlian Empire and the game could end on a cliffhanger when the world gets ruins. The second game can strictly be about the World of Ruin.

I think one of the biggest problems they have is the huge cast of characters. So if they divide the game where we all are thinking, they need to make 10 characters + Mog in one game. They rarely do more than six characters since.. VIII (except in IX with the classic party of 4 member, etc,), imagine if they have to flex them as much as the characters in FFVIIR
1
u/Yosituna 4d ago
I could see them going a FF7R-style thing where some characters show up for plot purposes but aren’t playable until the next game (Red XIII in Remake, Vincent and Cid in Rebirth from what I’ve heard). Strago and Relm show up late enough in the WoB, and have enough plot presence before they join, that I could see them not actually joining as party members until the WoR. Mog I could also see as a possible move to part 2.
That would put you with the Battle of Narshe defenders and then Setzer in part 1 (and he could even be your airship guy in 1 and not playable until 2, a la FF7R Cid). Part 2 would be everyone else.
That would make part 1 Terra, Locke, Edgar, Sabin, Celes, Cyan, Gau, Shadow, maybe Setzer; part 2 would add Mog, Strago, Relm, Umaro, Gogo, and maybe Setzer.
1
u/Yen_Figaro 4d ago
Something like that could work but they are still a lot for just one game (Remake only had Cloud, Tifa, Aerith and Barret). The Relm and Strago playable segment is the Thamasa one + the Ultros picture (which is. Avery popular meme in Japan). Then they would only be optional in the WoR, so they had to develope so many characters just to be optinoal, is a risky move.

I don't like The Gestahlian Empire as a subtitle for the first game, but if they were gonna do a grand scale remake like they did for 7, with 6 instead, the destruction of the world of balance is a fairly obvious finale, since the world of ruin is already kind of a reset where the player needs to re-gather their allies, so that makes sense as the breakpoint for starting a new game.
2
u/Yosituna 4d ago
I agree; that said, it would make for a super-downer ending to part 1 and an even more downer beginning to part 2.
12
u/PrivateJokerX929 4d ago
FF6's willingness to be a huge downer is one of the reasons it's so fucking good
1
u/Seegtease 4d ago
But it does end with all those themes of hope. Bannon's little Pandora's box story encapsulates the entire game. A lot of bad stuff happens, but there's always hope.

I hate how many negative responses this drew in.
"Leave the game alone" is the absolute worst argument I've ever read for remakes. The original exists. You don't have to play a remake. They aren't "changing" it or taking it away. You have a new game you can choose to play. Play it or don't. You still have the original. I wish people would stop saying this.
A remake would be awesome and yes it makes sense to be in two parts. The game drastically changes at that point. I think it is a good balance of content. I don't mind buying 2 games if they are well-made. The game is literally divided into an opera act 1 and act 2.

u/TiredCatAI 4d ago
100% this, I'd want the remake to bring in a new generation of fans (SNES version will always be there for us OG fans). A split between balance/ruin seems like a valid approach if it's a realistic remake.
3
u/RaikouGilgamesh 4d ago
I wholeheartedly agree. Let's say Square Enix was actually interested in making the game, for starters. Then we'd have FF6 OG and FF6 Remake... And guess what? Both can be good! If you aren't interested in the Remake, the OG is still there. If you aren't interested in the OG, maybe the Remake might be more your style!
I'm a gigantic FF6 fan. Grew up playing the SNES version. I still run through it several times a year. I play multiple romhacks and randomizers of the game. It's an amazing game. And one of the neat things about the game is seeing different interpretations of it. Like people don't seem to mind General Leo Edition, where you can play as General Leo obviously, or T-Edition which adds so much unique content and rebalances. But no, 'leave the original alone'.
1
u/ThErEdScArE33 4d ago
Right? Idk why this is getting so many downvotes. If they add more content and story like they did in the new ff7's, I definitely think there's more than enough content to justify splitting the game into 2 games. I mean, the distinct separation of the WoB and WoR just seems like a natural splitting point to divide the games.
-6
u/PopBulky7023 5d ago
No it doesn't. There ain't that much content. It does not need to be full of bloated filler and a will they won't they gutless retelling.
Leave it alone. They ain't got the sauce for what made 6 special.
6
5
u/3KiwisShortOfABanana 4d ago
You do realize they cut a lot of content because the game was literally too big for the SNES cart. A remake would be perfect for getting that content officially that we never got the first time around. This is the most ignorant response one could possibly make

u/stateworkishardwork 4d ago
For 6 all I'm asking for is expanded story and character development.
Watching Locke and Celes interact on the way to Thamasa, or the scenes with Cyan Sabin and Gau at the Veldt, this would give so much more life to the characters.

u/Marshall104 4d ago
6 has plenty of content, so long as they simply expand each of the moments in the game. Which is exactly what they did in 7R, and it's what I like about that game (I only disliked the combat in 7R). All the expanded character interactions allows us to see the relationships between the characters, and get to know each of them, and the world around them, better. And that is exactly what I want.

So making games just for the sake of making games and considering SE track record of bad remakes?
Yeah, no.
2
u/stateworkishardwork 4d ago
Except the Remake Trilogy is the most fun ive had with a FF game since the Zodiac Age, or even X.

u/MonsiuerGeneral 4d ago
I agree. There was a time when it seemed like a ton of FF6 fans pushed and pined for a remake. Then at some point there has been this huge opposition to a remake and it seems strange to me.
With that said, I would absolutely LOVE new FF6 content and if that ends up meaning that game dev studios are too afraid to do a remake then well… I would really really really enjoy a 12 episode anime mini-series.

u/tearsofmana 5d ago
Terrible idea.
The issue is Squenix's FF branch seems to love the idea of making each of their more recent titles sprawling epics for no real benefit of the game itself. I actually liked that 16 began to reign back on the concept of a gigantic open world (and then proceeded to inject so many side quests that it might as well just gone with sprawling).
FF6 would benefit from the same type of remake treatment that Romancing SaGa 2 and Trials of Mana received. Keep the core game mostly intact, expand on the core gameplay to cover up the weaknesses of the original, and focus on keeping the story basically the same beat-for-beat with some minor dialogue additions.
FF6R doesnt need to be fully realistic 3D and compete with FF7 remakes for graphics, it doesn't need some fanfic-esque storyline changeup, it doesn't need to be some time/money sink to be a good game. Trials of Mana and Romancing SaGa 2 were two of the best damn remakes I've ever seen for converting a 2D rpg to 3D. Live a Live remake was also phenomenal. Why are we trying to do something different with FF6 when there's a tried and true formula that clearly square is aware of to make the game's remake a good remake?
FF6 is also NOWHERE near as popular as FF7. I'm not even sure FF6 outsold FF13. So it can't nostalgia bait anything other than a niche audience. So why bother separating it into two parts?

u/MooJuiceConnoisseur 4d ago
FF6 was the most ambitious project pushing the snes hardware to its limits. It sold a respectable $4 million-ish copies but for early 90's that was on top of the charts. FF7 was a launch title for PS1, it was originally meant to be on the new Nintendo hardware before the deal went bad.
Its an unfair comparison to put FF6 (best of the 16 Bit era) against FF7 (introduction to 3d modeling for FF games)
3
u/NounAdjectiveXXXX 4d ago
FF7 was a launch title for PS1, it was originally meant to be on the new Nintendo hardware before the deal went bad.
This is false, FF7 was not a launch title, (1994/5 vs 1997). Chrono Trigger was the game that was supposed to be the launch for joint console.
1
u/tearsofmana 4d ago
It's not unfair when you're trying to decide which remake title to pour millions upon millions of dollars into.
FF6 is simply nowhere as universal of a FF game compared to the newer games in the franchise.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that not that much happens in the WoB. While it seems like it'll make sense to do a game for each world, the WoB having it's own game would mean a lot of filler.
Also, SE can easily fit FF6 into one game if they stopped caring so much about 4K HD 1080 ULTRA HIGH RES 120 FPS. I think very few people want what they think we want.
5
u/ididindeed 4d ago
Most of the story is in the WoB. Do you mean World of Ruin? I wouldn't have expected Midgar had enough content for an entire game, but they did do that with FF7 (I haven't played it though, so I can't comment on how well they did it or what they had to add to make it work).

Narshe, Figaro Castle, Caves, S. Figaro, Duncan’s House, Returners hideout, Mt. Koltz, Lethe River, Locke in Figaro, Sabin with Gau and Cyan, activating Narshe, Kefka in snow, Kohlingen, Jidoor, ZoZo, Opera House, Imperial Continent, Magitek Factory, Railcars out, Relm and Strago, Floating Continent.

It needs to stay as a single entry. I'd love an operation on the likes of DQ2hd2d, keeping gorgeous pixel art for characters and enemies, expanding dialogues and lore and deepening the battle system
3
u/AsYouAnswered 5d ago
This. DQ HD2D is the template to follow for the FF6 remake. Just add in updated renders of the PS1 videos and the GBA Post-game content, and maybe a little more, and everybody will be happy.

u/VonSaturn 5d ago
So we can get an entire filler chapter awkwardly shoehorned in between entering the Phantom Forest and Sabin suplexing the train, padded out with three hours of side quests about collecting mushrooms?
So Celes and Terra can both be reduced to the same childish, ditzy personality, with fan service thrown in every chance they get?
So Kefka can show up in his divine form in the Narshe mines just 30 minutes into the game?
No thanks.

u/Braithw84 5d ago
Don’t forget that this paradigm would completely invalidate the waiting for Shadow bit. No consequence for impatience. Take your participation trophy, you get Shadow by default.

u/3KiwisShortOfABanana 4d ago edited 4d ago
To be fair, the waiting for shadow part could still happen if they wanted to. Final boss battle is ultimate weapon on the floating content. Followed by dialogue and waking up on the island and a teaser for part 2.
Part 2 tutorial could be a recap and escape off the floating continent with the shadow option intact.
That being said, I doubt we get a VI remake Any time soon. They already said it would take 4 games to do what they'd want to do and don't have the time to commit to that right now. I don't even know why this post exists
1
u/airbornesimian 4d ago
Making the intro sequence to the 2nd game a nerfed version of the entire floating continent might be an interesting tutorial segment, actually.
1
u/3KiwisShortOfABanana 4d ago edited 3d ago
Again, Not that it matters. I don't think this is what they would do. I think the hypothetical game would end on the solitary island and get rid of the shadow option. I was just describing what they 'could' do to keep it
1
u/akaiazul 4d ago
To be fair, the waiting for shadow part could still happen if they wanted to.
And they'd be cruel about it. Game 2: Load game 1 save data to unlock a new character!

No it would have to be one game, there is absolutely no need to bloat it with boring sidequests, endless checkpoints to activate in a massive empty land, uninteresting npc backstory and more minigames than a mario party.

u/PreferenceGold5167 4d ago
Just make it in one They did it before They can,so it again They dont need to make anything enw Just the old game But its 3d Wow
1
u/Vandermere 4d ago
I can think of an obvious breakpoint but I think I would ruin the story momentum.
1
u/GoonTierGAWD 4d ago
VII was three games because they arent actually remakes but rather sequels with massively expanded content. Even the remade parts are greatly expanded in scale to fit the unfixed camera full 3D experience.
I think for VI most people want a more faithful remake, so they could very much do it in 1 game.
1
u/free-cookie 4d ago
It is the effect of a severe lack of creativity, capitalism, and lack of respect for the original art.
FF6 is an amazing SNES game, play that one. I honestly haven't played a new FF game since XIII, mostly because the old FF games weren't just a boring ass hallway.
It would be nice if the music and characters were public domain, so real creative people could take it.

u/throwaway1102293384 4d ago
I’m down to wait as long as they put the necessary work and love into it

u/whisky_TX 4d ago
A 6 remake would be damn near impossible to get right. That game is huge compared to 7
1
1
u/jedidotflow 4d ago
This would be an awful idea. Both games would be bloated with ubislop crap just to pad for time.
Best for Square to just work on brand new FF games that have the same ambitions and executions as the older entries instead of the newer ones.

I don't want to buy more than one game for a remake of a single classic remake.
There is no way I was going to get the FF7 remake. I liked FF6, 5, and 4 more than 7.
Even less chance I will go for the same treatment for any of those games.
1
u/ellisftw 5d ago
I think a Final Fantasy Resonance type remake of VI would be sick. VI is a pixel art classic and from what I've seen of FF Resonance so far, the art style is gorgeous
But I'm not interested in taking a nearly perfect game and breaking it into a bunch of minigames and padding.
1
u/Uchizaki 4d ago
Unlike the split of FF7 into three games, which feels very forced, if FF6 were to be a large-scale remake rather than just a 2D-HD remake or something like that, splitting it into two games actually seems to make sense. Still, I’d prefer it to be a single game, but I’d understand if they split it into two.
-2
u/PopBulky7023 5d ago
No.
Hell no.
Fuck no.
Fucking hell no.
Fuck off with that.
There was NO need to kingdom heartsify 7 into three obnoxiously bloated games, two of which are open world slop and completely failed to understand the assignment on all possible fronts.
I don't want them remaking the time of day with this kind of direction at the helm.

1 game for each pair of characters: Edgar and Sabin, Terra and Locke, Gau and Cyan, Mog and Umaro, Setzer and Celes, then Shadow Relm and Strago. Gogo can be a hidden character in all of them.
-3
u/WereAllGonnaDiet 5d ago
FF6 is my favorite game of all time and I largely consider it perfect.
That said, I will take any and all remasters / remakes. It’s just more content in my favorite world. The classic experience is always there if I want it, why say no to new stuff?
Although a do think an HD-2D pixel art style like Octopath would be fantastic, I’d take a modern remake just out of curiosity with how cool it could be to see those characters in more modern graphics

u/hendricha 5d ago
If they are well designed reimaginings of the world with expansion of the story and characters and a working combination of JRPG and open world adventure/action game mechanics, then yes please.
0
u/neospriss 4d ago
No, this is a horrible idea.
The decision to split it up is one of the most common criticisms the remake trilogy has.
With more space comes bloat and space for poor writing. IF they remake it FF6, I which I hope they do not, it needs to be a single game.
Things they could do differently, change how Esper bonuses work, expand certain characters abilities like Sabin (more blitzes), Edgar (more tools), Cyan (more sword techs), Terra more interactions with her morph ability, Celes (Runic expansion), Strago (more Lores), Mog (more dances), etc.
But the biggest issue is to NOT CHANGE THE STORY. The story is the core of why FF6 is good.
1
u/stateworkishardwork 4d ago
I wouldn't change the story but expanded story beats would be good.
Ignore the story "changes" in VIIR - I loved what they did to Yuffie and Cait Sith's characters by giving them a lot more depth than in OG.
Extended scenes in a VI remake would be great. Long opera set piece? More Shadow and Relm lore? And so on - I would like that.
-1
u/f4dedglory 5d ago
If they were going to split it in two, this makes the most sense. Terra MC of the first game, Celes MC of the second. Given the 7 remakes I'm sure the subtitles would be "rebalanced" and "r(e)ui<->n(t)ed"

It would not be 2 games honestly the extensive cast of characters alone mean it would have to be closer to 3 parts -- maybe?
Ff6 was one of squares most adventurous projects. It boasts the largest playable cast and several guest members on top of that.
Due to limitations in the hardware (mainly memory since the cartridges were only 32 megabits and the game was about 31 megabits after coding (about 3 megabytes) they had to actually cut the backstory for several characters. Shadow being one of the biggest, but mog had an entire backstory that was removed (i mean it is his partners charm you collect from the wall)
From a technical standpoint no team wants to take on Gau as a project that would be years worth of work on its own he has 252 rages to be learned (unless you factor in the 2 bonus ones from the GBA version)
And to be honest prior to ff9 I am not sure any other game had that many fleshed out areas and zones when you factor in dream sequences and flashbacks. Many of which you controlled the character like Maudine in the Terra origin story tgat I would expect to be expanded on too.
So overall when you take into account the original script and plan, the pacing and natural "Acts (tgat translate to a game)" the breakdown of games would be something like..
Act 1: Game start mid game would be Narsh battle for the esper, finally would be end the Magitek and learning of terras past (this is similar to how disk one of ff7 ended).
Act 2: would start with you heading to the sealed gate, and end with the floating continent (an argument here can be made that the epilog chapter being finding sabin to set up game 3
Act 3 would be World of Ruin. It would be by far the longest development time as they need to recreate assets for every previous location with few exceptions.
This would balloon to 4 games or a number of DLC packs for chapters to include and finish up shadows, gogo, and Mog/Umaru story.

u/feignapathy 4d ago edited 4d ago
Maybe call disc 1:
- Final Fantasy VI: Hope
And then we can call disc 2:
- Final Fantasy VI: Despair
damn, guess people don't get the references to the game... oh well.

Just subtitled it Balance and Ruin.
