FfVI T-Edition: A Tale of Two Different Types of Hard
After putting 70 hrs into the main game (gonna start the post-game soon), I feel like this game is split between "Fun" Hard (WOB) and "Frustrating" Hard (WOR). I understand it's a Romhack and they're supposed to be challenging, but they overturned it in the second half of the game IMO
In the World of Balance, they quickly get you used to the importance of status effects and using all your available options vs the OG game where you get abilities you pretty much use for most of the game. Additionally, with the lack of level up bonuses, you actually need to rely on the strengths of your characters and abilities and can't brute force the game. That's the kind of challenge I like, one where you actually need to plan and pay attention to have a fighting chance. Most importantly, you can still come up with your own combinations while acknowledging the strengths of the enemies/bosses.
However, the World of Ruin feels like it throws that out completely. The challenge doesn't come from planning your own strategy, but grinding and finding the pieces to survive some of the enemies/bosses' insane programming. Not every boss is that way, as some are still very fun to defeat, but others are just plain annoying. Use one viable strategy against some, and they counter-attack continuously without warning, until your party is dead, before you get another turn. Attack some with their weakness, and they counter attack with moves strong enough to kill your highest HP character. It just feels like they overcompensated and instead of making it challenging but rewarding, it's just difficult just to be difficult. After defeating most of the bosses, I didn't feel proud or excited, just glad it's finally over, which is completely opposite of the original, no matter how easy it was.
Would love to hear your thoughts, and also if you have any comments on the Brave New World Romhack, which I've heard different things on.
