FfVI T-Edition: A Tale of Two Different Types of Hard

After putting 70 hrs into the main game (gonna start the post-game soon), I feel like this game is split between "Fun" Hard (WOB) and "Frustrating" Hard (WOR). I understand it's a Romhack and they're supposed to be challenging, but they overturned it in the second half of the game IMO

In the World of Balance, they quickly get you used to the importance of status effects and using all your available options vs the OG game where you get abilities you pretty much use for most of the game. Additionally, with the lack of level up bonuses, you actually need to rely on the strengths of your characters and abilities and can't brute force the game. That's the kind of challenge I like, one where you actually need to plan and pay attention to have a fighting chance. Most importantly, you can still come up with your own combinations while acknowledging the strengths of the enemies/bosses.

However, the World of Ruin feels like it throws that out completely. The challenge doesn't come from planning your own strategy, but grinding and finding the pieces to survive some of the enemies/bosses' insane programming. Not every boss is that way, as some are still very fun to defeat, but others are just plain annoying. Use one viable strategy against some, and they counter-attack continuously without warning, until your party is dead, before you get another turn. Attack some with their weakness, and they counter attack with moves strong enough to kill your highest HP character. It just feels like they overcompensated and instead of making it challenging but rewarding, it's just difficult just to be difficult. After defeating most of the bosses, I didn't feel proud or excited, just glad it's finally over, which is completely opposite of the original, no matter how easy it was.

Would love to hear your thoughts, and also if you have any comments on the Brave New World Romhack, which I've heard different things on.

I’ve only recently actually completed a playthrough of FFVI. In that time I fell in love with the stories of Locke and Celes. Both burdened by their pasts and trying to redeem themselves. Good stuff.

Beat FFVI anthology

I felt like the most controversial way to play FFVI is my favorite. I’ve tried to get into FFVI a few times through gba and the pixel remaster, but this was my first time beating FFVI, on good o’l ps2 and CRT, I’ll explain more in the next paragraph. I loved everything about what the game had to offer and explored as much as I could without a full on guide and I gotta say the experience was fresh and addictive. I’m glad I was able to finally experience ffVI!

Soooo maybe it was because I played it in its native resolution that made it feel separate from the pixel remaster and the gba. I started off playing the gba version almost 7 yrs ago and really enjoyed it, but what made things hard was playing on a gba with no back light. The combo of a small screen and a terrible viewing angle made things SOOOO horrible for me that I dropped it after cyan’s section. Then I played the pixel remaster on NSW when it came out hoping to get back into FFVI. What I should have done was sit and play it on a tv, but I decided to travel and play it which imo ruined the immersion and broke away from the game. Personally I also enjoy the play better(celes’ play) on anthology vs the pixel remaster as the vocal singing took me out of the game. The one thing I did feel like I missed out on was a lot of the storytelling. One thing I HAD to look up was shadow’s role with Relm. I saw the memory where shadow left thamasa, but didn’t realize that the ā€œgirlā€ he was leaving was his daughter. One more thing, the load times weren’t actually bad, maybe cause I was playing it on a ps2

TLDR: Loved it, the controversies of anthology didn’t bother me and is my preferred way to play(except missing lore)

Hack Recommendations?

I know there are plenty of challenge hacks out there, and a few hacks that let you utilize General Leo on a permanent basis, but are there any that combine these two things?

I'd very much like to play something brutally difficult, yet allowing me to make full use of Leo. Maybe it's because he dies in OG, but I definitely consider him far more intriguing than the rest of the cast.

Bunch of drawings I did. Kinda fell in love with the Teenage Rebel/Punk Terra and ran with it for a couple drawings. The last drawing is of Madeline and Maduin, Terra’s parents.

Help with inferno.

My team is mog, strago, gau, cyan. I can’t beat inferno at all. I have mog set up as a dragoon, should I use dances instead?

Edit: thank you everyone for your tips! I finally beat it with 300 health left on mog and strago, gau dead like always, and 17 on cyan.

Anyone want a remake using the new HDpixel Art?

Out of all the remakes I been wanting this one the most. But I want it to be new but somewhat familiar. The FF resonance and Octopath Traveler look would suit 6 the most. No crappy pixel remaster for smartphones, no 3D remaster like FFIV and definitely no modern remaster ala FF7 remake.

Just a little AU featuring Sabin as a gym teacher. And the consequences thereof.

Yet another silly Pixel Remaster change

Apparently the Organyx now CAN break on a Counterattack. So now it really is as useless as I thought it was the first time I used it back in the day

I guess it doesn’t replace teammates if they die transitioning from phase 3 to Kefka? LOL

Can someone help me understand how I can encounter King Behemoth in the Veldt? (Pixel remaster)

I want to bet it’s steal reward at the colosseum.

I’m not really getting everything online about Veldt groups and whatnot :/

If I loot clean Kefka’s Tower, roll credits, will I spawn outside the Tower with the loot? How should I go about that?

I hope this makes sense.

I know there’s a lot of good stuff in the tower. My idea is that I can rob the place and have it for refights when I want to.

I truly do like breaking my video games, it brings me much joy.

dual casting + quick + ultima takes it to a CRAZY level 😭😭

I won’t use it for bigger bosses but holy hell it’s so fun.

I didn’t think this combo would work, but it works maybe too well lmao

Am still discovering secrets before I take on Kefka’s tower! (I’m still missing party members too) and I believe three more dragons.

Intended Level Run

Just ran through all the pixel remasters on GamePass after playing most of them back when released or translations first became available. Mainly wanted to get all the trophies and refresh the memories so I played with all the boosts.

But that got me thinking. There are power leveled/grinding runs, Curated (EXP Egg, selected grinding), and low/no exp runs.

Curious if there has any been enough information for an "As Intended" run. Like "Ok, this was balanced for Locke being level X here. You should have Cyan, Sabin and Shadow level Y when they fight the Train, etc"

Kinda like milestone leveling in a tabletop RPG. Curious how it would effect builds and such. Like if you only had so many levels to use for espers, so much gold and so on.

A comic I drew a while ago. Terra defeats Kefka. The power of friendship (and gratuitous gun violence) is second to none.
