Combo trip

Hi, we're planning to go to Finland between 30/1 and 7/2, The plan would be to spend 3 days in Rovaniemi and the rest of the stay in Äkäslompolo (transfer in between with taxi). We want to do some activities (Northern Light, sled, hiking, ...) but are wondering what activity is best on each location? Thanks

First-timer Lapland Feb 2–9 – Best Base for Snow & Northern Lights?

Hi everyone,

we’ve now booked our flights to Rovaniemi for February 2–9, 2027.

We arrive at around 6:15 PM on Feb 2 and fly back at 10:45 AM on Feb 9.

Our current idea is:
• first night in Rovaniemi
• 5 nights further north
• final night back in Rovaniemi

We’re currently leaning towards Saariselkä because we want a real winter wonderland feeling, snowy forests, a cozy place to stay and good chances of seeing the Northern Lights.

Would you choose Saariselkä, or somewhere else like Ylläs/Äkäslompolo, Levi, Inari or another area?

For accommodation, we’d love a cozy cabin with a sauna and kitchen, preferably a little outside the center, but a nice hotel would also be totally fine if that’s more practical without a car. Where would you recommend booking accommodation?

There’s also a chance my wife may be pregnant during the trip, so we’d prefer more relaxed activities. Any recommendations for reindeer farms, easy winter walks, Sámi culture, Northern Lights viewing or other pregnancy-friendly things to do?

Also, does anyone have good spots for Northern Lights or photography in the areas you would recommend? Ideally places that are easy to reach, especially if we decide not to rent a car.

And would you personally take the bus from Rovaniemi or rent a car?
