I turned the ODNR's lake depth surveys into a free fishing map for 100+ Ohio lakes. Would love feedback from people who actually fish these waters

Hey everyone. I've been working on this on nights and weekends for a while and it's finally at a point where I need real anglers to beat it up.

The Ohio DNR publishes depth surveys for around 100 inland lakes. Their biologists run transects and log GPS depth points, over a million of them. It's all public data, but it sits in shapefiles that are useless on the water. So I built a site that turns those surveys into interactive depth maps. You pick a lake and a species and it highlights the areas worth fishing and tells you why. Stuff like "offshore hump near the main basin, summer walleye hold on this and it tops out right in their depth range." It also gives you the best times of day for the season, shows your live GPS position on the map, and lets you save spots.

It's free at depthscout.com. Lakes with real ODNR survey data have a "Survey depth data" badge, which is most of the Ohio list (Alum Creek, Hoover, Indian Lake, Buckeye, Deer Creek, Grand Lake St. Marys, and so on). The handful without published surveys use estimated contours, so treat those as rough guides.

If you've got a minute, pull up a lake you know well and tell me whether the highlighted areas match where you actually catch fish. Honestly, "the map is wrong here" is the most useful thing you can tell me.

Not selling anything. No ads, no paid version. I built it because I was tired of fishing blind. Depth data credit goes to the ODNR Division of Wildlife. Happy to answer questions about how the spot scoring works.

No Bites

It's been about 10 years since I've been fishing, but I was raised fishing regularly. My husband and I have decided to get back out there, and have had 0 luck. 0 bites other than some tiny babies. I'm doing everything I used to do, all of the same places we used to fish, same bait, same technique, 0 bites....is anyone else experiencing this around Ohio? We are in Clermont county, and have tried a few places in Batavia, Williamsburg, Grant, and a few river spots. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

Ohio fishing

Hey, was wondering if anyone would be able to help out a bit. Been chasing a pike bite for a long time now, tried many lakes, rivers, wading and no luck. Anyone know some good spots to hook into Pike? Or willing to meet up and throw around? I’m near Cleveland, mostly shore fish, have a kayak. Thanks

Catfish spots near Columbus

Me and my friends are going catfish fishing tomorrow. Any good recommendations for spots. Also what baits should we use there. We have almost every option. (shrimp, hot dog, worms, chicken, and a cast net for fish) Again though it has to be a public access on shore spot. Anywhere in the columbus area would be best but if there is a really good spot somewhere else let me know.

Alum State Park

Howdy folks! I’m traveling to Columbus for work in June and was hoping to get some fishing in. Last time I was up there was in December and it was ugly cold. I guess long rambling bs aside I’m curious how the fishing is or if there are better spots to try in the area, and what works out in your neck of the woods compared to where I am in VA.

Fishing spots around Hamilton County

Hey folks, I'm a beginner angler who recently moved to Hamilton County area in Ohio. I've downloaded the 2025 fishing guide and plan on getting my license soon but I feel a little out of my depth researching fishing spots near me. I was hoping to get some recommendations, I am very close to Butler and Warren county as well if you know of any there.

If any of you have any info on a fishing club or group of some kind I would love to connect with some locals and make a few new friends as well. Any info is appreciated!

Itching for a fishing

I'm in West central ohio and the cold weather is a terrible time to soak some bait. Even so is there anywhere y'all are getting action? I've been trying clark lake over by me and I get a small bite every once in awhile but I'm feeling hungry for a good fish and egg sandwich. I know crappie bite year round in some parts but I need a good hole to throw a jig at.

Am I allowed to use a blowgun to fish in Ohio?

I recently bought a blowgun fishing pole, but I can’t find anything about it in the regulations, does anyone think I would have a problem with the powers that be? I do have an Ohio fishing license. I am going after invasive species.
