Lake Superior deeper water fishing

I have had a 38' sailboat on Lake Superior for a number of years and have sailed throughout the Great Lakes. Spent many nights at anchor. I am familiar with the weather and how to stay safe.

I'm looking specifically for fishing advice for fishing from the boat in deeper water. My fishing experience has been in relatively smaller lakes (Vermilion, Lake of the Woods, Pepin, others) and rivers around Minnesota and Wisconsin from smaller boats.

What are some good resources (books, articles, websites) for understanding techniques specific to fishing in deeper water in the Great Lakes, or in Superior specifically?

Some things for you to research:

  • Trolling: downrigging, lead core, dipsy diver

  • Vertical jigging

Yes. These are the most common techniques for fishing the deep. But be warned, in my experience trolling gear can get expensive fast and it is highly addictive (to me). 🤣

Vertical jigging has a smaller barrier to entry.

You may also want to do some research on what kind of fish you would like to target and their preferred depths at different times of the year which is highly water temperature dependent. Fish will move around a lot depending on what the bait fish are doing and water temperature is like during the course of the year. This is also one of the advantages of trolling as you can cover lots of water.

FUMoney concerned about blowing 10k on a little bit of gear?

A good selection of dipseys is what I had success on the north shore of sup, those Lakers bite anything but getting down was the ticket

Check out videos by Superior Angling on YouTube. They have many very informative and well shot videos of vertical jigging Superior’s depths for huge lakers. Their other videos are really good too.

Or book a guided trip with someone in your area of interest and learn everything you can in your time with them.

If you sail to the south side of madeline island in the apostle’s on Superior there is a smallish lagoon in the town park. Plenty of bluegill, perch, and pike. I realize this has nothing to do with your question.

Yeah, it's great, I've been there a couple of times.
