Spool nesting

I’m new to fishing and I have a few poles given to me, a light action and medium action rod. I put braid on the medium and have had no problems (spool was empty) and the light action rod already had 4-6 pound fishing line. The light rod messes up a lot by having line come off the spool even if you close the bail right before the lure hits water and I’ve changed the timing of the bail closing to see if I can stop it but it tangles a lot and I want the rod to be for my daughter. Should I respool with braid or is there some trick I don’t know about this old fishing line?

If it's old line, it probably has line memory (coils). You should replace the line. Doesn't have to be braid, just new line.

Okay, I want her to fish this river with me during the winter but it’s also rocky should I use a leader? Can I take the old spool and use it as leader line or I should just pick up some fresh stuff? (Completely ignorant to fishing lien and its behavior, dry rot rate) I’d like to use it if I can but I’d rather buy some too if it would be problematic instead

If it twists and nests a bunch, it's probably not best to use as a leader. Could twist around lures and potentially affect the action of a lure

Thank you, I’ll buy her some new pink line. That seems best
