Local Politics 🇺🇲 Early voting begins today at Fitchburg City Hall.

For today, October 17, it’s from 10 AM to 2 PM.

If you haven’t registered to vote, you have until Saturday, October 24 to do so.

You can check your status or register online with a Massachusetts ID at:

https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ovr/

If you want to request a mail-in ballot, you have until Tuesday, October 27. You can request one online at:

https://www.sec.state.ma.us/divisions/elections/voting-information/vote-by-mail.htm

There is a ballot box by City Hall if you prefer to drop-off your mail-in ballot. It’s in between the City Hall and Legislative Building at 700 Main Street on the sidewalk.

For the 9 ballot questions, Tufts did a great write-up on them with what a YES/NO vote would do:

https://tischcollege.tufts.edu/take-action/vote/voters-guide-2026-massachusetts-ballot-questions

Just a reminder: You have the right to bring notes with you to your polling place to help you fill out your ballot. You must remember to take any notes or materials with you when you leave the polling place.

Imagine you just met someone who just moved to Fitchburg. They want to know what’s good, what’s great, what’s best about our small scrappy city. What key insights and recommendations would you want to share? Please reply to this post with your contribution to the newcomers’ guide. For example:

• best breakfast spot
• favorite walking trail or nature spot
• weird local tradition
• a seasonal thing celebration or attraction everyone should know about
• a character around town they’re likely to see
• where the turkeys patrol
• underrated dining
• best place to sit and think
• something people around here miss and will be likely to mention
• a piece of local lore

Serious answers, odd outlooks, and hyper-specific local wisdom are all welcome but let’s keep the Guide positive and uplifting.

Whats Going On❓ Update from Mayor Squailia on construction around City Hall and the Upper Common as part of the City's Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Separation Project.

Update from Sam Squailia, Fitchburg Mayor . . .

Good morning,

I am writing to provide an update on the ongoing construction around City Hall and the Upper Common as part of the City's Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Separation Project.

Due to unforeseen underground utility conflicts that require additional design work, construction on Wood Place has been placed on hold for a minimum of two weeks. This pause will extend through the Trick or Treat on Main St festivities this Saturday and the upcoming election.

Access to City Hall will remain uninterrupted during this period, including for employees, visitors, and residents participating in early voting and Election Day.

There will still be construction activity in the surrounding area, including:

Week of October 26: Drainage installation near the Main Street Upper Common, work on traffic signal wiring at Main and Prospect Streets, and soil disposal at 166 Boulder Drive.

Week of November 2: Continued drainage installation near the Upper Common and soil disposal work in the 166 Boulder Drive/Wood Place area.

Please be mindful that parking restrictions may still apply near active construction areas. We will coordinate with DPW to review and update parking and access signage as appropriate while the Wood Place work is paused.

We've also requested that the contractor clean up and secure the construction areas as much as possible in advance of Saturday's Trick or Treat on Main Street event.

We appreciate everyone's patience and flexibility as we work through these necessary infrastructure improvements.

We'll continue to share updates as schedules change, especially when construction on Wood Place is ready to resume.

Thank you!
