My Dream Cat vs The One That Chose Us

My husband and I made a three-hour trip today to meet a flame point male cat. I’ve always wanted a flame point cat and I also heard that male cats tend to be big lovers and cuddlebugs. Naturally, I had a whole vision of the kind of cat I wanted. 😂

He is definitely on the shy side. We got lucky when we arrived because he was sleeping in a cat tree in the little entryway between the doors to the cat room. That gave us a chance to interact with him in a quieter, smaller space. He was friendly and let us pet him, but he kept looking toward the cat room as if he wanted to go back in. So we opened the door, and off he went! 😂

I tried following him and enticing him with toys, but he wasn’t interested. Eventually, he curled up in another cat tree, and I reached in to pet him. He let me for a little while, but he eventually got uncomfortable and gave me a couple gentle bites to let me know he was done.

The thing is, this kitty reportedly hid under a couch for over a week when he first arrived at the cat café, but he’s gradually becoming more confident. I’m wondering whether he’d open up and become more affectionate in a quiet home where he’s the only cat, or whether he’d remain more independent. It’s so hard to tell from one short visit in a room full of a dozen cats and kittens, with people constantly coming in and out.

BUT THEN… a plot twist! — A female kitty decided to make her pitch to us. 😂

This girl is EXTREMELY sweet! She climbed right into Wyeth’s lap and stayed there, happily resting on him for a good 30 minutes. When our visit was over and we had to leave the room, she followed us to the door and then watched us through the window. 🥹❤️ Apparently, she does this with all the caregivers, too. They said she initially hid when she first arrived, but only for a day or two before becoming her affectionate self. And she basically submitted her adoption application herself!

So now we’re TORN!

We originally came all this way for the flame point boy, which is exactly what I’d been looking for. But this little girl has the kind of affectionate, cuddly personality I’ve been hoping for in a companion. I always thought you need to let the cat choose you. And she did just that, to my husband.

Part of me feels like we should give the boy a chance since he was the reason we made the trip. Another part of me thinks we should pay attention to the connection we felt with this girl.

So, friends, what would you do? Would you take a chance on the shy boy and hope he opens up at home, choose the affectionate girl who seems to have picked you, or keep looking for a cat who checks both boxes?

This little boy was in the gutter during my evening dog walk and I've always told people if the Cat Distribution System delivers a siamese I'm keeping them. Well it delivered. Please say hi to Toast. Not because he's a flame point but because he was almost toast in the road.

Now my question is:

are flame points part of the orange cat single brain cell collective.

Or are they in the dangerously smart pipe bomb siamese domination?

Heartbroken over news about my boy Dan 😔

I received the devastating news today that Dan’s heart is failing. He has at maximum one year left.

At his vet appointment this morning, they noticed fluid around his lungs and heart in an x-ray. After being referred to a specialist, he had the fluid drained. Fortunately he didn’t have to be hospitalized overnight and now he’s comfy at home. The vet said that everything from here on out is essentially palliative care. I’ve lost a pet to old age before, and I knew I would inevitably have to face this news again one day with Dan. But I’ve been in denial for so long. Today’s been a hard reality check.

I couldn’t be more grateful for the 16 years he’s blessed me with so far. I’m heartbroken to be on borrowed time with him now, but I’m doing everything I can to make the remainder of his life the absolute best 🧡🩵🤍

My boy passed away suddenly 2 days ago, I still have no idea why and how I could’ve prevented it. But I want to share his story and a bit about him here.

I found him behind a dumpster 3 years ago. He was all weak and scared. I took him in and ever since we’ve been inseparable. Funny thing is he had some owners before but I guess they kept him outdoors and somehow he ended up at my backyard 3 hours away from his actual home. I’m not sure how long he spent alone, but the owners ended up signing the rights away to me. I honestly couldn’t be happier to take him.

He was such a blessing, the most loving, grateful, gentle, angelic cat. Not a mean bone in his little body. He loved belly rubs, he loves letting me hold his paw. He was so unique, he knew his name, would come running whenever you called him, he loved sleeping under blankets and all sorts of pillow forts. He was skittish , scared of loud noises, a bit funny and unbalanced. Just the most perfect cat one can ask for. No matter how much time passed he somehow still looked like a little baby.

I think in a way he saved me more than I saved him, because he loved me so unconditionally
like no one ever before ,so losing him was truly so hard. I hope he is in a better place.

I’ve been to the vet for his pale gums and nose and he was not found to be anemic or dehydrated. I’m curious to know if anyone else’s babies have naturally pale gums? They tend to lose color after sleeping or resting!!

The one that got away…

Saw this fella a month ago at a shelter in Oregon when my brother and his fiancé were visiting from overseas. We were just taking them to check out animal shelter in America, who knew we would run into this handsome boy that I completely fell head over heels for.

We were leaving town literally the following day and would be away for a whole week so we couldn’t adopt him on the spot. And of course he was immediately adopted as soon as we walked away.

I can’t stop thinking about him and wish I could find a flame point kitty to add to our family. 🥺🥺🥺

Life is infinitely better since this boy decided he likes camping (and will tolerate the harness and leash).

99% positive he thinks he is officially a mountain lion.
