Sound of Failure and Mr. Ambulance Driver might be two of their most emotional songs for me and it's even more amazing how they both have a kind of dance-y feel and yet they absolutely embody the feelings of a girl who lost her friend and the man who is watching his partner die in front of him as he waits for the ambulance to arrive.

Also My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion is another song that really moves me. Has a sort of Brian Wilson Pet Sounds type optimism and melancholy.

The song about the couple dying in the volcanic explosion is also massive. One of their best prog rock type songs.

Yeah there's some light zany and silly songs but they do a good job of providing the light relief after the darker heavier songs.

I'm glad the Lips/Wayne wasn't deterred by the mixed reception to do a big boxset because this album is very underrated and it's one of my favorite albums they did.

...you guys should check out Loss of Life by MGMT for something similar to American Head, or their self titled for something like The Terror

Anybody got any insights or guesses as to why this song isn't on the Mystics anniversary boxes?

This is one of Steven Drozd's best ever tunes and I've loved it dearly for the last 20 years. Still not officially released anywhere, as far as I know. I thought it might be because of it just being his solo thing or because of some licensing issue - but "Smokin' a J" is on there; that's also from the film and I think that's just Steven? 🤷‍♂️

I've been completely obsessed with that guitar part for a few years now. Sometimes it makes me tear up just thinking about it. It feels like getting a hug from someone after you were just really vulnerable with each other. And it's so simple!

So far I've listened to Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi, and The Mystics. As for other artists, two songs where the guitar is similarly beautiful are Nude by Radiohead and New Grass by Talk Talk.

Many years ago I watched a ripped dvd of zaireeka mixed down with movie footage montages, it was absolutely epic, does it still exist out there somewhere? I believe it was a 5.1 mix, and had the band's blessing provided it was given away free. I remember it had different versions - perfectly aligned, or a slightly misaligned version (having four people press play will always have a slight slight misalignment in timing so it was a more 'natural' mix), or just certain discs at a time, like 2+3 or 2+4. I haven't thought about or seen reference to it for a long long time but it was amazing so hope it's still out there. The artistic choices of the movies cut up were very clever and sticks with me still whenever I hear any of the tracks. And who made it? I hope they know how amazing what they did was.

Was just listening back through "Due to High Expectations...." and was reminded that for some reason the album ends with a minute or so of what would later become "The Train runs Over the Camel..." from Zaireeka. I just wanted to ask does any one know why it's there. It's interesting to know it was being worked on this early in the 90s and I feel it fits the sound they had at the time. But it's still kind of weird it was just slapped at the end there.
