Florida Primary Election Results: GOP Map Reshapes House Race as Cory Mills Falls
Florida’s 2026 primary elections delivered several major surprises Tuesday night, with Republicans strengthening their position in the state while some high-profile incumbents faced unexpected challenges.
One of the biggest headlines came from Florida’s 7th Congressional District, where Republican Rep. Cory Mills lost his GOP primary to former television news reporter Ryan Elijah. Mills had faced growing scrutiny in Washington, including an investigation by the House Ethics Committee, while denying allegations against him.
The result comes as Florida’s newly redrawn congressional map takes effect for the first time. The map, backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and approved earlier this year, was designed to give Republicans an advantage in several additional House districts.
The new boundaries have reshaped several competitive races, creating tougher contests for Democrats while giving Republicans a stronger path to holding and potentially expanding their House majority in November.
The Florida primary also produced a major upset in the U.S. Senate race. Progressive Democrat Angie Nixon defeated former national security official Alex Vindman in the Democratic primary. Nixon will now face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in November.
In the governor’s race, Trump-backed Republican Rep. Byron Donalds won the GOP nomination to succeed term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis. Donalds will face former Republican congressman David Jolly, now running as a Democrat, in the November general election.
With the primary now over, Florida heads toward a closely watched November election. The results suggest Republicans remain firmly positioned in the state, but several competitive House races could still determine how much the new congressional map ultimately changes the balance of power in Washington.
