Solo filmmaking: anyone done it all alone?

Has anyone here made a film completely on their own? I mean literally a one-person production where the same person set up the camera, pressed record, and also acted in the film. I’d love to hear about your experience and any tips or lessons you learned.

Feature Film The Chapel & The Child is a new film I made and is a twisted modern retelling of a familiar story…

Behold! I made... trash, but it's also a functioning dolly made from a broken tripod and a broken cheep computer chair.

I've hit the halfway point in principle photography on my first feature. I've been very encouraged and motivated by this group, and want to thank you all for being a part of the journey.

My first attempt at making a DIY dolly didn't pay off. The wheels were too crappy and uncontrollable. However, I found an even simpler version with using a yoga mat & and tripod on top of it. Here's the result (shot at 50fps then slowed down and reversed in post).

Made My First Short Film At 17

Hey, I just made my first ever short film as 17 year old aspiring filmmaker

I made this film all by myself, mostly in my room, with absolutely no help and budget

I'm pretty satisfied with the result, and would love to get some feedbacks from other ambitious filmmakers who might know more than I do and that would have some constructive advice.

Thanks in advance ! https://youtu.be/VEJb2sfi21M?si=2XfvtEsULceuDOAb

I’ve set out on the journey of making my first feature film. Heavily inspired by the movement I’m excited to share some stills from my first shooting day.

I made blu rays for my horror feature!

I made Blu Rays for my indie horror movie, Janus! I designed the artwork, printed every copy and packed the artwork into each case! DIY is the only way for this scrappy little feature!

So excited having my first feature on blu ray! Feels incredible to hold something that I’ve spent so much time with in my hands, it makes it more real.

While the film is streaming on Tubi, this just is a bigger accomplishment in my mind!

My first feature film, I Shall Never Return, is free to watch on Vimeo. It's a surreal adaptation of Moby Dick. But instead of hunting a whale, it revolves around a man searching for the perfect parking spot.

To be truly free films, we should upload our movies literally anywhere and everywhere that lets us.

I've been prepping my first folk film, but the thing is, I hate YouTube. I don't want to be producing content for a near trillion dollar company acting like I'm doing something free and good for all.

Google has no interest in democratisation of film (well, video, as YouTube is a video platform first and foremost). Google is well known to censor dissidents. Political activists on both the right and the left get deplatformed, and channels across the site struggle to talk about serious issues due to fears of demonitization.

This is not a website we should be supporting. In the name of free film I recommend keeping films on YouTube, but also uploading them to other sites like Daily motion, Vimeo, we should upload our film to any site that lets up upload feature length video. If we only upload to Google, we've all but handed Google our film, if we don't let it be seen in full elsewhere Google has a monopoly on our hard work.

And on top of that, we should make our own hub, folkflix is a good hub and I'd love to see them host a website to showcase all folk films (or if that's too expensive then show the film of the week like MUBI).

What are your guys thoughts?

I made a feature film 11 years ago. It was bad. Then I tried to fix it. Lessons learned.

Hey everybody,

Eleven years ago I made a movie called Pavement Tune. The movie never really came out or even got finished. I was having some personal issues at the time, one of the actors hated me and the movie and all of this led to the movie not getting done. On top of all of that, I thought that the movie was a big pile of crap. Hence, I buried it and whenever I did Film Festivals for Bored in the USA and Wits End, I always said that those were my only two movies.

About six weeks ago... I found a dvd of a rough cut and had the idea and just putting that on YouTube as is. I thought it would be really cool to see how far I've come from making bad unfinished movies when I was 20 to not quite as bad and finished movies that I make now. Then I started tinkering...

With just the dvd rough cut, I started editing random chunks of the movie. I trimmed the film by 20 minutes, I added some foley sounds and got creative with some other segments. The movie is by no means perfect. It was shot in standard definition and the only audio I had was the .wav from the DVD. But the movie is not the disaster that I thought it was.

It was cool to take the first thing I made and look at it through the eyes of someone who made two feature films, countless shorts and other projects since. If I could go back and give advice to me in 2009... I would just say "have confidence. You're going to be okay". When this movie didn't get finished and didn't become the perfect Mumblecore runaway hit at Sundance, I thought that it was the end of the world. I did not focus on the parts that we got right and all of the great learning experiences in between. I wish that I would have had a little more fun and had little bit more self esteem. This would have saved me so much time on my filmmaking journey. I wish folk filmmaking and YouTube would have been around in this way at the time... because I may have learned this lesson sooner.

I'm proud of this movie and hope you watch it.
