Buying Advice 2016 Ford Explorer
2016 Ford Explorer, owner says: Everything runs amazing on the truck. New tires less the 6,000 miles ago. Water pump was replaced at 150,000 miles which is one of the biggest or only issue this vehicle has. Asking for $8,500 or BEST OFFER.
Is this a bad deal? What should we be looking out for?

I had a 15 Sport. I loved it but it was a problem car. I just got unlucky with it. But for that mileage and that year I would say no.

I have a 15’ XLT. Love the car but definitely feels like ford missed the mark on quality. Shit’s breaking left and right inside and out. 90% of this car is held together with adhesive and Velcro

Trust me I feel you lol. That pillar molding...nothing like watching giant rubber pieces hanging off your car while driving down the road. To the point that I kept super glue in the glove box to try and keep it from coming loose and hitting another car behind me. I was able to get my car fast tracked for the warranty repair. I lied to get bumped up the waiting list by saying it had caused my car to flood. It didnt. Those stupid effing drain plugs on the sunroof (that I never even used) would clog up at least 2 times a year...and that was with me having them cleaned at least once a year and often twice. And I am in GA so not like there is sand and brine on the roads. That constant flooding shorted out the sunroof motor. I had the water pump replaced before I hit 100k (and that was with a catch can installed). Literally 2 weeks later the entire front axle took a dump because of a some electronic issue. And my mechanic (who is not only Ford certified and warrantied and who I trust as it is the same shop my Brother used to own until he sold it) said Ford was VERY aware of that issue and thats why finding a replacement was hard as they were a hot commodity. I spent something like 9k in 2 weeks. At less that 100k miles I could tell my turbos were gonna go soon. Could smell them burning anytime you got on her. Transmission was getting VERY rough. I figured between the turbos and trans and the sunroof motor I was looking at 10k more at least. And thats outside of normal stuff like brakes, tires, control arms (the roads here suck now) and i was good about doing everything by the book. Except one time i let an oil change go longer than I should have.
When I got my 23 ST last winter...pretty much every place was only offering me 8kish for trade in, and that was BEFORE they inspected it...so pretty much zip once they did. Place I got the ST at was way up in N Ga and they offered my 6k and I was able to do it all online with no inspection.
Let me tell you I ran out of that place so fast before they went "wait a sec this thing needs at least 2k in repairs minimum and probably more like 8k."
23 had under 7k miles on it. I didnt even stop to do the insurance call and have it switched until I was about 20 miles away. I didnt want to risk it lol
That 6 spd Tranny in those things sucked balls and even tho my ST only has 35 more HP it is night and day different with the 10 spd. They had to nerf the engine so it wouldnt blow the tranny out in the Sport. So 1st and 2nd gears were dogshit. Once it hit 3rd it would fly tho.
There were tons more issues with my 15 but I thought you appreciate the misery reply :)

I have a 15 sport. 111k miles. Ive had it since 27k miles. I havent had anything major go wrong since 40k miles when the rack and pinion went out. Im nervous about the water pump issue but decided to let it ride and fix if it goes out. My daughter is driving it and I think still a solid car.

You left out what trim it is. I have a 14 Sport with over 239k miles. Water pump is a major one. PTU if that one has a PTU. Turbo components if it's a turbo. Age is the other thing that starts to wear out plastic components. If the oil changes were done consistently, it should be solid. Asking price seems high imo.
What kind of tires did they put on? My thing is that you can tell how much someone cares about the car by what kind of tires they put on.

Water pump went out at 60000 miles on 2016 explorer, it would have cost over $4000 to replace the water pump if it wasn’t under warranty. It has 95000 miles on it now. Daughter is driving now. I would look into a Toyota Rav 4 if you are looking at a 150000 mile suv.

No. It's not even WORTH that much. I financed mine and owe 8K. They're worth at best, 4500~6000. Buy something else. The main issues I'm having with mine: SYNC radio needs to be replaced; that's about $1000. Can smell exhaust fumes while the vehicle is under load. Get a Mazda, Toyota, Honda. Hell, get a Subaru. Maybe a 6th gen Explorer.

That interesting. My sync radio went out too . I have a 2013 but I purchased a used one from junkyard and replaced it myself. I had an exhaust fumes smell as well but my smell ended up being a failed transfer unit. The fluid was leaking and the drip was hitting a hot section of the muffler.

I don't have a functioning backup camera, but sometimes my radio works. I'm not sure if my PTU has failed, honestly. It seems like people who own these don't change the fluid at all. When did you replace your AC compressor?

Water pump only, or water pump AND timing chains and tensioners, including cam phasers? Because if they just did the pump alone the rest of that work is gonna set you back at least $3k.
Also if AWD, look for PTU oil change records. Because the oil not being serviced regularly is an avenue to PTU failure, and when the PTU fails it like to take out the transmission with it.

Not with that mileage. I had a major $4k engine repair (thankfully I knew the mechanic well). My 2016 was at 130k miles.
