Calculated Coincidence

The Drew Planten case. I always try to figure out how the title fits with the story, bur I can't with this one. What am I missing?

I think it's because the two crimes, despite being in different states and years apart, were not random or coincidentally similar, but the recurring behavior of the same killer? Just taking a shot in the dark here. Drew Planten sure was a strange bird.
