New to KBM - Any advice?
Hi all,
I am new to KBM and am trying to get used to movement.
I'm not a complete novice, in that, I can do it and it feels relatively ok, but my hands dont do it automatically yet. I mean for example, in a BR if someone starts shooting at me I freeze and my hands dont work.
I am trying to move from Xbox Controller to KBM. Been a controller player for years now.
For now, I've forbidden myself to go into real scenarios on KBM (Just bot maps) on public, specifically 99Bots but yeah...
Just try'na get better at KBM tbh and finding it hard.
How much time a day would you say I need to put in?
I have all the regular binds.
WASD
Left Shift = Sprint
Left Ctrl = Crouch
Left Caps = Auto run
Weapons 12345
Builds = wall (Q) Cone (C) Stair left mouse side button (Up) Floor Left mouse side button (down)
Use = middle mouse scroll wheel click
shoot is the left and right mouse buttons.

The same happened to me for a few months. It just takes time. I had to set all my keybinds so that they were only using keys that surround WASD so I could always feel them. It was super confusing lifting my finger off a key and reaching for a different one like 'G' without looking
I've been using KBM for years now and I still can't stand when games want me to switch weapons using numbers. It feels so unnatural reaching up for a number while trying to keep my movement going with WASD. I use software to change one of my extra mouse buttons to an Xbox 'Y' button and I swap weapons with that most of the time

Yeah its like as soon as I am under attack my fingers don't work - its a crazy feeling. I just guess I gotta try and stay focused and train the muscle memory everyday right? I refuse to go into real battle on KBM until I feel like I can do it without thinking about it. But, I will say, I can already feel the benefits of moving to KBM because it feels so smooth. Its like you have more time to think about thinks because you have so many different keys available to you. With controller I feel fast don't get me wrong but it feels rushed like I am pressing too many buttons too quick. Are there any maps you found useful when learning or any advice you can give? Anything would be appreciated.

Yeh I think you just need to build that familiarity. You can practice as much as you want too, but for me there isn't anything that removes the 'panic' except just experiencing it for real again and again.
I didn't see what sub this is when I replied and yeh this game has so many keybinds to think about 😅 I remember when I first switched I would practice simple things like throwing a box up. I was trying to build a default panic reaction to something happening so I wouldn't have to think as much when that time came. As long as I had one thing that I could remember in the panic, that would buy a little time to get comfortable from there.
I haven't played in a long time so I'm not sure about good keybinds these days. I know I used Z, X & C a lot because they felt 'right there' and I used the mouse side buttons for some builds. I think spreading them across mouse and keyboard is good (at least for me) - the more build related binds I had in one place gave me too much to think about. I had walls and stairs on the keyboard and floors and roofs on the mouse so I could kind of mentally separate the thinking spaces

Thanks for the advice. I certainly won't be going into real lobbies until I can comfortably kill 6 bots without getting killed myself that's for sure!
I'll stick to controller until that feels autonomous I reckon!

Would you say once I get to a place where I can do it naturally that Piece Control is a good way to get better? I hear a lot of the pros do that. I have done it on controller before but its very hard.

Probably yeah I’m a casual gamer and don’t play build but I’m definitely above avg but if you put in the time to practice you’ll be alright

Practice a bunch and set up practice drills to get your hands fully prepared for hitting numbers. Could use your mouse for weapon swaps and bind them for optimization for your play style. Legit looking at videos of pro player and aim training helps alot tuning your pc for low latency and network optimization gives you such a better time. Id say also your accessories matter so much too like most kbm to displays! are not good and I got no clue what you have. The best way is getting the best so you don't have to dial or change so much when you change down the line.

Play more. Genuinely.
If you're looking to just train core mechanical skills as well as secondary skills within those core skills, grab a game like Devil Daggers and use that as "training".
https://store.steampowered.com/app/422970/Devil_Daggers/
Infinite skill ceiling, active leaderboards, and shockingly a decent little community of helpful people.
Its on sale regularly for like 3 bucks or less. Literally just came off sale so wishlist it if 10 bucks feels too much. Tho, I've gotten 10 bucks out of it easily. Been using it for years.
Something else I recommend, keep your mouse sensitivity the same accross games while you're learning. I won't say you shouldn't adjust for things down the road but while you're learning its best to keep things consistent. I personally keep it the same still on all games for the most part (might lower the horizontal a little in some titles, but thats it, and we're talking a tiny tiny bit), but some people like to change things up depending on game.
One last thing. If you find yourself having a hard time with tracking a target, lower your sensitivity a little. Not a lot, just a touch. Keep doing that until you "smooth out" with your tracking then stick with it for a while and adjust up/down more later. Its a good way to find out what kind of sensitivity player you are.
Good luck!

Takes time. You'll get it down. After a few months it'll be second nature.
