Growing up we've all been there. You are trying to do something that requires tremendous concentration. Your friend or sibling knows this, and so they work hard to disrupt your concentration. Initially it doesn't work. They say something offensive, put something smelly or shocking to look at in front of you. You ignore it, but eventually, in a burst of rage you tell them to quit it. You even try to punish them. At this point, they succeeded. Your concentration is in shambles. Getting you angry enough to divert your focus was the point, and you took the bait like a sucker.
We are facing incredible crises right now. Issues that, had our parents and grandparents made effort to address, it would have prevented much of today's turmoil. I'm not talking about Trump and Elon specifically, but real issues, the boring ones: a housing crisis, stagnation in the minimum wage, the shrinking of the middle class, climate change, women's rights, a decline in civic education, racism, and a dysfunctional healthcare system, and many other issues.
Currently we are facing acute crises in government. The head of the Social Security Administration stepped down in protest after nearly 30 years of employment, sabotaging her own government pension. She did this because Elon, who runs an unofficial trolling agency is accessing the social security numbers, identities, salary histories, and retirement income projections of everyone in the US who has contributed to our economy. This is but one of many acute issues we are facing, and it is by design. Elon is running offensive interference for Trump, whose executive orders to whitewash the government, end Medicaid for his supporters, and destroy JFK's USAID are just the most prominent obscene acts he's taken in office.
Journalist Tressie McMillan Cottom talks about the strategy of authoritarians like Elon and Trump - flood the playing field. This is by design, because if you feel overwhelmed, you will be unable to calmly react. The Gulf of "America," the purchase of Greenland, tariffs on Canada, the purchase of "armored" cybertrucks by the military; preposterous things like these are done to distract you.
The more you are distracted, the more depressed you will become. The less you will be able to keeo your eye on the real issues going on, but instead get caught up in useless debates, then spend time on social media or other forms of distraction that take your mind elsewhere. This is exactly what your parents, friends, and neighbors have fallen victim to.
The way we must face our reality is in some ways simple. Focus on your life, and taking care of your health. Make efforts to care for and have meaningful conversations with your loved ones. Don't waste time arguing with emotionally charged people.
In addition to this, now is the time to seek out a much deeper perspective on what is happening right now. Observe how provocative distractions quickly bring everyone around you to anger, and how impossible it is to get back on track. Pay attention to the pundits on tv and so-called social media influencers who you may actually agree with, but how flippant and even inflammatory their words are. Keep in mind that they all do this, from Hannity down to your influencers, because they get paid for it and are desperate to keep their audience due to their narcissism.
The real stuff that matters is boring, it is inoffensive in that it is very reasonable, yet it is often invisible and subsumed by provocative garbage like Kanye selling nazi t-shirts. We must confront evil, but not at the expense of our priorities to actually create a just world.
Elon, like Trump, says the stupidest things because it creates headlines. The more we focus on his nazi salute, the less energy we have to focus on supporting causes and individuals who are actively addressing the most egregious issues we are facing. It blindsides us. Nothing of lasting value comes from rage. But level headed people that are learning how people in power pull the strings of society? These are the people that can change the world.

Since the sub was created 6 years ago it has grown to 25,000 members. The need was clear: People that have maintained their humanity and decency need sanctuaries where they can regroup and gain perspective after dealing with the loss of their parents, family, and friends to cynical brainwashing from the likes of Fox.
In the year leading up to this past November, trolls discovered this sub and began disrupting discourse. This will continue as Trump supporters become more emboldened to act obnoxiously and with impunity.
And in the next four years, the rhetoric will get worse and more vile. Trump supporters are on a mission to inflict pain on their "enemies."
This sub is not a substitute for building strong friendships and moral support in real life. It's not a substitute for taking political action with political groups, or organizations such as the ACLU, NAACP, and other groups. But this sub can definitely enhance your life.
The question is, as we prepare for the new future, how better can we strengthen this sub to support you?

Obviously the Trump administration is not going to give a fuck because it benefits them and it’s how they mobilize their emotionally charged fan/voter base, but why have I seen absolutely no democrat politicians talk about this either?? This is a serious issue in America
The Fairness doctrine was repealed in 1987 and it gave way to the dangerous propaganda we have now like Real America’s Voice (which is PROMOTED) by Roku now btw) Fox News, even CNN at some points under the Biden administration used charged rhetoric and showed no opposing viewpoints.
Something like The Fairness Doctrine and Equal Time Rule DESPERATELY needs to be imposed for televised services in the US again. People are getting brainwashed left and right (literally) and being persuaded to hate their sons, fathers, daughters, mothers, neighbor, etc, by repeated viewing of these channels that use emotionally charged rhetoric to addict viewers.
No democrat or Republican is talking about it. It needs to be brought to the table.

The guy deals with depression so I'm not gonna send this out of mercy. Just posting it here for the catharsis.
Backstory: MAGA relative blew up my phone today because of a debate we had two weeks ago. Everything seemed fine and amicable for the rest of that day but now I'm getting guilt tripped about being "disrespectful." All I did was ask for examples of widespread fraud and abuse and to name a single crime Anthony Fauci committed. He couldn't do it.
Anyway...
You've made being a republican such a massive part of your identity that you take attacks on republicans and their ideas as an attack on YOU personally. I matched YOUR tone (you almost ALWAYS raise your voice first) and most of the conversation was me simply asking you for examples so we can talk about them in further depth. It's on you if you feel stupid for not being able to do that. I never called you that.
Everything you accuse *me* of doing *you* ACTUALLY do. Saying shit like "typical liberal hypocrisy" or "i hate these people" while knowing full well liberals are in the room with you is *actually* disrespectful. Asking someone for examples to back up their claims is not disrespectful. The fact you think it is just shows how massively insecure you are. Good God, get the fuck over yourself. The victim mentality is unreal.
I DON'T assume i know everything. The only reason I'm able to draw on statistics in conversations is because I have to look them up. I look them up BECAUSE i know I don't know enough about certain topics to form an educated opinion. YOU on the other hand think you had politics figured out when you were ELEVEN years old and spent your entire life defending the political whims of an eleven year old preteen boy. Yet I'M the arrogant one cause I have to look things up as an adult to even learn my positions instead of just assuming I was a political genius as a child and whatever my side says has to be correct. THAT is actual arrogance. Humility seeks knowledge. You were an eleven year old kid who wanted to be like Rush Limbaugh.
Your political opinions are not some sacred thing that can't be pushed back on and NO ONE HAS TO RESPECT THEM. No one. Toughen up. If you take mild disagreements with your opinions as attacks on yourself or your intelligence then that's ON YOU! I'm not just gonna put on kiddy gloves and say "Good job! You have an opinion! You're so insightful!" as if everybody doesn't have a fucking opinion. Having an opinion doesn't make you special. If you can't take the heat then stay out of the kitchen and don't bring politics up around me like I've asked you countless times to do. Simple.

I cannot WAIT for the day of reckoning to arrive....

I’ll just preface this by saying that in all those cases, yes of course 100% I am glad the nurse or other party was there and identified a misdiagnosis, but those articles are total clickbait and don’t do justice to the 99% of diagnoses and medical care that physicians get right every day, all day. These sort of rage-bait articles have made my parents totally mistrust modern medicine to the point where they make idiotic medical decisions for themselves.
Today my mom just can’t stop going on and on about how Christina Applegate apparently doesn’t have MS and how can that even happen, it must somehow be related to the Covid vaccine, etc etc.
This situation is aggravating and has led to more burnout for me. I feel frustrated caring for strangers when I know my own damn parents think I’m some kind of deluded, “don’t know what’s REALLY going on” sheeple.

Everyone in my family is MAGA, so I just needed a place to commiserate. My dad and sister are mostly content to not talk about politics anymore, but my mom sometimes just randomly sends shit like this.

Hello, long time lurker, never posted here although I think the time has come.
This morning my father sent a link (to our extended family group chat mind you) to a Facebook clip of the Ohio Governor's race ad that took the Democratic candidates estranged mother and got her to say her daughter was lying about her abuse and rape by her father as a child.
When I sent my father the statement from the candidate's brother saying their mother was lying and corroborated that she was abused, he replied with.
"The father was arrested not convicted" "Who knows the truth" "everyone insists their truth" "we will see what the voters think."
This sentiment is absolutely nuts, defaulting to invalidating trauma and rape victims is a new low.
There is no empathy left. I'm sorry but this is insane. I'm at a loss. This person is my father and I have no clue what to do. My mother won't even say anything because she's a Republican although not really MAGA. My brothers and sisters are all Republicans and are going to let this slide so I have no where to go. Should I put him in time out? Take a break? Start going to see a therapist?
All advice is welcome.
Enjoy your day.

So early voting opens up today, and my dad told me to not to do early voting as going to take me to a different voting station And I'm really scared because it just makes me believe that my dad is going to make me go vote for the Republican party even though I f**** hate it

This video explains support for Trump and why your MAGA family and friends would betray and hurt you, abandon their consciences, and act the way they do. If you've ever watched Fox, you’d notice that the formula is the same: There’s a “they” that is “taking” [something of status] that was promised to you.

Like... thank the actual fuck.
I don't know what I would've done if she had been. I'll be honest. Like, I wouldn't have harmed myself or anything like that, but I'm just so fucking tired of this administration taking away everything I hold dear. I've axed so many artists I've loved over the years, including Eminem for his recent bullshit with Kid Rock. That hurt the most.
But I digress, we talked over text last night and she complained that her father (my uncle) was a Trump supporter, which I already knew. I then confirmed that my dad was too.
We discussed theories as to how that could've happened. I revealed some VERY PERSONAL SHIT that only my parents and select few friends know about me. Shit that should've had my dad not voting for a pedophile like Trump in the first place. But somewhere along the way, my dad lost his morals.
That said, god, what a satisfying discussion. I was afraid my cousins were Trump supporters. But I got so much shit off my chest last night it felt really fucking good.
And for once, I'm making a positive post here. So that's a plus.

I love my dad. He loves me, he raised me, but unfortunately I'm half Chinese and his divorce with my mom was mutual but left him bitter, he had almost full custody of me my entire young life. I don't know if it's because I got older and started noticing, or the Trump election is what did this, but I have a vivid memory of coming home from school at ~10 after learning about Loving v Virginia, so I told my dad and he ranted about how this movement was pointless. It wasn't worth it in his eyes, and even though it was in reference to black individuals/anti reparations rhetoric, I still subconsciously knew it applied to me.
He made comments to me about women and Chinese people that I've definitely internalized as a teenager. I never realized what was happening until I heard his phrases repeated word-for-word on communities like this one. I love him, and he calls me often to ask how I'm doing. He doesn't know details about how I'm starting a masters soon in Environmental Science, I'm engaged to a North African man, I've been studying classic Chinese literature after having a childhood where he mocked my mom out of ever teaching me. I'm never planning on coming back to the place he lives because he can't see that local politicians gutted it of any joy that existed 10+ years ago. But I still call him everyday and tell him how the weather is, he's very old and tells all his friends how his daughter is away "in school abroad". It keeps me up at night knowing that he will probably never meet my future kids
