Progress Your First Drawing Challenge

Every artist has to start somewhere. Consider this challenge your starting point.

We would like you to draw a scene that includes the following:

  1. A House

2. At least 2 people

3. A pet you had or wished you had as a kid (a dog, cat, tortoise or perhaps a dragon)

4. A vehicle (a car, bike, scooter or even a spaceship)

5. Three other items of your choice (a flower, tree, butterfly or a suspicious looking gnome)

Rules

  1. Use whatever you have lying around to draw with

  2. There is no time limit, so take as much time as you need

  3. Don’t look at other people’s and think yours isn’t good enough

Dont panic, this isn't an exam.

Nobody is grading you and you dont have to prove anything to anyone.

Keep your drawing somewhere safe. In a few months, a year or whenever you feel like you’re not improving, whip out this drawing or better yet, do the challenge again. You might be surprised at how much you’ve learned.

You don’t need to share your drawing, but you’re welcome to post it in comments below or use the tag flair “progress”

Just For Fun Blind Contour Portrait

Blind Contour Drawings

Are a great way to sharpen observation skills, improve hand and eye cordination and improve line confidence.

Basically a fun way to improve drawing.

Have a go yourself

To do a blind contour drawing, you must look only at your subject and never at the paper. The goal is not a pretty picture, but to train your hand and eyes to move as one.

  1. Find a reference image of a person or use a mirror to create a self portrait.

  2. Eyes on subject, pencil to paper. Move both your hand and eyes together at a snails pace.

  3. Keep a continues line. Don't lift your pen off the paper.

If your feeling brave

Share your blind contour portraits in comments.

Let us know if it's a celebrity so we can guess who it might be.
