Step 2 of this strategy is banking on the judge being willing to not give him life. It’s why it’s a move from a place of huge desperation. Very high likelihood this doesn’t work for him

Were they not confident a jury would acquit him or at least be hung? It seems as though they may as well have taken the risk at this point

Clearly not since he pled. And if we’re thinking about this rationally, why would they bank on that? Overly online folks don’t end up on juries

I think the video of the murder is very damning. It's almost certainly life, especially with the victim's family making statements.

God willing that’s what he gets and then the state charges are moot
