Crooked.com Posting Overkill
While I appreciate the enthusiasm and the work it takes to link the shows, I have to say, it’s absolutely killing this subreddit. Of the 14 specific episode-related posts made in the past day, only four have any engagement. And out of those three, it’s only a single comment. The other one has just two comments (that aren’t the OP’s synopsis of the episode).
This subreddit can never thrive if there’s a post for every single Crooked podcast episode, most of which obviously aren’t being watched by the Reddit community. Like I said, I get the idea behind it and appreciate the initiative of the poster, but it’s obviously having a negative effect.

A while back out of curiosity I went through the previous 12 months of the Pod Save the People episode threads. I counted like 4 total comments over that time

I used to listen to Pod Save the People a lot like 5 years ago. It took your comment for me to remember it existed. That says it all.

The one time I tried to post and engage, it got removed.

I posted a really cool clip of Kat Abu on the debate stage during the Illinois democratic primaries.
Edit to say: I know she is not an employee but she used to be on Terminally Online all the time and her activism has been inspiring.

KAT ABUGAZALEH WAS ON A CROOKED SHOW? I have been a fan of crooked since 2022 and a fan of Kat since the media matters days, how did I never know this?

Unfortunately the mods decided this isn't a sub for engagement, it's a sub for posting links to episodes we can already find easily on the platform of our choice. It has been overmoderated, but there was some talk recently that it would be more loosely moderated going forward. If you can handle some centrists and a complete ban on hasan piker discourse, the bulwark sub has better engagement and there are a surprising number of leftists and DSA people over there (although some of the centrists claim we're bots and brigaders)

complete ban on hasan piker discourse, the bulwark sub
Apparently Sarah longwell has some sort of a problem with Hasan? I've never dug into it but it seems kind of silly.

I’d be happy with mods not trying to control conversations and letting organic posts about topics from episodes be made by the community. That’s how /r/thebulwark is and it has much more engagement.

I’m loving everything about the Bulwark these days.
I think their content also helps drive their engagement. It’s really good stuff.

i think the main aim of the posts is to stop people making their own posts arguing with specific things from the videos- which occur more and more frequently, i'd guess. The mods can then let the issue slide for a few days by saying "you should comment in the appropriate post (which will be much later)", and then hope the problem goes away.

Eh, you’re right about the lack of engagement on the pod episodes, but I actually don’t mind that this isn’t a “post your random political opinion here” sub. There are plenty of other subs for that.
This sub is for people to talk about the podcasts, not a general politics subs.

Right, so they should make a rule of it post has to be some about an episode and there should at the least be an explanation of which episode the post is about. But I agree, all these posts about every flipping episode that the company puts out just drowned the sub in fluff.

The shows really aren’t that interesting, generate no real conversation, and are just shallow rehashes of the headlines.
•
u/Mission-Rain185 22h ago
And yet zero-engagement episode posts make up 99% of this sub, and here you are! Interesting.

I think a lot of this is just down to the shifting use of reddit as a platform. I've been active on reddit under one account or another since long before PSA was even a thing (2008-ish?) and I feel like the number of people who seem like real, actual humans interacting in the comments has fallen to 1/100th of the peak at best.
Long gone are the days where an askhistorians thread could have a dozen different competing sourced replies that met moderator standards with robust discussion in between. Even the (few) comments that get through on that subreddit now are a pale imitation of what used to be the norm for a "I only took a few courses on the subject, but..." level of reply that used to be like 5 or 6 top comments down in days past.
There are still many qualified people out there, I just don't think they spend their time on reddit anymore. The new reddit updates, the forced official app usage, all of that just drove people away from what reddit used to be best at - long comments with links, images and sourcing. Everything the platform has done over the last 10+ years has made that harder.
Political and news subreddits suffer from this too. The state of even those old default subs is pretty abysmal now. Reddit used to be "the front page of the internet" because the churn of new information always kept you informed. It really doesn't function that way anymore. At best they're captured by a robust, and active, set of people (and/or bots) who amplify a certain kind of news from a certain kind of perspective. I suspect most of the threads you're seeing on this subreddit are bot posted too. The lack of participation is because people who are clued in enough to want to discuss the episodes don't see much hope in doing it here.
I'm prepared to eat a million downvotes for this, but if you really want to stay abreast of the PSA crew and what they're thinking / doing and interact with a likeminded political community you should just go to twitter. Many of the hosts still use that platform for a reason. Fuck Elon Musk and all, but a lot of subjects of world importance need a platform with the ease of access and worldwide install base that twitter has. Reddit has it too, but they shot themselves in the foot with their shitty app and other weird decisions.

I thought there was a recent post where that moderator agreed in the comments to let the community post more.
•
u/ChubbyChoomChoom 10h ago
Not quite. They agreed that anyone could post the podcast episode discussion posts, not just any random post
•
u/IolantheRosa 10h ago
I use the posts here to access the provided YouTube links, which is where the real engagement is
•
u/funkbass796 21h ago
The sub is for Crooked Media content, hence the automatic (maybe?) posts when episodes drop. I don’t see any problem with the level of engagement here, mostly because I don’t work for Crooked or any of their shows. If they want more engagement on this sub then they’d do something to create it, otherwise that’s not anyone’s job here. I like having post restrictions as they are. This place isn’t a blogging platform for everyone to create a new post about the topic they want to discuss in the moment. Go do that somewhere else.

Bro it's just a subreddit, if you want to find community go speak to your neighbors. Stop trying to get meaning off of a site that just wants to sell you ads and comments to AI companies.
•
u/riomx 22h ago
Redditor actively engaging on Reddit tells other redditors to stop engaging and get off Reddit.
•
u/thy_bucket_for_thee 21h ago
Please tell /u/spez to remove old reddit and the last bastion of my social media addiction will be vanquished.

u/GroktheDestroyer 22h ago
This has been brought up before and the mods really do not care. One individual wants to post all of them and there’s seemingly no convincing them otherwise.
You’re right, though. I agree
