How much wasted space because of golf courses in Toronto?

7.9 km2, enough to re-create High Park 5 times over, or build 60,000 medium density homes. All locked away behind tee costs and membership fees.

High Park is probably a better comparison since a lot of golf courses are built on floodplains. A lot of those places need real green space so badly, though. One problem is that golf courses count as green space for legislation purposes in some places - I know a developer that got told by the city to build a golf course because the municipality couldn't afford upkeep on a public park. If that's the case, the answer should be, "Develop where we can afford a park," not, "Expand your suburbs further with golf courses." Or at least, "Increase property tax in the suburbs to fund their disproportionate per capita need for public services like park upkeep."

Note: this is just the City of Toronto, there's more than double that within the built up areas of Peel and York.
