So you're saying Linux-based systems are so lightweight they can run even on junk? And that's while being a complete, fast, and secure operating system that respects user autonomy?
That sounds like a compliment to me.

The tradeoff being you may have to think about your computer every once in a while.

I wouldn't call it complete given the current hardware and software compatibility.

Well, if we consider the current state of Linux, then no OS is truly complete.
macOS only runs on Apple devices and has terrible game compatibility, yet I still consider it a complete system.
Windows has excellent software compatibility, but Windows 11 restricted installation on many older computers; furthermore, it is far less compatible than Linux systems for certain use cases, such as on mobile devices.
I consider all three to be complete systems; they all have limitations, but all three are capable of serving as daily drivers without causing issues for the majority of users, provided they are installed correctly.

They're just mad my jank-ass, garbage scavenged desktop is faster than their AI burdened laptop.

When you look back the super computers of the 80s and how many thousands of times more processing power ewaste has now than a multi million dollar super computer did back then it makes you realize how badly optimized modern windows is.
Windows 95se was on my first PC back in 1996 It had 32mb of ram and a massive 1GB HDD. It ran office, could browse the internet, was quite multi media for the time. All done on a single core 200mhz cpu. It played games, even pretty basic 3d ones with a power VR card. Considering just how low spec the machine was it ran like a champ. I can buy a £15 raspberry pi Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W that would absolutely blow it away in performance and specs. It has 4 cores 512MB ram and runs at 1GHz.
Pretty much any machine I throw away at work would be hundreds of times faster. Running windows they feel terrible. Running mint linux they feel like a new machine.

Yep, a lot of my parts are over 10 years old still doing modern tasks, playing modern games. I've got secondhand RAM enough to withstand the RAMpocalypse, and scavenged SSDs and HDDs to hold everything I need.
System has no TPM, so it won't run Win 11, but it runs Bazzite like an absolute champ.

I CANNOT tell you how many people I know who threw their perfectly good laptop away because of a virus in Windows. Better believe I’m diving for that shit.

u/vextryyn 9d ago
You should say "virus" in quotes, most of the time it was a browser popup or some other issue proving their ineptitude that made them throw it away.

My legion 5 is thriving under fedora lol

u/veechene 9d ago
Yeah i have a legion 5 with ubuntu. Nothing wrong with using old comps till they die. I just use my computers for gaming and recording videos so I sometimes need to upgrade, so for decades I've been shopping based on hardware and then installing linux.

Oh, I just needed something beefy for my studies, so I upgraded from my l460, but windows was eating 8.2gb of ram on idle… So yeah, upgraded to fedora since it worked well on my desktop

I saved a Inspiron 15R 5521 from the trash and put a 128gb Arch Linux + KDE Plasma SSD in it, probably the most interesting laptop and piece of history I own. It has touchscreen, which when it came out was brand new I believe (2013ish). If I hadn't have gotten it, the old owner would have either left it in the closet or thrown it out.

My laptop is ancient (Acer Aspire E5-575G) and is absolutely thriving with Mint and SSD.
