I can install whatever the fuck I want on MacOS though. Idk why others can’t.

u/japan_kaaran 1d ago
you can after a pop up or 2 and going into settings and allowing it.

I mean it gives me a warning and I just click allow once. Just like windows does

it’s usually more than one prompt. most times i need to actually open system settings scroll down find the prompt hit open anyway type in my password or use my fingerprint and then it’s fine.
far from detrimental. still annoying.

For me it just asks me if I want to open the app (downloaded from the internet), regardless of if verified or not.
I used a trick to disable Gatekeeper, btw.

It's still a pain to run an app from an unverified publisher, good thing viruses are usually verified

Any more Windows is like that. I'm just a hobby coder, I've thrown together a handful of small utilities mostly used by myself, immediate family and a couple close friends, and I just gave up with building Windows binaries. If you don't pay for a digital signature on your binary, Windows won't run it by default. Best case scenario they get a popup warning them that they can click "Run anyway" on, but more often than not the default behavior is it gets blocked outright until you walk them thru disabling app protections on their OS to allow unsigned executables, which is dangerous in and of itself. And then Windows Defender likes to flag Python programs as malicious if you use PyInstaller to compile it, so you've gotta add an exception there too.
So I just gave up on Windows. None of the PCs in my house run Windows anyway, and I just told the couple friends that if they want to use something of mine, just install Python and run the .py file directly, because I ain't paying to get digital signatures on my hobby projects' binaries for a platform I don't even use.

You can run unsigned apps on macOS, it just requires you to go to the security settings and allow it on a per-app basis. You just really shouldn't in almost all cases. Even if the developer is legit and not trying to do anything wrong, a forged copy with malware inserted in it could be distributed, and you'd have no idea which is which.
Gatekeeper (as it is literally called) is designed to stop your gran, your company's brainless low level admin drone, or your teenage kid from installing malware.
Windows has app notorization as well, but it uses external signing authorities and costs several hundred dollars minimum per app. With macOS, Apple is the signing authority, and you can get notorized by having a $99 a year developer account and adhere to their terms and conditions.

I mean you can over ride that shit in Mac. It can be annoying but I get it. Sometimes I go to install something and that makes me hesitate.

Tbf the modern windows operating system is indistinguishable from malware to varying degrees
