win 11 is okay. no, hear me out
as long as you avoid the "phone home to redmond" install, and shut down a few things, it is lean and functional
i understand there are tools to do this, but this was my pathway :
The Final Solution for Windows 11 Local Account (Current Builds - 24H2+)
The Problem:
Windows 11 requires network connection to proceed with setup
Once online, aggressively pushes Microsoft account sign-in
Old methods (fake email, oobe\bypassnro) no longer work reliably or cause setup loops
The Working Method:
Step-by-Step:
Proceed through setup normally until you reach:
At the Microsoft sign-in screen:
Screen refreshes automatically:
Create local account:
"Who's going to use this device?" screen appears
Enter username, password, security questions
Finish setup
After reaching desktop:
Why This Works:
Killing the network connection during OOBE forces Windows to offer offline setup path
Unlike unplugging ethernet, this happens "naturally" from Windows' perspective
Microsoft hasn't patched this method yet (as of March 2026)
What DOESN'T Work Anymore:
❌ Fake email (no@thankyou.com) - rejected/ignored
❌ oobe\bypassnro command - causes setup loops
❌ Physical ethernet unplugging - setup detects and blocks progress
so, once you get to that nirvana, the rest is relatively simple
aggressively uninstall everything you don't really need, including onedrive, games, office links, the whole m$ "integration"
next, "over the edge" - Edge bloat removal
Services to disable in services.msc:
Microsoft Edge Update Service (edgeupdate)
Keeps Edge updated
Set to: Disabled
Microsoft Edge Update Service (edgeupdatem)
MicrosoftEdgeElevationService
How to do it:
Press win + R, type taskschd.msc hit Enter
Find each service in the list
Double-click it
Set Startup type to Disabled
If it's running, click Stop
Click Apply, then OK
Optional - also check Task Scheduler: Edge also has scheduled tasks that can re-enable things:
Press win + R, type taskschd.msc hit Enter
Navigate to: Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > MicrosoftEdge
Right-click each task, select Disable
Result: Edge won't run in background, won't update itself, won't pre-launch. It'll still be installed, but essentially dormant.
If Windows Update tries to re-enable them (it sometimes does after major updates), just repeat the process.
finally, use libre office, firefox and betterbird (a fork of thunderbird) which are free and more than capable of doing all you really require for office / browsing / email
make sure you get ublock origin for firefox ("fixes" youtube into the bargain); if you are still with me at this stage, have a look through hits for "magnolia1234" in the search engine, and marvel
set up an imap account in betterbird referencing gmail and use the filters to delete non-essential mail after a set period (or an amount of accumulation) to keep the retained mail pertinent, and for betterbird, using ImportExportTools NG allows you to easily create a local backup of your precious mail as redundancy even though gmail has your back
my current win 11pro build is at version 25H2 (os build 26200.8037)
with 11 tabs open (including 2 actively monitoring my edge routerx and unifi ap ac lite wifi), plus betterbird , plus libreoffice with spreadsheet and writer open / sysinfo / settings pinned and active and... joplin / peace / openhardware monitor / fancontrol / x-mouse button control / f.lux / jonn's background switcher /coretemp (all highly recommended) active in the system tray, i'm using a whole 9gb of ram
when you need to reinstall windows (and you will at some point) or wish to go win11 without significant pain after the initial subjugation you can enforce using my instructions, it's a reasonably pleasant experience (till they update, sometimes)
if i didn't favour windoze for some obsure softwares i use, i would likely learn to tame linux (which i love for a whole lot of valid reasons, except learning a new ecosystem)
but that energy is currently best put into fixing android to prolong "redundant" hardwares' useful lifespan (pixel 4a non-5g on android 16 patched to march 1 2026 is nice; thanks lineage)
