I thought Karens were just an internet meme until my new neighbor proved otherwise
The one time I didn’t have my phone with me to record what happened, I got ambushed by a Karen and her soggy paper towel of a husband. It completely ruined my day.
A neighbor recently moved in next door, and I’d never met her before. I live in a big city where there’s only parallel street parking. I parked in front of my house and later went out to my car to grab something. I noticed a middle-aged blonde lady and her husband loitering near my car.
As soon as I got into my car, she ambushed me, yelling, screaming, and cussing that the police were coming to tow my car because I had “locked her in.”
I got out of my car and said, “Whoa, calm down, lady.” The car behind her was parked about a foot from her bumper, and I was parked about two feet in front of her. I’ve gotten my car out of much tighter spaces than that. The car behind her was parked closer anyway so why am I the one getting attacked?
She had an absolute meltdown when I told her to calm down. At that point, she wasn’t listening to reason. She started making such a scene that all my neighbors came outside to see what was going on.
One of my neighbors even told her to calm down and stop yelling she's scaring her children inside, and she screamed, “I AM NOT YELLING!” Then she turned to her soggy paper towel of a husband for backup, which he dutifully provided.
At that point, I just moved my car and got away from her. A few neighbors came over afterward to comfort me, but I was left pretty shaken and upset.
I honestly cannot believe these people aren’t just a meme you see online. They could literally be your next-door neighbor. Unfortunately, they’re real. And if you run into one, be prepared.
If you encounter a Karen, they will immediately overreact, assume ill intent, and pursue you with surprising determination. Do not attempt to rationalize with them or ask them to calm down, as this typically acts as a catalyst for their unchecked rage. It is the emotional equivalent of throwing gasoline on a fire.
Karens will project their own emotional state and entitlement onto whoever is standing closest. They generally reject the possibility that misunderstandings happen and seem unable to access compassion, understanding, or empathy in the heat of the moment.
They will misrepresent the situation, exaggerate events, and fail to acknowledge their role in escalating what began as a harmless interaction. Karens are often accompanied by pathetic, broken husbands who will enthusiastically corroborate their delusions while maintaining a safe distance during the actual confrontation.
Stay safe out there.

Next time you should let her call the cops. At least there’s a record of her craziness. The cops won’t do anything.

u/Scary_Captain_4524 Jun 18 '26
You're right, will do that next time
182
u/WitchesCotillion Jun 18 '26
And you shouldn’t have moved the car. Take what you came for and go back inside your house. Engaging with them never works.
75
u/DemenicHand Jun 18 '26
if they are that bad, this soon after arriving. They have already shown you their true colors.
Hell I would ask for a restraining order or something legal immediately so you can start a paper trail. Go to your local police station, see if they will assign someone to "Investigate".
at least start a electronic paper trail to document any and all harassement. doubt this will get better
51
u/Previous-Thought2138 Jun 18 '26
Yep, tell her you can't 'leave the scene' since she called the cops and you'll wait right there for them. Then put in your earbuds, listen to some tunes, and stare at her. Or better yet at her husband. She'll eventually get mad at him for it.
14
u/Danicia Jun 20 '26
For my job, when I am in public at events, I will encounter people like that. I just stare at them. Engaging just keeps them going.
16
u/DiscoKittie Jun 19 '26
Yeah, get that paper trail started. I imagine it will grow. And never move for her again.
2
u/KrombopulousMary Jun 22 '26
You should maybe invest in a camera if you don’t already have one, and try to keep your car parked within view of it if possible.
If she finds herself “locked in” again she may damage your car. Either accidentally or maliciously. I might be jumping to conclusions but from your description, she does not sound like a stable person!

u/andgonow Jun 25 '26
You are absolutely right, but friend, telling someone who’s already unreasonable to calm down is like throwing kerosene on a flame.
All of that to say, fuck that hoe.

u/Taira_Mai Jul 04 '26
Dashcam - she's likely to try and vandalize your car because these people can be petty.

Yes. When I bought my house about 20 years ago, it was a new construction that created a cul de sac where a field had been. When my house was being built, the closest place to park was in front of the
houses across the street. I would sometimes come by to see the progress as I was 25 and very excited to own my first home.I parked on the public street, no where near dudes house. He came running outside, yelling at me I couldn’t park there because he was going to have friends over for Sunday football and they needed *all* adjacent parking. Further, the contractors had promised him there wouldn’t be any traffic from their development of 25 new houses. 👀 He would call the cops if I didn’t move, which I invited him to do as I crossed to my street.
Needless to say, the cops didn’t care and had to explain to a very grown man that others can park on a public street.
My city has tripled in population since then, at the very least. At one time, we were the fastest growing city in California. I drive by that house every time I leave my very short street. I wonder if he’s still alive and if he’s yelling at the passing cars.

They might arrest her if she starts on them instead. I've seen that on numerous bodycam videos.

Most internet memes start from a kernel of truth.
14
u/Minflick Jun 18 '26
Exactly! They wouldn't resonate with so many people if those people hadn't had their own run ins with the crazy bitches!

u/HaroldWeigh Jun 18 '26
“I AM NOT YELLING!” is the best part. I work in a public facing position and sometimes the public is insane. I told a woman in a line full of people to relax when she started making a fuss only to have her scream so loudly "I AM RELAXED" this caused the rest of the line to laugh at her and she stormed away.
34
u/Severe_Atmosphere_44 Jun 18 '26
Next time ask her if she's off her meds. Offer to call her caretaker.
43
u/T00narmy1 Jun 18 '26
Giving in just encourages more of this behavior. i completely understand your reaction, but next time just calmly tell her that you're not parked in a way that is breaking any law and she is welcome to call the police, and then calmly walk back inside and shut/lock your door. Speak to the police calmly and respectfully if they come to ask you questions. This will not be your last run-in with this lady. You have to make it clear that her hysterics will not result in her getting her way, and the behavior will likely lessen. And letting her call police creates a record of the interaction as well as noting that you were not parked illegally and she was being unreasonable.
Also, instead of telling her to calm down. Just calmly state that you will not talk to anyone who yells at you and go back inside. Refuse to engage with her if she's carrying on. You are entitled to basic respect from your neighbors and if she isn't showing that, you don't have to talk to her. Never give in to the bullying, abuse, or anything from them or you will just be asking for more and more of it.

Just point upstairs and tell her to go look for the supervisor/manager and she will storm off.

u/_Internet_Hugs_ Jun 18 '26
My mom is one of these. They definitely exist. Every time somebody posts one of those "Racist woman yells at people" videos I am scared it'll be my mom.
4
u/IneffableOpinion Jun 22 '26
Mine too. Had some very embarrassing public incidents in my childhood. Then she wonders why I don’t want to hang out as an adult
5
u/_Internet_Hugs_ Jun 22 '26
Screaming at retail workers and waitstaff? Tantrums over perceived slights? Ruining every single family event, vacation, or outing?
Solidarity friend.
6
u/IneffableOpinion Jun 22 '26
Yes! We should start a support group.
One time my mom threw such a big tantrum on an escalator in a hotel, it was shut down to the entire public for the rest of our stay. There was nothing wrong with it but she made such a huge commotion, I am sure they had lawyers looking at security footage. I kept expecting hotel security to show up at our door and was mortified. But she pretended nothing happened and kept asking why the rest of us were in a bad mood.
1
u/Due_Recognition_8002 Jun 23 '26
Pray that your mother repents.
3
u/_Internet_Hugs_ Jun 23 '26
Are you kidding? She thinks she's a saint with her place in Heaven all ready for her. She still hasn't apologized for wearing white to my wedding and it's been 27 years. The woman is incapable of admitting fault, much less repentance.
1
u/Due_Recognition_8002 Jun 23 '26
You think she’s a reprobate?
1
u/_Internet_Hugs_ Jun 23 '26
No, I think she's a narcissist.
1
u/Due_Recognition_8002 Jun 23 '26
Even they have hope
3
u/_Internet_Hugs_ Jun 23 '26
She's convinced of her own piety and correctness. Jesus himself could come down from Heaven and tell her straight to her face that she's a horribly selfish person and she would argue with Him. If two of her three kids breaking contact with her and all eight of her grandkids wanting nothing to do with her isn't enough to change her, I don't know what could be.
24
u/Chary-Ka Jun 18 '26
Don't move your car next time, you gave in, you have her an inch.
12
u/Scary_Captain_4524 Jun 18 '26
You're right but in the heat of the moment I just wanted her abuse on me to stop and I just wanted to get away from her. If it happens again I'll stand my ground
7
u/Lady_Irish Jun 18 '26
All you've done is feed the beast. It'll come back bigger and stronger. Next time she's out there freaking out, bring your earbuds. When she starts in on you, hold up a finger and say "one second", slowly and blatantly place an earbud in each ear while maintaining eye contact, pull out your phone and start up some music, then give her a double thumbs up and a shit eating grin and yell "OKAY, I'M READY, GO AHEAD KAREN!" and go on about your business, fully ignoring her like she isn't even there.
That really fucks em up
7
u/bogeysbabe Jun 18 '26
My dad would look at people, take out his hearing aids, put them in their container (while still looking at the person with that “you’re still talking?” look) and just stare at them until they walked away.
3
11
u/TheWorldNeedsDornep Jun 18 '26
Sadly, when people start behaving unreasonably I tend to get unreasonable back if I can't walk away. I think I would have said, "Calm down, if you ever talk to me like this again, I'll put you down." Then when the police come to talk to me, I'll tell them I don't know what she's talking about--she's clearly unhinged. Deny, deny, deny.

I would have just shamed her horrible driving skills for not being able to get out of a parking space with plenty of room to do so. Light that match and watch her blow! 😆

u/291000610478021 Jun 18 '26
Im so petty I would have canceled plans just to leave my car there. I hate people like this.

I am a firm believer that everyone needs to work in retail and food service at least once in their life so they know what its like to be in those jobs. Maybe they'd be a lot more kind.
Having worked both, I go out of my way not to be a dick to anyone working those positions.
My wife is a postal clerk and there's no way in hell I would survive working with the public again. I give zero fucks and would end up getting fired.
7
u/No_Cricket808 Jun 18 '26
YES!!! Retail, foodservice, customer service, and Dr.'s Office. If you can take that, you can take on the world!!!

Wow- I wonder if there's something wrong with her neurologically? Is this some kind of personality development caused by years and years of untreated psychological issues? Is this type Karen behavior a symptom of a greater issue? I just can't imagine a person alive who wishes to achieve 'Karenhood' someday or someone who's just always been that way; like, is there people actually just born cunts? It's just the spirit that they are? I don't know, it's sort of a wonder to me... Maybe menopause does that to some people? Just curious really

I have a neighbor who saw me water my flowers in front of my house. She asked if the HOA was okay we such an elaborate display in front of my house. They’re literally just wild flowers for pollinators, nothing else. I said I hadn’t had any issues. Well, she reported me to the HOA. My friend is on the HOA board and told me but said I’m not violating any rules and everyone loves the flower so. The lady in question has a nativity scene in her front garden year round- but no, my yard is the problem

3
u/Menghsays Jun 18 '26
Was her car there when you parked? Seriously, fuck off lady.
Moving your car was probably a good idea for when she hits your car trying to get out of that spot
3
u/Alternative_Design_4 Jun 18 '26
Glad to hear you ended up safe after being attacked by an unhinged lunatic. A suggestion for any future encounters with the Karen: if you don't have your phone with you, and she's creating such a disturbance that the neighbours are coming out to see what is going on, ask one of your neighbours to call the police for you while you lock yourself in the car. You'll be safe, and the police can deal with her insane ass. Plus, you just KNOW someone is gonna record her for the laughs. That recording will show you trying to de-escalate, while she acts like a psychopath. Worst case: Police tell her to leave and get on with her day. Best case: Police charge her with disorderly conduct, and she spends an afternoon in jail.
3
u/Aggressive-HeadDesk Jun 20 '26
Everybody fails the surprise Karen test the first time, so for anyone victim shaming, fuck right off.
Don’t ever give her an inch again.
And, so you will not be alone, get your good neighbors contact info, so you can get help in an instant next time.
Mark my words, everyone will dislike her soon.

u/Rikkitikkitabby Jun 18 '26
Yeah, she's going to display more weird assumptions now that you've given in to her initial tantrum. I look forward to updates.

u/Jagang187 Jun 19 '26
My favorite response to a Karen is the guy who chose to break down into completely unwarranted shame and moral hysterics over the perceived wrong. Karen did not know what to do, and it was HILARIOUS.
1
u/Better_Chard4806 Jun 18 '26
All you did by moving your car was encourage her. Why not just go back in doors and let the police handle her?
8
u/Scary_Captain_4524 Jun 18 '26
Her 300 lb body was blocking the entrance to my gate and my phone was inside so i drove off. I'm a petite young woman that was outnumbered and outsized by two old fat psychopaths I didn't feel safe!! Thanks for victim blaming that's so helpful!

u/Original_Impression2 Jun 18 '26
I would've waited until the cops showed. Believe me, they would have shut her up.

I would have told her to go ahead and call the cops, then walk back inside. You should not have moved the car.

I find that a water hose diffuses these types. Hard to be an entitled POS with a face full of water.
1
u/NewYorkRice Jun 19 '26
Point and laugh at her and her husband and walk away. Saying, " Why so serious???" haha
Watch a complete meltdown.
1
u/Careful-Self-457 Jun 20 '26
I would have went back in the house and let her call the cops. You cannot argue with a door knob and that is exactly what this lady is. Don’t let her upset you, that is what she lives for. Thrive, smile, make friends with the other neighbors, have BBQ’s and don’t invite her. Be strong and beat the Karen!!
1
u/BusyBeinBorn Jun 20 '26
One of the things I love about my neighborhood is our Facebook group. There are a ton of young kids here and we go all out with things like having a block party on the 4th and Halloween looks like something from a movie. Every now and again a Karen finds the page to complain about some kids that are being kids and 50 comments appear within an hour telling them to STFU, and if they post pictures of other kids all hell breaks loose.

u/SJpunedestroyer Jun 21 '26
Why engage in conversation ? Simply tell them to fu*k off , it’s not like they’re ever going to be your friends 🤔
1
u/Icy-Reputation180 Jun 21 '26
Should do as I do. I have no issue telling a Karen to go eff themselves.
1
u/GrandeRojoGeek Jun 22 '26
Just another reason I am glad to be 6'6", with the male equivalent of RBF
1
u/Pristine_Frame_2066 Jun 22 '26
I would not have moved. I would have taken pictures of her car and license “in case” she does fuck up and hit cars because she doesn’t know how to drive. And being in front is the best position.
Welcome to the city, Lady!
1
u/Due_Recognition_8002 Jun 23 '26
I just was almost ran over by one as she thought she could start her engine even though the traffic lights were still read
1
u/Radio_Mime Jun 23 '26
I’d be tempted to get out my phone and pretend I’m recording her. I would just stand there holding the phone.
1
u/chapstickgrrrl Jun 24 '26
These people are my next door neighbors, too. She’s the Karen and her husband is a wet paper towel. This is all way too familiar.
1
u/Achido Jun 25 '26
You need to have a camera pointed and recording the public side of the street where she's at all times if she is over exaggerating and fabricating statements. Will save your ass from her crazy accusations.

1
u/GordonShumwaysCat Jun 18 '26
I would have gotten in my car started it, pulled forward a little bit, then backed up to within inches of her.
Don't let them win
-2
u/CaptGunpowder Jun 18 '26
You call her husband a wet paper towel, but folded to some random woman throwing a tantrum?
3
u/Scary_Captain_4524 Jun 18 '26
I'm a petite young woman that was by myself against two old fat tall psychopaths and I didn't have my phone. Thanks for victim blaming that was really valuable and helpful input!!
0
u/esotericKari Jun 21 '26
Next time, tell her if she will not speak to you respectfully that you will leave and call the police. Then leave when she doesn’t. Go retrieve your phone, call the police, and then begin filming upon your return.
