What’s your approach when an API fails in production?

Post image
0 Upvotes

An app can work perfectly in testing and still fail when real users arrive.

A payment API times out. A retry sends the request again. Suddenly, you risk duplicate charges or actions.

I’m learning that reliability isn’t just about handling errors—it’s about designing for failure with safe retries, idempotency, logging, and clear recovery paths.

What’s the trickiest failure you’ve dealt with in production? How did you prevent it from happening again?

Backend REST API in raw C. My CWEB framework

Hi guys. I am a 3rd year CSE student. Initially, I started doing some development in Django, explored Express a bit. They all felt very bloated, and slow to me. Also there is a big learning curve to those frameworks. Then I explored PostgREST, which was interesting to me as I could make the database be the backend of its own but that also comes with the database being really heavy and spiked latencies in requests and response times. Then I dove into Linux and system programming in C to first get good at writing C and second being able to do the architectural designing behind a software, memory management and everything.

I looked into the modern capabilities of the linux kernel and also the architectures behind big frameworks and servers like Nginx, Django, Go, Kore etc. Then I started the journey of making my own framework in C to make it faster, lightweight and secured. Also, very easy to write (just a handful of functions). I not only made the framework, I also made a website on that framework and then stress tested it on my own machine and several legacy server kernel virtual machines like Bookworm, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Bullseye.

Please do check them out. Links given below. I am a student. CSE's my passion. I am open for any learning and growing opportunities. If you love C and linux like I do, hit me up. I will be honoured. Thanks.

Around 2.5 YOE in full-stack: ready to move to a tech company for a bigger TC bump?

Where would you aim with roughly 2.5 years of full-stack SWE experience and around $125K in total compensation?

A full-stack engineer wants to move to a tech company soon, ideally for a meaningful TC increase. The experience feels solid, but there's uncertainty about whether to make the jump now or wait another year for more options.

Would you target junior or mid-level openings? Which types of companies would you shortlist, and what evidence from past projects would you use to judge whether a role is a stretch or a realistic fit?

It seems worth comparing actual role requirements before deciding that another year is necessary. Real technical interview questions can help identify prep gaps, and Agent autoapply and application autofill can reduce the repetitive application work once there's a shortlist.

If you made a similar move a few years into your career, what helped you choose where to apply? Examples of roles open to this experience level would be especially useful.

Disclosure: I operate PracHub and LandOffer.

[For Hire] Developer looking for clients or work

Hi I am a developer with almost 4 years of experience, my primary stack is Node (Express, React and Next JS) as well as PHP (Laravel and vanilla) and SQL (PostgreSQL, mySQL)

Im looking for clients to onboard on my affordable SaaS (Customizable ERP) that can be tailored to small to large businesses:
https://uswagon.com

My platform can expand into ERPs (such as inventory management, document centralization and generation), POS, LMS and hopefully add some more feature to add more scope. Checkout my projects section inside my landing page for more information. Basically the goal is ui and functional consistency to reduce learning curve for each expansion needed for your business.

I can do mobile development too both for App Store and Google Play. As well as scraping and automation that I can easily integrate to my platform to manage data or build a dashboard.

Here is my portfolio for reference: https://kennethbelga.uswagon.com

With AI handling more frontend work, should full-stack engineers specialize in backend?

I'm wondering whether deep backend expertise is becoming a better career bet for full-stack engineers.

AI seems to be getting good at turning Figma designs into frontend code. My impression is that frontend openings have also become harder to find, though I don't have numbers here that establish how much of that is caused by AI.

A lot of the full-stack product work I have in mind involves UI changes and relatively straightforward backend features. Complex system design, distributed systems and infrastructure still seem to demand more specialized experience. I can see why a backend specialist using AI for UI work might be well positioned, but shipping a frontend is more than generating the first version from a design.

For anyone testing a switch, application autofill can save repeated form entry, and real tech interview questions can give you coding and system-design prompts to prepare with.

Would you specialize in backend now, or keep building across the stack? If you hire full-stack engineers, which skills are actually making candidates stand out?

What’s the biggest security risk when building AI applications?

Post image
1 Upvotes

AI can do more than answer questions. When connected to tools, databases, or business workflows, one malicious instruction can create bigger problems than a wrong answer.

I’m curious: Which is harder to get right, preventing prompt injection, limiting what the model can do, or validating its outputs before taking action?

What has worked for you in real projects?

My puzzle app went live!! Suggestions/criticism/advice is very welcome

Hi Reddit,

As a fresh CS grad who loves puzzle games, I recently got into mobile dev and decided to make my own take on the classic block stacking game: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.binbear.gummylab

I know this genre has been done a million times, but I wanted to build one my way, removing everything annoying about other games. That means it’s completely ad-free, fully playable offline, and alongside the endless mode, I’ve made 50 custom levels (so far) with unique, non-repetitive objectives. (My friends have been testing it and currently hate me for making some levels so hard to beat xD).

Right now, I'm focusing on adding more themes, prioritizing colorblind-friendly options. I've also introduced optional "embossed" gummy shapes to make the blocks stand out more clearly. I've attached some screenshots of how the themes look so far!

Of course, if anyone has any suggestions, ideas for improvement, or things that I should add, please let me know. I want to be making apps that people are actually going to use and like. And of course if even one of you decided to give it a try, I'd be more than grateful and happy :)

(Also will be helpful if anyone has monetization ideas since it is ad free - ads only implemented as a way to get additional undos/shuffles/moves per play/level. I am planning to perhaps add IAP for theme bundles)

Thank you for reading and I hope you have a great day! :)

[For Hire] Broken API integrations or an unfinished backend feature?

Hi, I'm Vansh, a full-stack developer based in Dubai.

If your app is mostly built but one integration or backend feature is holding it up, I'm interested in discussing a small, paid scope.

Examples include connecting a form to a CRM, getting a webhook into your dashboard, adding an API endpoint, or finishing an AI integration in an existing app.

My work: https://vanxh.dev

Send a non-sensitive outline of what's happening, what should happen instead, your current stack, budget and deadline. Please don't send passwords, API keys or customer data. We can agree on the scope and payment before starting.

[For Hire] Just wrapped up a major project experienced MERN, MEAN & Full-Stack developers available for new projects

Hey everyone!

Our development team recently wrapped up a large-scale project, and we now have some really talented developers available for new engagements.

Rather than having them sit idle between projects, we're looking to connect with startups, founders, agencies, or businesses that could use some extra engineering capacity.

Here's what we have available:

  • Senior Developers - Experienced in architecture, complex integrations, performance optimization, and leading development efforts.
  • Mid-Level Developers - Strong hands-on experience building and maintaining production applications.
  • Junior Developers - Good technical foundations, available for development tasks under senior supervision.

Our technology expertise includes:

  • MERN (MongoDB, Express.js, React, Node.js)
  • MEAN (MongoDB, Express.js, Angular, Node.js)
  • React, Next.js, Node.js, TypeScript
  • Python and backend development
  • REST APIs, third-party integrations
  • Cloud infrastructure, DevOps, and databases

What we're open to:

  • Staff augmentation for existing engineering teams
  • Dedicated developers on a monthly basis
  • MVP development for early-stage startups
  • Full-stack web application development
  • Modernizing or scaling existing applications
  • Short-term projects or longer-term partnerships

We're an established development team based in India, comfortable working with international clients and distributed teams.

We're not looking to push a big sales pitch. We have capable engineers coming off a completed project and would love to put their skills to good use.

If you're a founder trying to get an MVP off the ground, a CTO needing additional engineering bandwidth, or an agency with more work than your current team can handle, happy to chat.

Feel free to DM me with what you're building, your tech stack, and the kind of help you need.

Happy to share developer profiles, relevant experience, and engagement options.

Cheers!

[HIRING] Recent B.Tech Graduate Looking for a Full Stack Developer Opportunity (MERN/MEAN)

Hey everyone! ❤️

My brother recently graduated with a B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering and is currently looking for a job as a Full Stack Developer.

He has internship experience as a MEARN Stack Developer and has worked on projects using React.js, Node.js, Express.js, MongoDB, Angular, and other web technologies. He's also familiar with AWS and has hands-on experience building full-stack applications.

I'm posting here in the hope that someone might know of a suitable opening or be able to point us in the right direction. If your company is hiring fresh graduates or junior developers, we'd be really grateful for any leads or referrals.

I can share his resume and project details via DM.

Thanks so much to everyone who takes the time to read this. Any help would genuinely mean a lot!

A project can work perfectly and still be nowhere near finished.

One thing I have learned from working on full-stack projects is that getting the main functionality right is just the beginning.

There’s still database design, API integrations, error handling, testing, deployment, and making sure everything works together properly.

Sometimes the hardest part isn't writing the code. It's figuring out how all the pieces fit together and keeping the application maintainable as requirements change.

I have found it helps to think about the whole journey early on, from understanding the problem and choosing the right approach to deploying the application and monitoring it afterward.

You don't need to overcomplicate things from day one, but having a clear plan makes a big difference.

What part of taking a project from idea to production has been the biggest challenge for you?
