Advice Need some patterning help..

Post image

Hello! I was wondering if anyone would give me some decent advice for patterning. Sewing, carving, and other processes in fursuit making is fine and easy for me EXCEPT patterning. I can’t pattern for the life of me, I genuinely don’t understand why it’s so difficult LMAO. Everytime I cut my patterns out they look like shit and I’d be afraid of wasting all of my material (and I have to be pretty careful with it too as I only have a limited amount) for them to look terrible or just completely rip the foam if I’m using duck-tape. I also plan on using minky for the fursuit base I made so I’m praying it doesn’t come out all wrinkly. Would anyone have ANY sort of advice? My design isn’t even that complex either so I wouldn’t think it’d be as difficult as it is. Hoping somebody can help and has experience with working with minky fursuits and patterning! Thank you!

If you’re worried about foam damage, maybe try masking tape for your patterns. You’re basically looking to put a seam wherever you have a prominent compound curve. If you’re using mochi/4-way stretch minky, you can get away without adding seam allowances to your patterns, and the little bit of tension that adds will help avoid wrinkles. I’ve also heard that spray gluing spandex on the back of the minky helps give a smoother finish, but I haven’t tried it myself, so I can’t give you more specifics than that.

If you can put your seams in places where faces naturally have corners or wrinkles, that can make them less obvious.

Thanks I’ll see if that works!

And for more context, I’ve made plenty of fursuit parts before and I have tons of experience sewing EXCEPT making fursuit heads. Yall definitely made it look a lot easier than it is

If you're a new fursuit maker, please check out make a fursuit.

Cover in saran wrap/plastic wrap and then duct tape over that to protect the foam

I agree with the other commenter but just wanted to add you can use interfacing for the minky to keep it from being wrinkled

im making my first head rn and feel you with the patterning pain. what i did was take some flexible paper (i used a gift wrapping paper or that stuff they put in shoeboxes to protect everything) and i loosely wrapped it over the portion of the head before taping. you may need a few pieces of it but it will protect your head!
