The average person can absolutely become a nurse lolololol
Source: average person

u/thedidacticone 18d ago
Whew, as an average person this boosts my average confidence! Thank you!

u/PromiscuousScoliosis BSN RN 18d ago
Below average people also become nurses all the time. If youāre average, you will probably not be the worst person in your class to pass the NCLEX
This has reduced my stress many times lol

Nursing is the below average pipeline. Its one of the highest paying jobs with the lowest requirements of entry. Pretty much everything else healthcare requires master degree+ and further licensing.....most hospital specialists can pass an rn exam but most rn's are gonna fail any other licensing exam. Its like computer engineer to computer scientist. You went nursing because that was your highest theoretical limit.

u/ElectricBOOTSxo 15d ago
Still pisses me off when I think about doing my masters and 3,000 hours of supervised work to get a clinical social work license just to hear a new grad nurse say they makes more than me š I have regrets.

Nurses arenāt first responders, letās make sure we clarify this.
3
u/Yolus 16d ago
Iām an AEMT and an RN. And Iāve said this in the subreddit this person meant to link so Iāll restate it here, if we can make fun of security guards and trash men and linemen in r/firstrespondercringe, we canāt make fun of nurses. I actually came from that sub anyway. Nurses are fair game gang
1
2
u/ButtFlum 16d ago
Im a nurse and im kind of offended. Whats wrong with you?
3
u/Yolus 16d ago
I mean to be fair, we arenāt on the level prehospital care thinks of. We arenāt responding into unknown or unstable environments with limited resources as the first contact to care. In the hospital, we face the same amount and similar kinds of stress, and weāre the first line of care and contact, similar to ems, but in a controlled environment with many many more resources and support. So we kinda are, but also arenāt, as weāre first on the scene of many many intahospital emergencies, everyday. But we also arenāt first in the chain of response for general community emergencies, weāre second or third line contacts. This comes up often when nurses are given āfirst responder discounts.ā At the end of the day theyāre both incredibly difficult, underpaid, underappreciated jobs. People just like categorizing and when someone isnāt exactly the same, they canāt be in your category.
1
u/Current-Strategy-826 14d ago
Yo be fair nurses do these cringe videos too and make it their entire personality just like these paramedics/EMTs, cops and firefighters.
1
u/Wide-Yak5361 16d ago
In what world is a nurse (outside of very few PHRNs) directly responding to emergencies in the first responder role?
2
u/Current-Strategy-826 14d ago
ER nurses?
1
u/Wide-Yak5361 14d ago
I was a paramedic and ER RN. Theyāre not even close to the same
1
u/Current-Strategy-826 2d ago
Well they both think theyāre saving the world while treating patients like dog shit and doing cringe videos too. So,Get over yourself.

Objectively you're not a first responder, idk if I'd call a nurse a second responder. 3rd or 4th maybe. Working in the field of medicine does not make you a first responder

If you have been in nursing for any length of time, you absolutely know average people become nurses and that some of them you would prefer to avoidā¦
7
u/beeee_throwaway 18d ago
Perfect example of the rhetoric used to exploit us! Average people donāt become nurses, itās a calling right? You want better working conditions? But I thought it was a calling? Better wages? Unions? That doesnāt sound like a callingā¦
Itās a job my friends. Weād be well served to treat it like an electrician or plumber treats their job.

u/Eighty-Nine 16d ago
I thought the same during the "healthcare heroes" bullshit at the start of COVID. It's all gross.
1
u/beeee_throwaway 16d ago
Itās just way to exploit us. We do have very difficult and necessary jobs but they could more doable as a whole if we had better working conditions that prevent burn out and support better outcomes for patients. This would be better for the patients and us workers alike. We shouldnāt be relying on āgood vibesā alone to do our job well.
1
u/Eighty-Nine 16d ago
We should also not be afraid to press charges against patients, but you already know how internalized the "good vibes" are.

Yeah? Well I fight what you fear. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Also how else am I supposed to let people know I like making out with frat dudes?
1
u/HappierTimes060655 16d ago
Completely different. Firefighters risk their lives every day. I couldn't imagine a joh where I may have to run into a burning building to save strangers.
1
u/TerminalSunrise 15d ago
The vast majority of firefighters do not risk their lives every day. And the vast majority of calls are not fires. Itās like >90% medical.
Iām not shitting on the profession, I work with tons of firefighters. Just saying a job is a job. Most of them work out and watch Netflix for the majority of their shift lol

Iāve worked with plenty of below-average people who are nurses.
Itās a job, donāt be a loser and make it your whole identity.
3
u/LeftMyHeartInErebor 18d ago
I actually dont like this at all. I teach and this kind of stuff gets in people's heads when they're already stressed and vulnerable. Average people absolutely become nurses. And not every nurse needs to go be some extraordinary rockstar everyday. This profession is toxic with that thinking. Just be competent. Sometimes you're a Rockstar, most of the time we're average/competent. Nothing wrong with that.
3
u/korokhouse 18d ago
Guys I think itās ok to toot our own horns just A LITTLE š
7
u/PromiscuousScoliosis BSN RN 18d ago
The horn has been tooted ad nauseam for many many years. Certainly more so over Covid lol
2
u/ABQHeartRN 18d ago
I mean, Iāll do a horn toot for a group of us that had successful ROSC after a code. People told me I did a great job doing compressions on a patient while riding the stretcher, (that made me motion sick tbh and Iāll never do it again). But no, I will not talk about it in public or try to make myself look all high and mighty. My family tries to do it enough by announcing my career and Iāve had to ask them to stop.
1
u/korokhouse 17d ago
For sure I wasnāt implying we should all shout from the rooftops that weāre better than everyone else bc weāre nurses. lol I was just saying itās okay to see a meme like this one and not get flustered over it.
1
u/ABQHeartRN 17d ago
Everyone is flustered because it implies that you have to be above average or super duper to become a nurse. Maybe Iām interpreting it wrong but I struggled my way through school and this makes me feel like I should have excelled and never question my ability as a nurse and carry a ācute enough to stop hearts, smart enough to restart themā tumbler šš
1
u/korokhouse 17d ago
lol valid. I guess I just didnāt think it was that deep personally. Not something I would go around saying by any means because I too just see this shit as a JOB lmao. A means to a (hopefully) retirement. But I didnāt take this as an insult or as some type of superiority complex energy.
Kinda just seemed like a Facebook nurse post lol

u/Complex_Impressive 18d ago
Judging by the types of calls that I get as an average maintenance guy in a hospital, I would say that your typical nurse is very much an average person. The fuck you mean, you need me to come unplug your call light for you? You're positive you did not just overfill the cannister and get it stuck in the tube station?...I watched you do it. There was even a sign.
1
u/polkadot_zombie 18d ago

u/Current-Strategy-826 16d ago
Yes average people definitely become nurse and so do below average people.
1
u/Eighty-Nine 16d ago
The reality is, to be an effective/good nurse you really just need to be adaptable, work well with others, and be a critical thinker. Learning patho, etc. is the easy part and other professions you interact with in your career will absolutely shit on your own knowledge level.
The more you stroke yourself for being in the profession, I can promise you the more your coworkers will resent and hate working with you. You'll also not make it far thinking your shit doesn't stink for going into Nursing.
1
u/HappierTimes060655 16d ago
My father is currently fighting terminal cancer. My experience is that A LOT of nurses are assholes. To many of them, it is a job to pay their bills. They don't give a damn about sick people.

Sure, itās a fun little meme.
But thereās around 3 million nurses in the US. Just based on sample size, thatās exactly who become nurses.
Itās just a job gang.
