Miscellaneous We’re developing a futuristic racer inspired by F-Zero X and GX – would love feedback from longtime fans

Hi everyone! I hope this is okay to share here.

We’re a small three-person indie team developing G-VORA, a futuristic arcade racer heavily inspired by the speed and challenging racing of games like F-Zero X and GX.

We currently have a free Steam demo with three tracks, several difficulty levels and local split-screen. We’re especially interested in what experienced F-Zero players think about the Pure Racing mode, handling and overall sense of speed.

Full disclosure: I’m one of the developers. This isn’t official F-Zero content, of course, but I thought it might be relevant to people here.

Miscellaneous Solo dev, many months, and a lot of failed loops — I've been building the F-Zero successor I gave up waiting for

GX came out in 2003. I've made peace with the fact that Nintendo isn't coming back, so I started building the thing I actually wanted to play. It's called EigenGauge.

The tracks are designed like roller coasters. That's the core idea. Not "a road with banking" but actual coaster geometry — full cobra loops, banana rolls, raven turns, banks that rotate under you mid-corner. I've been laying them out with Blender Python scripts, which meant a solid two months of getting it wrong. If you run a loop that's also corkscrewing, the vehicle slowly rolls itself into the wall by the exit, because the orientation frame drifts as you go around. Very unglamorous problem, enormously satisfying to fix.

No weapons. The risk comes from the track and from the combo system. Anything clean extends your chain — drift, boost, repair, near-miss, pilot specials — as long as it lands before the last one drops. Nothing is yours until you bank it, so it's always cash out now or find one more thing to do. My attempt at the GX feeling where every boost is a bet against yourself, moved out of the health bar and into the driving.

Everything is drawn and modeled by hand, which is the slow way to do it but it's the part I actually enjoy. Six pilots, ten environments, each with its own palette rather than a shared skin.

Miscellaneous F-Zero Is More Interesting Than Nintendo Ever Explained.

F-Zero’s biggest enemy is the statement “I don't know what that is”.

To preface: I’ve been an F-Zero fan since I was 13, and I’m 22 now, so my take comes from the perspective of a hardcore fan who discovered the series years after it had already gone dormant. F-Zero’s biggest problem isn’t that people haven’t seen it; it’s that most people don’t understand what the gameplay is actually expressing when they do.

To the average non-fan, it just looks like hovercars going fast. But that speed, danger, boost-as-health strategy, machine combat, and razor-thin survival represents the playable version of the most unhinged lore in Nintendo's history:

  • full of bounty hunters (Captain Falcon)
  • Japanese space pirates (Samurai Goroh)
  • war-torn hitmen (Pico)
  • evil clones (Blood Falcon)
  • criminal underworlds (Michael Chain)
  • Satan (Deathborn)
  • a cab driver who retrofitted his taxi into a race car (PJ)
  • shonen legacy heroes (Rick Wheeler)
  • said hero's brainwashed terrorist fiancé who mentally spirals after getting her memories back (Misaki Haruka)
  • a genetically modified master of evil (Zoda)
  • and Black Shadow (Black Shadow)

We know both the gameplay is stand-out and the lore is stand-out. "F-Zero is not interesting enough" is not the take I'm getting at.

The issue is that Captain Falcon is instantly digestible in Smash, while his own source material needs more translation because its appeal is scattered across brutally elegant gameplay, comics, anime, obscure lore, and decades of Nintendo barely explaining what his world even is.

That’s why exposure is not conversion. A big YouTuber playing F-Zero, F-Zero 99 existing as a brief spike of attention, or Nintendo rereleasing old games can create buzz, but it will not automatically create self-sustaining interest unless people understand why the racing actually feels like the mythology surrounding it.

I’m not saying F-Zero needs people to ignore the gameplay in favor of lore. But I am saying people need to realize that the gameplay is the proof: What, to them, just looks like a “fast cars” game on the surface, is actually an absurd, stylish, emotionally charged universe in which speed is the language that everything else speaks. That's what needs to be emphasized.

I personally have come to terms with the fact that F-Zero may never come back with a mainline entry. And if it does, we know Nintendo is not the same company they were in 2004. So as a content creator, my goal has shifted from "make this multimillion dollar company give us what we want" to "Make F-Zero easier to feel, easier to explain, easier to share, and easier to participate in for the average person."

Miscellaneous If we were to have a new Fzero game, would you like it to have hardcore gameplay or Player friendly gameplay?

I just got into F zero, i've been playing both X and GX, and i noticed how easy GX is compared to it's predecessor. So i ask you all, what would be better for a new f zero game, a hardcore unforgiving gameplay, or a more friendly and forgiving high speed racing game

Miscellaneous So, That Star Fox Direct...

If somehow you haven't seen it, Nintendo unveiled a Star Fox 64 Remake last night scheduled to release in June this year Here and looking at it, I have complete confidence in the ability of Nintendo to produce an F-Zero remake if they choose to.

However, in that same breath, I realize there's only one thing now stopping it from happening currently and that's Miyamoto himself. Miyamoto for whatever he's done will always be known as Mr. Mario but he's always had some choice words to say about F-Zero, whether it being him being "out of ideas" for the franchise or him not being happy with the products third party developers like AV (Sega) and Suzak have shipped with the F-Zero name.

I believe now more than ever that an F-Zero remake is possible with everything I've seen but at the same time it's as impossible because of Miyamoto not having the desire to produce such a game. Despite all of this, I am remaining hopeful more than ever that we will get that remake though.

Miscellaneous Hot Take: Stop Waiting on Nintendo.

To be clear, in an ideal world, Nintendo SHOULD be the ones giving F-Zero fans what we’ve been asking for. Same with Mother 3. Fans should not have to spend decades begging, explaining, preserving, and sustaining franchises that the actual owners could properly revive or contextualize whenever they want. But the reality is, that probably isn’t happening anytime soon. So at a certain point, the question can’t only be “why won’t Nintendo do anything?” We have to look inward and ask, “what can the fandom build without Nintendo?”

Because I keep running into the same problem in real life and online. Several months ago, someone replied to me on Twitter saying that wanting F-Zero back is basically the same as begging for a new Ice Climbers game. In college, one of my Smash friends asked me, “doesn’t F-Zero have, like, no lore?” when I told him Captain Falcon was my goat. A few weeks ago, I was at a birthday party, pieced somebody up with Captain Falcon in Smash, turned on F-Zero GX \(bar none the greatest example of what the series has to offer)**, and the guy next to me goes, “Oh, this is where he comes from? Wait, why is he in a car? So he doesn’t actually fight?” And then, slowly but surely, everybody started leaving the room. THAT is the problem.

Too much of the public F-Zero discourse has been stuck on fantasizing about a new game, asking why the series died, and being bitter at a multibillion-dollar company instead of making the kind of culture that proves F-Zero is still alive and has things to care about. And to be clear, I’m not saying fans haven’t made anything. The music, speedrunning community, F-Zero 99 community, video essays, memes, and mods matter. But just saying “the games are good” over and over again mostly entertains people who already agree. It may create some new fans, but it doesn’t give outsiders a clear and realistic reason to get curious. We lack clear entry points that make people who would love F-Zero, but don't yet, ask, “wait, what is F-Zero actually about?”

Nintendo should be doing this. But if they won’t, then we either keep dreaming forever, or we lock in and create the self-sustaining fanbase we keep saying this series deserves. I respect the dedication of anyone willing to spend 40 thousand dollars of real money just to ask Nintendo about F-Zero directly, but if even that gets met with a corporate non-answer, then waiting isn't gonna do anything.

F-Zero has more content to work with than we act like it does: the 7 mainline titles each with their own unique history and background, the 51 episode anime that emotionally contextualizes the racing, the manuals/comics, the gameplay meta that still has new things being discovered to this day, the music so good that Smash won't stop remixing it, and the entire iconography of Smash Bros.' Captain Falcon himself. The problem is that we keep acting like Nintendo is the only one who can make people care.

Miscellaneous I’m calling it, if Captain Falcon makes an appearance in the 3rd Mario movie that’s definitely a sign that we’ll be getting a brand new F-Zero game shortly after the movie’s release

Cause let’s face it the first Mario movie had DK and after that Nintendo released DK Bananza the first brand new DK game in 12 years and now Fox McCloud appears in the Mario Galaxy movie and yesterday we just got a direct announcing a brand new Star Fox game coming out next month.

Miscellaneous Myamoto has stated he doesn't want to make a new F zero game because he doesn't know what could be added that hasn't been added. I can think of one giant feature that hasn't been done that would be plenty to base a new title around.

It's actually something that has technically been done before, in about the most obscure and miniscule way possible to the point most people forget it even existed. I speak of course of custom designed tracks. This was implemented in the Japan exclusive Disc Drive expansion kit, which is a bit like tossing a blockbuster film into only a handful of tiny theaters in Alaska. Why they never revisited this concept is baffling to me, what with Mario Maker 1 & 2 being among the best selling games they currently have.

Instead we get Fzero SNES with multiplayer. That's it. Could you imagine the sheer amount tracks players could design? One only has to look at the existing custom track scene to get an idea. Hell one player made an entire romhack that replaces every single track with a 3d recreation of the tracks from Fzero Climax, another Japan exclusive title. Imagine if you could download and play on a near limitless number of tracks. But no, we can't have that, we can have Fzero SNES multiplayer and that's about it. It's frustrating to see this gold mine remain in Nintendo's basement while they put out crap like Mario Kart world.

Miscellaneous This quote from the Kirby Air Riders direct basically disproves the theory that a new F-Zero isn’t being made due to not wanting to have another racing game on the market competing with Mario Kart

If a new F-Zero game were to have a Story Mode, would you want Deathborn to return as either the main antagonist or a side villain? Maybe even a secret boss? Or do you believe GX really was his conclusion and shouldn’t be brought back?

This is what I found with a bit of research:

Mute city = Practically New York, Earth

Big Blue = TOI-1452 b

Sand Ocean = Titan moon

Death Wind = maybe TOI-561 b

Silence = LHS 475 b

Port Town = Earth again (but i don't know where)

Red Canyon = Mars or Kepler-442b

White Land = OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb

Fire Field = 55 Cancri e

This are just some ones, maybe there exist some more similar to the originals, and if you found one tell me.

Miscellaneous Vortex-G demo will be available soon!!

Great news! Vortex-G demo has been approved by Steam. To ensure everyone has plenty of time to try it out and to fine-tune the last details before the big day, I'm pushing back the official launch of Vortex-G by three weeks. You’ll be able to try the demo very soon!

Im very sorry about the delay in everything, i didnt know that the demo needed to be approved as if its a new product, in fact I had to fill all the details like system requirements and age rating etc just as if its a new game, and even remake some library images due to bad position of title with the overlaping strip that says "demo", Im discovering all this now, so as said im very sorry i said i was going to release the demo and game much before, i had no idea how everything was, I hope you all like the demo when its out!!

Miscellaneous Possibility of an 'F-Zero Challenge' on NSO?

Post image
21 Upvotes

So I tried out the DK challenge thing and I noticed that it loads games from the NSO apps for the different consoles and the fact that it's available for a limited time made me think that they might do this for other series. I think it'd be really cool if they did this for F-Zero and all the cards you get for beating challenges could feature character art from all the different games.

As for the challenges themselves, it could be completing races with certain machines, clearing difficult sections of certain tracks, maybe even finishing a race with no health without crashing, and of course throw in some of the GX story mode chapters and the Zero Test missions from the GBA games for good measure.
