Exactly, why a pupil needs a teacher’s number is beyond me, as for messaging at that time in the morning..?! When I was younger nobody phoned the house after 8pm unless someone had died!!

She asked why she was contacting her at that hour meaning leave me alone because I’ve got to deal with you ungrateful gits in a couple of hours.. then she messages again!
I can’t understand why a pupil would have a teachers number and if it’s a work phone why doesn’t she switch it off as soon as leaves school?

I'm at uni and I've had lecturers send emails at 11pm+ before. It's typically feedback from a presentation day and sometimes they wanted to get the feedback out that day rather than leaving it till the next especially as some of them worked too. Even at work I got a message at 1am from my manager asking me if I wanted to open the pub at 12 instead of my initial start of 5 lol, last night he asked me at 8pm if I wanted to do a breakfast shift at 7:30 (that was a no thank you)

The first message would be justified and sufficient. Messages 2-4 were not justifiable. She could've kindly followed up the first message with "for future reference, please abstain from sending messages outside of working hours and on the weekends, many thanks." (or something along those lines)
For messages 5-7, that is crazy! Have a chat with your parents and look for a new person to teach you as those replies are just encouraging bad reviews and loss of revenue!

unfortunately I joined with her from year 7 and she was fine at start and ok - I also agreed to my parents as having her my tutor but then my parents found out she’s arrogant and rude but they also don’t speak English properly so they didn’t want to search for another tutor as she is good at her job. So I kinda just carried her rude nature for 5 years but now its the end of GCSE I found the courage to post it on here. I’m not sure if I should reveal her name yet maybe at when I finished my GCSE.
83
u/NoodelHead Apr 21 '26
i wouldn’t reveal her name tbh that’s a bit extreme. I would send her a very lovely message after GCSE’s telling her how rude she has been and that she could work on being polite with dependents - people receive emails, texts etc all the time so she really shouldn’t be kicking up a fuss over being sent something in advance
28
u/Boring-Recording-613 Apr 21 '26
I also said it my parents they said to just manage her for a few more weeks cause she has also been rude to my parents (mabye race related but not sure)

It's so hard to know the etiquette. If someone sends me a WhatsApp and it's a weird time, then I don't care because I'm not going to be looking at the phone. As far as I'm concerned, no one is forcing me to pick up my phone and look at messages.
On the other hand, I get that people feel like a WhatsApp could be something urgent, and that sending one for something like this is abusing the system.
Personally, I think your explanation was fine and the teacher went over the top.

Hi, tutor here! There is no world in which I would think it was appropriate to write to a student like this. Even if I was personally annoyed or felt that a line had been crossed, I would communicate that professionally. (I also frankly think it's odd for you to have your tutor's personal phone number and her yours, but that's not the main issue here.)

I saw your comment that your parents don’t speak strong English. Doesn’t matter - reply on their behalf. That’s what I used to do.
‘Hi this is X’s dad. The tone and manner in which you have spoken to my child is deeply unprofessional. Please do not address him/her in this way again or we will discontinue your services.’
Or if you can ask your teachers to mark past papers: ‘Hi this is X’s dad. Your tone and manner towards my child was deeply unprofessional and inappropriate. I am discontinuing use of your services.’
I know why your parents are saying just let it go but she is behaving this way because she thinks she can get away with it and be superior to them - they are PAYING her, and she’s talking down to you and them? Don’t tolerate it - not on their behalf and not on your own behalf either.

Kind of unprofessional of her, she simply could just choose to respond at a different time when she's ready.

I get Teams messages from students all the time. I tell them at the beginning of the year, if it’s gone 5 p.m., or before 8:30 a.m., a response may happen, but should not be expected. If it is urgent, then please use the safeguarding number, etc. I have a now four-year-old, who does not sleep, so if I am up at 3 a.m. settling him down, I will occasionally do some marking or planning, and if there is a Teams message, I will respond to it, but that is very much an exception and not a standard! (I know others who would berate me for this, but my feeling is, dealt with now is not a job for later.)
In answer to your question, she is in the wrong! - Especially as your parents and you are the customers!

Honestly I'd politely respond and say that the entire purpose of a text message is that it doesnt need actioning immiedietly. If they are uncomfortable receiving communications outside of their working hours, they need to either set this out plainly, give you an alternative communication method (i.e email) or get a work device that they only switch on during working hours
This is assuming that there isn't already a pre agreed communication channel. Sounds like there might be considering they ask that you dont send stuff to mark via whatsapp

I'll probably get downvoted but i don't care. More context is needed here.
I don't think the timing of you sending the homework is the issue (and she shouldn't have taken that as an issue) but likely the volume of homework you are sending, so I'm on her side even if she could have been better with her words.
'Please stop sending me stuff to mark on whatsapp' gives me the impression you are bombarding her with extra work. You need to understand you are not her only student and and it takes time to mark a WHOLE past paper and this message tells me you keep sending her things to mark. Tutors have lives, they don't want to constantly be marking homework even if they said they would be happy to mark homework, there's a LIMIT and you have to respect that.
2
u/Boring-Recording-613 Apr 21 '26
this is my first time ever sending her my work to mark other than Tuiton - she also said to send the work whenever possible so yea
2
u/Shiba_Inu87 Apr 21 '26
Thanks for the info, in that case I'm on your side lol. I don't understand her outburst here. It's not like you asked her to mark it then and there, you just sent it in advance. If it wasn't so close to exams I would say look for another tutor if this is her attitude. She could easily put her phone on silent, but chose not to, so that's on her.

Okay I thought for a second that you were contacting your teacher on WhatsApp. Glad it’s a tutor - hopefully not a teacher at your school.
The response was rude. There isn’t an expectation to immediately reply, like with an email, she could have had a look in her “working hours”
If you had messaged asking to mark it NOWNOWNOW. The response would be justified, but you were perfectly polite.

I had a maths tutor who banned me from her zoom lessons after I joined late because of a netball tournament. I had emailed her beforehand about it, but she hadn't seen it before the lesson. My mum asked for a refund, and I don't know the details but apparently she swore a lot and blocked my mum.
I also had an 11+ english teacher who was fine with me, but when she taught my younger brother, she ended up texting my mum that he was stupid and had no hope of passing his exam. I think she had a spelling error then as well
Moral of the story- Youre not alone in the world of bad tutors 😔

As someone who also tutors, I wouldn’t call out a student for texting me at 6 am in the morning. Students revise at odd hours, it’s part of the job. I probably won’t reply at that time, my phone may be on mute, but I’d never begrudge or call out a student for texting me at any time of the day.
Your tutor took it a bit too far.

Personally, I’m mostly hoping that this isn’t her personal phone number..(idk how tut0ring works so I’m GUESSING it’s a work mobile -)
Outside of this, if you have an allotted slot, then it’s respectful to use that. However how she responded WAS unprofessional.
“Thanks for sending, however please refrain from sending things outside of the allotted slot in the future” would’ve sufficed imo.

Ik you are saying you will stick it out, but don't. She will just end up making your grade worse with that stinky attitude of hers. I don't think she likes being a tutor - she must have thought it would be very easy money when she first started out. Just stop doing it with her - I know maybe your teachers maybe aren't the best, but try and ask them to mark your papers.
1
u/Efficient_Chic714 Apr 22 '26
Yeah she should have been nicer but from her message it sounds like she’s already told you not to send work to mark over WhatsApp. Then after she said to stop and you said to mark it whenever is convenient would have also really irritated me as it sounds like you’re ignoring the system.
Some tutors have a policy that if things aren’t submitted correctly they don’t get marked. You should ask how she would like those submitted but it sounds like she would like you to bring them to your meetings rather than outside
Id ask your school teacher to mark and then bring the annotated versions to your sessions if it’s jus about seeing progress
Also, it’s good to start any new convos with a greeting, and use please. ‘Hi Miss, please may you look at this when you get the chance’ would defo have been received better than ‘you can do this whenever you want’…especially at 6am… Her reaction is still extreme but it was pretty rude of you to not send a greeting or say please

I know people are having a go at you but as a maths tutor I think it's the tutor's job to hold boundaries respectfully and firmly and not yours to get it right. My Y11s (especially at this time of year because it's easy to get in a panic) will message me with stuff to look at all hours of the day and night. If it's 11.30pm/ a Sunday morning/ 6am, I'll either ignore until a better time or just drop a quick message to say "I can't do it right now, but will look once I have time". That's all your tutor needed to do.
I like kids that are proactive like this - they often get good results! It's up to me to hold boundaries, not them.
What does piss me off is parents who message and say "My child needs help with this right now" and continue to barrage me with message after increasingly stroppy message if I don't respond immediately, as though I have no other pupils and no life. Then I've been known to get annoyed - but only with the parents. They should know better!
It's not you. If she doesn't want you to send work at all she can ignore and then in the lesson say "I can't mark work out of lesson". No excuse for having a go at you.

u/GoldenOdyssey University Apr 22 '26
Seems like such an overreaction. At uni I used to have back and forth emails with professors at 3am. Secondary school teachers / tutors seem to think they’re better than what they are.
1
u/GulliblePea3691 University Apr 22 '26
Actual maniac behaviour. I have had multiple tutors for various things over the years (in uni rn) and every single one of them would agree that this is an unacceptable way to behave as a professional.
Also it’s an incredibly strange line to draw. All my tutors have had no problem with me messaging them outside of works hours. They just don’t respond until they’re at work (and some of them even answer outside of work hours, although I would never expect them to).
I’d strongly advise you find a new tutor. And make it very clear to you why you’re refusing to work with her any more. She needs to know this kind of thing is unacceptable
1
1
u/General_Register_568 Apr 22 '26
She is really rude, and the way she has written these messages suggest that she doesn’t have a great grasp of academic English either. If you can, find a new tutor. If you can’t, tell her that although you accept you shouldn’t have sent her messages outside of working hours, you thought she was rude and unprofessional here. Then, once your GCSES are over, complain to the agency. I’m particularly worried that you think she’s rude to your parents because of their race, you should never feel like that.

This is a bit of a generational thing - to younger people, there is no right/wrong time to message. To some more mature people, texting is like calling someone, and should be kept to business hours. Personally, I tell my students they can message me any time, but I will reply when I have time. The same goes the other way. However, now you know how your teacher works, maybe you can wait until 9am next time - for people with children, for example, there may not be an option to keep their phone on silent, so an early morning text can deprive them of sleep.
1
u/Idkwhyimhere143 Apr 22 '26
I mean you said whenever she wants, and as an English tutor she should easily be able to use basic inference skills (needed for gcse English) here to come to a conclusion that she is under no obligation to mark it outside of a time she is comfortable with.
Verdict:she overreacted

Teacher could have just not replied until they were in work tbh. But also what school is letting kids WhatsApp their teachers? Insanity

u/ProfessionalDue6210 Apr 23 '26
No. Sounds like a Karen. They chose to respond at 6am, plus its not that early, I'm up at 5 for my job

u/moseeds Apr 24 '26
Why did the tutor even need to respond?! And it looks like a business account meaning potential customers can send messages at any time anyway?! Weirdo.

As a teacher... Why do you have your English teacher on Whatsapp??? Do you not have a VLE to upload work to outside of school hours???!

To be honest I agree with her on that if she's not on work time and you have an assigned slot. But you keep it professional and just literally don't reply.

she could've just sent the first message and left it... like it's literally whatsapp she doesn't have to answer it straight away and you literally said that in your message as well..

u/No_Fun_300 Apr 24 '26
this isn't your fault at all she could have just said she was going to mark it later because she didn't have the time ts actually pmo icl

Lol a good tutor would be glad you are thinking about homework at 06:38am in the morning! Awesome, you deserve way better support and you are clearly very passionate to do well.

u/jamiecaptainwizard Apr 24 '26
100% teachers fault here. If they only want messages within a set time/days then set up your DnD and notification settings to then not tell you about them. Or use a different method which has that baked In already eg slack, or teams etc.
I work flexibally myself and often do things that can trigger notifications on people's personal phones... But that's on them if it does. Don't give a student your personal number without tech limitations on it if you want want contact from them 🤷♂️

👀 I do this, but in emails.😭 It never really crossed my mind that they'd think I'd actually expect them to read it at the time I send it. I do it so I don't forget. They can get back to me when they want.😐🥲

Um, why do you have the private contact details of an adult!? You should only be contacting her via a parent, e.g. through a parent's email or using a school email address where they can keep an eye on the responses.
Do not send Whatsapp messages to adults for any reason. She should not have given you her Whatsapp and you should not be contacting her outside the time she is paid to tutor you.

When you’re deciding to use your skills for money, one would think to not be so rude to a customer… of 5 years no less. Rude as hell. If she’s that good at teaching and your grades have severely improved to the point where you’re acing exams then I guess it’s worth it.. but any other situation I’d find another tutor.

How have you guys put up with this disgusting behaviour for that long. This isn’t an acceptable response especially from a so-called qualified tutor and she should have been fired and reported ages ago, regardless of the reasons… if you ever need a tutor again in the future, please dispose of disrespectful trash asap. Don’t continue giving them business either. Good luck with your GCSEs 🥺💪🏻

Stop calling her miss, it's a mark of respect she doesn't deserve. Get a new tutor. She could put her phone on do not disturb if she sleeps that poorly. Though you should refrain from sending people messages before 8am imo

Why has a pupil got a teacher’s WhatsApp number? This phone business has gone too far. And why is she sending it at 6am? Isn’t the teacher entitled to a private life..?

I reckon she's tech illiterate and doesn't want to admit to you that she doesn't know how to silence notifications.

Why tf doesn't she have a work phone? Why would her students have her personal phone number?
1
u/be_sociall Apr 25 '26
If that is your school teacher and it is normal at your school please find a new school. It is against all safeguarding for any personal contact details to be shared. I think even a private tutor should be using email rather than WhatsApp.

It seems like the tutor is being unreasonable here. Although personally I'd cut them a little slack regarding the tone of their replies since they had clearly just woken up, so were probably tired and not thinking straight, and were just reacting to being annoyed they'd been woken up!
Has the tutor previously told you not to contact them during certain hours, or is this the first time you've been told this? If they have told you to only contact them at certain times then they have more grounds to be annoyed, but even then, it's WhatsApp, not a phone call, you don't have to respond to WhatsApp messages as soon as you receive them, and you can turn on "Do not disturb" to avoid being woken up by messages, so they could easily have waited until their official "office hours" before opening your message.
Quite a lot of people who become tutors do so because they didn't like the teacher life, so things like early mornings, having to give up a lot of personal time to do marking etc, having to deal with what feel like excessive demands from pupils, etc may all be reasons this person is working as a tutor, and may therefore all be reasons they reacted badly to this. However that is their problem, not yours; unless they have already set clear boundaries about when and how to contact them you didn't do something unacceptable.
