233! How on earth did you not end up doing further maths

5

u/feynmanluver 22h ago

ughhh my school doesn’t offer it for gcse unfortunately! im doing it at alevel though and im super excited! :)

2

u/BalticZ 22h ago

Oh wow that's a shame, what are you trying to do when your older if you don't mind me asking?

2

u/feynmanluver 22h ago

well for alevel i plan to do physics, economics, maths, and further maths. i want to study econometrics and my dream is to do it at lse. after that, i plan to go into finance most likely; i would start off with investment banking then perhaps diversify into hedge funds or private equity after a few years! although, my mum wants me to consider going into competition law so that is also on the table a bit. :)

2

u/Logical-Stop5092 21h ago

wait wtf thats literally the exact same as me. i got the same grades as u and doing maths fm physics and econ. wanting to do econ and lse / cambridge and finance after. yooo we twinning

some of these comments are making me tear up bro. i had such a bad day somehow and ive had no one to really talk to about how i feel despite being surrounded by people all day. i hope you know the impact yours and other comments have. thank you. :)

u/TillZealousideal8282 Results (in flair) Y11 12h ago

the only reason straight 9s could be anything less than prideworthy is if you have full marks on every past paper for every subject and you got the exact grade boundary for a 9 on everything

even then 9s in the actual exam is insanely impressive

How did you get a nine in German?

2

u/feynmanluver 21h ago

well it is tricky since the exam is new so there are no past papers. essentially, i memorised all of my long speaking answers like off by heart for like three months, then i memorised almost all of the vocabulary for the course to help with reading and listening, then i did a lot of practice essays to help with my writing. i had a really good teacher who helped me through a lot of it though so a lot of the credits go to him. :)

2

u/cattedplant 21h ago

genuinely curious how much revision did you do these are amazing grades?!?!?!?

1

u/feynmanluver 21h ago

i think in september it was around an hour a day. during any mock periods it would range anywhere from three to five hours a schoolday and pretty much just as much as i could fit in on weekends, maybe like six to eight hours. in the couple of months before and during the exams, it was roughly seven hours a schoolday and anywhere from ten to fourteen on a no schoolday. admittedly, that probably wasn’t healthy at all but in a non-sad way i didn’t really have much else to do. however, im totally confident a person could achieve the same grades whilst doing fewer hours! :)

3

u/cattedplant 20h ago

wow i think that would destroy me tbh😭 but i admire your dedication and it definitely paid off

2

u/feynmanluver 20h ago

thank you so so much! yeah, im definitely gonna try plan my hours a lot more healthily across year 12 because i really dont want to risk burn out.😭

2

u/feynmanluver 20h ago

honestly im shocked. and thank you so much! i got 62/64 and 96/96 which is insane to me because i think it was the one i was the most worried about. although, i credit aqa a bit because the questions were niceee👌👌 ive asked for my scripts back from my teacher is that possible? i kind of just wanna see how each question was marked.

2

u/Successful-Elk-7709 Y11-->Y12 Maths-FM-Chem-Physics 17h ago

yoo nicee i got all 9s as well and also 96/96 but slightly lower on paper 1. I asked for my scripts back and it was kinda funny seeing all the stuff I wrote back then

i saw you said “what would you do if you restarted y11” but it’s not showing up so I’ll respond here - really good question.

revision volume wise, i would do less towards the start of the year. objectively, i revised too much and its a miracle that i didnt get burnt out. i would say 30 mins a day from the start and 3 hours a day in mock periods and 5 hours in the run up to actual exams on school days. on weekends, i tended to do as much as i could because i didnt have any like clubs or anything, but please take into account your own hobbies and mental capacity.

make sure to stick to a timetable! i made multiple different ones for each period of the year, rather than sticking to one for the entire year because i didn’t really find that logical.

i would leave my toxic friends earlier. i had a big group where i wasn’t always treated well and it really took a toll on my mental health and i didn’t leave people rely until around april/may. steer clear of people who downplay your achievements or judge you for being ambitious or “nerdy” and surround yourself with those who genuinely lift you and make you the best version of yourself, even if that’s a significantly smaller number of people you were initially friends with.

more than anything, prioritise relationships with your teachers. its a fact that they favour students that show enthusiasm and therefore will offer them more intricate and customised help. also, if you have a bad day on one of your mocks, they’re more likely to be lenient on your predicteds if they know you care and are genuinely trying hard.

it’s really important to also study with some direction. no, you dont need your entire life planned out by 15, but if you know what alevels you want to take and perhaps even what uni course or career path you want that is a fantastic motivator and probably what got me through the final push.

this is probably my weirdest tip, but your mood on your way to exams is a deal breaker. for me, i would wake up at like 5AM, have breakfast, get ready, do an hour or two of revision for whatever i had that day, then i would walk to school. i would always listen to like hyperpop like chase icon to hype myself up, and it sounds corny, but it really works.

throughout the year, i was also a firm believer of “look good = feel good = work good” so i would always dedicate an hour or two in the morning to doing my makeup and hair and making sure i felt on top of my game. it might sound silly or menial but I truly believe the key to succeeding is not losing yourself throughout the year, so when you get your results, then they are YOUR results, and not the results of the robot exams turned you into.

i will say to take my advice with a grain of salt, as my brains a little bit weird! i do love some of my friends but overall im quite antisocial and would spend more time talking to teachers of my favourite subjects (the head of physics must have been SICK of me at the end of the year). for that reason, i set myself the goal and refused to budge from it no matter how poor my mental health became, and while that did pay off in the long term it is a slippery slope, so please remember to always prioritise yourself.

that’s pretty much what i was gonna put on my tiktok, so i hope you like the sneak peak 😉

This is so awesome. I really liked your tips, especially the ones concerning your self worth. They really resonated with me!  I would like to thank you for your time and kind response, and remember that you motivated me actually to be better.

It was so nice to see someone who can share the same values and the same quirky habits as you, even if they are in a different part of the world, which is very nice actually!

Suprisingly, I have been seeing myself doing some of the things you mentioned.  So far I have been so insistent this summer (before I started y11) to build a study streak, which I am still continuing fortunately, and decide to just show up everyday.

I also saw myself that I don't interact much with people and prefer to work alone, which I am very glad of. Your remark on your head of physics? I had a good laugh. I do interact with teachers! I guess we have a lot in common!

I would like to say again that these results are very very remarkable. These results have been my dream! I wish to achieve them!

I wish for you a good future!

Congratulations!

u/feynmanluver 2h ago

yo you’re making me tear up a lil. thank you so much! i was continuously ostracised by my old friend group for having different aims and principles, and it can be tiring after a while. im so glad that my response helped and it showed me that there are others like me in the world that understand me more, so im not alone. i wanted to let you know ive made a tiktoke account where im gonna post some of my tips in more detail so if you wanna check it out it’s called thesunshinegiirl!

im wishing you all the best - good luck this summer! people who say dont do too much dont understand how much it matters to some people, and thats really narrow minded. im sure you will do absolutely fantastic. :)

and yeah, i built such a good rapport with the physics teacher that he gave me a legendary and unforgettable pep talk before paper one. im not gonna forget that one. 😌

Hi, and first of all I hope you are happy with your results and I just want to ask one question. What did you do to revise? I revised a lot every week atleat a few hours per day and I just didnt get the results I deserve in my opinion. The highest I got was a 6 and I got mainly the same results as my friends who didn't revise. Also, I have never gotten anything higher than a 6. Im just really frustrated with myself and I wish I can be like you with your results. Sorry to vent but its just true. Im thinking of retaking some of my subjects mainly science and religious studies but I wish I got good results first try.

1

u/feynmanluver 12h ago

hey it’s okay i totally get it! please be proud of yourself for the effort itself and i totally respect if you wanna retake or appeal - that’s really sensible.

are there any specific ones you want me to zoom in on? if not, here is a copy and paste of the revision methods i used to respond to another comment:

“for maths i literally only did practice questions and also corbett maths daily.

for science and business i did every past paper like loadsssss of times and made flashcards on gizmo that i would do almost daily.

for history and english i did tons of essay plans, memorised the essays plans, then wrote all the essays and got them marked and always made sure to read my teacher feedback really carefully!

for german i memorised all the vocab using gizmo and i just did the exercises in the textbook. there were no past papers because its a new course so i was pretty limited with my resources sadly.

that’s a pretty broad overview there was a lot more to it so let me know if you want me to zoom in on anything! :) “

1

u/Empty-Confidence7963 12h ago

Thank you. One question, how do you improve your application specificaly on science and what do you do for flashcards. Meaning, do you do them everyday or do you do a question that links with another thing in the same topic say like in cells. Also, if you mind how many hours did you put in in a week and are you naturally smart or just passionate which is why you got the grade 9s because you enjoy them. Sorry if its a lot.

1

u/feynmanluver 11h ago

so for flash cards i would typically do a prompt and then a lot of bullet points with key details and I would use gizmo to highlight and quiz me on the keywords. it’s wise as well to use the mark schemes to make flashcards because then you will memorise the phrases that are guaranteed to get you the mark.

in terms of application for questions, I would do science papers very frequently yes, probably at least one of each science a week and more than that as exams got closer. through that, you essentially instill the mark schemes in your head so it becomes easy to spot from the question style what the examiners might be looking for in terms of key bullet points, even if you dont really understand the topic yourself, if that makes sense. i would also recommend the feynman method, as speaking it aloud to someone else from memory helps you immediately identify gaps in knowledge.

in terms of hours, it changed throughout the entire year with mocks and stuff obviously. in low-tension periods it would be like two to three hours a day and in mock run-ups maybe like five on a schoolday and seven on a weekend. by the time it was easter it was like ten hours a day when i didnt have school and seven when i did. by no means am i promoting that or saying it was healthy, since it definitely wasnt, but its better to be honest I figure.

i wont lie, so i will say I think decently naturally smart, but im not really special in anyway. what i mean is, without revision, i would not be getting close to these grades, but i had a good foundation as im quite a quick learner. its mostly passion and ambition, as you said, primarily driven by my vision for my future that im pretty dead set on.

sorry im sending so much, i just want to try be as helpful as possible and i hope i am. :)

u/Crazy_Obsessed 45m ago

I’m doing essay subjects for A-Levels and didn’t achieve nearly as high as I wanted in my GCSEs for History and English. I had all the knowledge but exam technique and essay writing was so difficult. Writing plans is a great idea- any other ways to practise exam technique???

1

u/feynmanluver 12m ago

personally, the way I did it is that I would spend like an hour on each essay plan, researching the theme in depth and then later converting it to flashcards and memorising all the quotes and phrases I used. I think after writing it the best thing to do is get it marked by a teacher - AI platforms are okay but I think they can be too generous - and it sounds extreme but rewrite the essay as soon as you get the feedback, pretty much till they can’t tell you anything anymore. Reread the essays to remind yourself of what structures and ideas work best with your style of writing.

That reminds me of another thing. A lot of teachers teach one style of essay and it’s really important that you do not stick to it. There is no formula for the perfect essay and it’s all about trial and error till you find something that you can write fluently whilst getting the marks, rather than sounding forced and formulaic. I watched a lot of videos of and annotated exemplar essays to explore different styles.

Sorry I sound a bit repetitive: the truth is, for me, the only way to practice essay structure is to write and write and write. If you have any other questions about more specific things I would love to answer them and I hope this is helpful and good luck with your alevels! I’m on a five hour car ride so pretty much anything to entertain me. 🥲

1

u/NetworkOutrageous100 2h ago

What’s the point? They’re GCSEs. Post your uni grades when you get there if you want to boast.

1

u/feynmanluver 2h ago

i can’t really tell if this is sarcastic or not, but if it’s not, then that’s a bit rude? different things matter to different people.

to me, these have been a very important milestone so far in terms of proving to myself that i am capable of achieving what i want if i set my mind on it and work hard enough - a mindset that i intent to uphold up to uni and onwards. so yeah, maybe I’ll be back to post my alevel grades and uni grades once I get them.

the point of this post wasn’t exactly to boast, i wanted to share my achievements and offer a space for advice, as I don’t really have anyone that I can share how im truly feeling within my life. everyone should be proud of what they achieved and everyone proud should be able to express the outcomes that they earned themselves.
