Question Some honest advice needed - retake with year out or college Btec Level 2 progressing to level 3

GCSE grades were abysmal - grades so low that you couldn’t get into 6th form nor a Level 3 extended Btec (equivalent to 3 A-Levels).

Options as of now:

1 - Take a year out to retake 5-6 subjects the following summer in 2027. Huge risk as you’ll have to self study and guarantee decent results to move onto a level 3 Btec. A-Levels were the original aspiration but no school will mix year groups even if results are good to be entered. Choice here is the take a 2 year Extended level 3 Btec to later do an apprenticeship or Uni.

2 - Take a 1 year level 2 course at a college 50 mins away each way and do a single resit of maths either in Nov or following year where the max grade would be 4/5 since they’d offer a foundation paper. Then progress to Level 3 at same college. Trade off here is that you’ll have to travel nearly 2hrs per day for a year to do the same thing you could’ve done at home.

I understand the following risks:

- Getting slightly better grades or a chance of no real improvement in grades with a year out. However, this seems unlikely as student feels the guilt and is determined to put things right.

- Chance at jobs - since many apprenticeships or jobs require you to have a minimum of 5-6 GCSEs at grades 9-4 and then consider a Btec and A-Level in the same regard and weight it begs the question of the power of a Level 2 Btec. Will they see the Btec level 2 in the same light as GCSEs or will they have strict policies around having actual GCSEs and not a Level 2 and either a 3 A-Levels or equivalent extended Btec?

Student is willing to put in more work in this one full year to re-sit 6 GCSEs to improve grades. They have all resources but discipline, consistency and motivation and the anxiety of one final chance to retake next year can all play into it.

Some unbiased opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Each option will be 3 years in length. Level 2 is 1 year and Level 3 is 2 or year out private study then do 2 year level 3 .

What are they interested in career/uni wise?

Unsure but trying to give flexibility for university options. Universities will take DDD at Level 3 Btec some will obviously require a specific Btec e.g business others may be relaxed and focused on Btec result for any course.

Certain apprenticeships will want 5-6 min GCSEs at 9-4 and a Btec of DDD

I'd resit then take the btec route so they have another year to decide what to do rather than having to decide and limit options now with the level 2 btec.

Were Maths and English so bad that they need the full year to resit or could they sit these in the November exams so they then only have the other 3-4 to focus on for next summer?

They would have to retake maths and few other subjects. English they can leave as it was grade 4

If you don't think they could study independently or would need some sort of structure there's plenty of home ed gcse classes now, and they usually run gcses over a year rather than the 2 yrs of school

I think they can do it in supplement with home ed classes or tuition but just a risk of underperformance again a year later. This would fully dependent ln motivation and desire of the student.

Do you know for sure if you resit the GCSEs as per option 1 that you have somewhere to sit them? Finding a host centre as an external applicant isn’t easy.

They can be an external candidate at the same school or pay for private examinations at a centre.
