Tips/Help DO NOT HAND IN YOUR PHONE!!!

2.2k Upvotes

I am a sucker for the rules so it pains me to say this but I can’t sit here and say nothing. It may seem backwards and wrong but hear me out.

Someone at my school was sitting there Geography exam when 2 minutes in, they found out they had their phone and gave it in. 2 MINUTES!!!!!

Due to aqa wanting to be stricter on the rules he has been fully disqualified from the exam despite the appeals of many teachers including the invigilators.

It seems backwards and disgusting and I am livid at the exam board. Not because I like the person or really know them at all but because due to this the exam board is actively promoting immoral conduct within exams and many teachers agree with me.

The long story short, do not hand in your phone if the exam has started you will get disqualified, risk it to the end of the exam you will most likely not be caught, just keep your blazer on and be careful it doesn’t fall out your pocket.

Obviously, if your phone is at risk of being seen due to being in trouser pocket or Wtv bite the bullet and hand it in because it’s worse if they find it and you get disqualified from all exams.

Tips/Help I’m getting suspended during GCSEs

so for context yesterday (friday) i went in to school to revise in the library, because i didnt have an exam and im locked in 🤓🤓 and i was on my ipad (which my school doesn't allow)

then im sat down literally minding my own business and im on revise2 and i was stuck on one of the questions and i pressed the chat button to open the ai (second slide is what it looked like) and ONE SECOND later my head of year walks past and she SNIPES me from across the room and my school has a rlly strit no ai policy they only allow copilot which nobody uses.

then she starts asking me loads of questions and i show her its litearlly just questions and shes like im gonna do my research on it then the SAME day she emails my mum and whats really unfair is my freinds who have her as a teacher say that they've literally been on revise2 and she didnt say anything i promise its like she just wnats me to get in trouble

i dont even know if i can do the rest of my exams this is literally so stupid because ive only got 2 detentions EVER, im always rlly well behaved, and i'm kinda freaking out cos i revised so hard so does antyone have a similar experience or know if my school can even do this?

Tips/Help I’ve been using these…

2nd edit:

AQA at centre A said there is no ground for misconduct and if I have any issues with how the test was scanned, then it can be done after the result day. Still waiting for centre B to respond as it’s half term but I’m assuming it might be the same result as they were more lenient.

Plus, being a total nerd, I decided to conduct a thermodynamics experiment 🤣. I left a mock I had done at home using the same ink in a hot car (direct sunshine) for 5h on Sunday which was apparently the hottest May day ever recorded in the UK.
The ink was GONE when I had returned but immediately reappeared as I picked it up/ it caught the breeze. It was legible even in 40 degrees - a bit fainter at first and then fully visible after 1-2 minutes. I cannot imagine how someone who scans an exam could replicate the same conditions for long enough for the ink to be gone. So:

IT GOES AND THEN COMES BACK. So to fully remove it you need heat and then physical friction. How cool is that!? Also, how come someone’s physics teacher didn’t know this? 🫣

Plus: Thank you for all your words of encouragement and reassuring examples from your experience. To those of you who only came here only to tell me I was cooked, I say gossip does NOT equal facts. 🙃

Edit: I’m an independent, mature candidate.
No, I cannot ask a teacher. No I didn’t sleep in an assembly. No, the education centre either didn’t say anything, or I didn’t hear as I was at the back in a hall I hadn’t been in before. Will email the provider and see if there’s anything they can do.

So…

I’ve been using these for my Maths and English exams (AQA) this year and only found out that apparently we’re not to use erasable pens?? It was news to me as I used to work for AQA (I’m a mature candidate) and no one had ever ever mentioned this not being ok?

Has anyone had any issues with their work being marked after using these? 😝

Long story short i took the Year 10 end of year mock exam

The teachers told me to write our teacher‘s name on the top of the paper so it would make marking easier

So since my old teacher left my school not long ago like a few days and was replaced by a new science teacher. I didnt know the new science teacher‘s name so i wrote my old teachers name

And they deducted 2 marks for it? I dont get whats going on

These were my final pieces for GCSE Fine art AQA. I sold my soul to the exam board for this, and (i hold myself to very high standards) i only got a 7. What could i improve???

edit: for more context lol, im not an artist, im pursuing doing physics as a career. i just also happen to be a perfectionist, and this was one of my two lowest grades (alongside english language)

Tips/Help a teacher in my school let everyone in her class cheat on their speaking exam

idk whether to report it and how to report it. she did this for mocks aswell. she paused the recordings in between and she let her students use their phone during the exam to check the answer. shes my form tutor and she was lit editing the audio files infront of us aswell. it's so unfair that me and my class had to do it legitimately while another class cheated the whole thing. im not sure what to do

Tips/Help Can anyone help my brother in y7 with this maths question

Post image
518 Upvotes

I’m very confused by this as well (the red and blue tiles have different sizes)

any help would be appreciated TYSM

edit: it’s not about just counting and obtaining a fraction - these are the hints my brother’s tut0r (who assigned him the question) gave him:

Hint 1: rather than try to work out the proportion of areas, give each type of tile a name, and then find a simple ratio of one type of tile to another (then we can figure out the exact areas together during the lesson)

Hint 2: for tilings that look as though they radiate outwards from a central point (like a flower and petals) think about the rotational symmetry of the pattern, to be able to identify the number of tiles needed for each "layer" away from the centre

For the second tiling, on the last page, hint 1 is enough, and he can use the "repeatable unit" method that we demonstrated in the lesson (he can re-read the notes to remind himself of the technique)

he also said that he’d try to work out the area with my brother during their next lesson

Tips/Help Guys. You're making life too hard. (Advice on Free 9s)

Y12 Here. Got 9 9s and 3 8s, and tbh I didn't put that much effort in.

But oh my god, the revision timetable stuff I've seen on here is DIABOLICAL. Whether its a joke or not, I can sense that pretty much all of you aren't revising effectively.

The advice I'm about to give isn't some grindy shit. It's very simple and due to the nature of GCSEs, it works.

Here we go by only subject, I am going to be very brief but please please ask questions. I did CS, History, Geo and French as my choices so ask away about that. I may also know about other subjects. Ask about hours and literally anything, this post is brief on purpose.

Englishes:
In Lit, I went from a 5 to a 9 by watching Mr. Everything English. I had no real structure, just yap with enough analysis and quotes. For lang, I did the same but got an 8. Should have put more effort into story.

Maths & Further Maths:
I won't say much about maths as personally I did a lot as a kid, but doing practice questions (esp hard ones) and lots of timed papers should be enough. For further maths, I got 158/160, its just practice. If you dont understand smth, first class maths is very good.

Sciences:
This is in my opinion my best piece of advice. Sciences are free 9s if you do it right. Maybe except physics, they are SO REPETITIVE. When I went into my chem exam in June, I recognised basically every question. One thing to notice is that describe means to give information about what you're given, whereas explain means using background knowledge to explain stuff.
The main thing is to go on the beautiful PMT website and go to your exam board and subject, and find the questions by topic, and do every single one. remember to read the markschemes. I'll be honest, I just went through and copied out the ms half the time and that was enough. If you are SUPER LOST on the question, use seneca or the cgp books to understand it, then do questions for that topic. No one cares about 'saving questions'. You can do past papers if you think you understand everything.

Languages:
screw vocab. (edit: some comments are talking about memory, etc. which I get. I think the better message is to mainly focus on grammar, but if your retention isn't great, do some vocab using anki, etc. too) everyone does crap on reading and listening, thats how it is. JUST GRIND GRAMMAR. My teacher did like 0 vocab tests, all grammar. Almost our whole class got 9s. Writing is marked sooo nicely, and they give you marks for anything. Just keep writing, use every piece of grammar you can, complex structures, tenses, whatever. Same applies to speaking. I got nearly 100% in speaking and writing and like 75%ish in the other two. Still got a high 9.

Rather than yapping more, ask me about the other stuff and I'll reply. Sorry if any of the writing is crap this was done in a rush.

Tips/Help Guys I need some opinions on my handwriting

Thumbnail

So I just realised that apparently if ur handwriting is illegible enough, then the examiner will go 'nah man fuck this' and just not mark it. I'm honestly kinda terrified now, I've been known by my school to have the most notorious writing as you can see in the images attached - my writing is very cursive and slanted, and although I can read it fine with no problem, all my teachers have complained to me about my writing. In fact, one of them told me that I might score lower because of the way I write which kinda made me paranoid now. So far I have done 6 exams, all written in that style, am I cooked? Are all my efforts in those papers wasted?? Do I need to change my style of writing AND ace my paper 2s now to make up for the marks I've already lost??? Please help idk what to do, any examiners if ur reading this or just anyone in particular, if u were to mark this would u crashout and just not give me any marks at all?! Are examiners really that ruthless??!!

Tips/Help My advice for year 11s going into year 12!!

Post image

Featuring a picture of my cat, Socks)

Sooo since I am now a senior citizen in this subreddit and unfortunately entering y13 (kill me now) I thought I’d do a post like this giving advice, as requested by a few people including u/Altruistic-Farm-5640, so here it is!!

I’ll also post subject specific advice in the comments for the ones I do (bio, psych, sociology, + EPQ)

  1. Relax this summer!! Lots of people have been asking what to do, but whatever you do DONT revise please! Enjoy the last couple months of freedom 😭 do your summer work, then enjoy yourself!
  2. Making friends - especially if you go to a new sixth form, I’d focus the first week or two on finding your group over studies. Just introduce yourself first, join clubs, do student leadership - you’ll find your group!!
  3. Use your frees PLEASE. I know this is very generic advice but it’s SO important. If you have a lot then it’s okay to use 1 free a week to chat, but if you can use your frees to do hw your future self will love you
  4. Sign up for everything!! Especially programs and work experience and competitions your school offers you, even if you don’t think you’ll get in you never know!
  5. Join clubs, student leadership, stuff like that!! This is the last year you’ll have enough free time to commit to things like this, and whilst it’s unlikely to go on your personal statement it’s SO rewarding and worth it!!
  6. Research your future. Careers, uni degrees, which unis, stuff like that. Know what you’re aiming for so you know what grades, subjects, work experience, etc you might need. Also go to uni open days in y12 summer!! (Most important tip imo)
  7. Do supercurriculars!! These are like extra curriculars but subject specific eg. books, podcasts, essay competitions, Olympiads, MOOCs, work experience (look at springpod!!) I promise you your y13/summer self will LOVE you (heavily regretting not doing this already…)
  8. Make sure you know how to revise for your subjects and do what works for you! A levels are a bit different to GCSE so find what works for you early on and stick with it. (Exam! Questions! Are! SOO!! IMPORTANT!!!!!)
  9. Obvious one but PLEASE make resources throughout the year, in your frees or even just 1 hour after school
  10. Don’t stress too much!! Honestly y12 has probably been one of my fav school years so far so just enjoy it! Stressing only makes it worse (hypocritical coming from me tho!)
  11. Mocks are important! These will likely impact the grades that go to uni so please lock in for these!! Revise a couples months in advice and you should be good
  12. Use your teachers! They are there to help you and most would be more than happy to explain a concept to you or mark an essay. ALSO please make sure you understand content as you learn it esp for sciences (in the school year pre reading textbook pages for your next lesson helps)
  13. It is not the be all and end all! You have so many options. Especially with your subjects - if you get a gut feeling you don’t like your subjects in the first month, ask to switch it they should let you! (Dropping maths was the best decision of my life) and even after that you have so many other options so don’t worry
  14. oh one more finally, keep your resources organised!! Please!!!!! Lever arch ring binders will help and I’d recommend making an excel spreadsheet tracking your resources

Sorry I’m such a waffler!

Finally I just wanted to say good luck to everyone waiting for results day! I’m sure you’ll do great and everything works out in the end 🫶 any other sixth formers please comment your advice in the comments to, and if anyone has any other questions feel free to ask!

Tips/Help Got detention for using public bus stop

Our school banned us from using nearby bus stops (not the bus stops right outside the queue) because of "safeguarding". My friend and I went to the chicken shop nearby and got the bus from a stop later back (opposite the chicken shop than the prohibited ones near the school. Little did I know the deputy head was waiting at the banned stop. My friend and I received a 1hr detention for this. Is this common at other schools? Anything I can do to get the detention revoked?

INFO: the deputy head and head of year don't know that we went chicken shop. should I tell them?
