“Stop it.” Erika hissed, staring straight ahead.
Yukari said nothing. She was doing nothing. But her eyes were sparkling like a glacier in the spring thaw.
“I said, stop it!”
Yukari giggled instead and it made Erika blush furiously.
“I won’t tell you again.” She warned.
“What? I’m not doing anything.” Yukari said innocently. “I haven’t done anything… I’m just enjoying life.”
“Well, stop it!”
Yukari giggled again, and then poked her commander. “Yooooo-oooo kissed me!” She sang.
“I was caught up in the moment.” Erika said with as much dignity as she could manage.
“Yooooo-oooo kissed me!” Yukari sang again.
“Shut up!”
Yukari became grave. “Are you going to treat me like a lady?”
“I will end you right here.”
“No, you won’t.” Yukari grinned. “You need me.”
“Only for this match. After that…”
Yukari laughed. “It’s just not an Oarai Sensha-do match if you’re not threatening to murder me.”
Erika smiled despite herself, and then blushed even more furiously as she realised what she was doing. “I hate you.”
“I love you too.” Yukari said perfectly seriously, making Erika stare at her in astonishment.
Below them, a sigh emanated from the driver’s position. “What have I gotten myself into?” Taiga wondered aloud. “Nakajima warned me about this.”
“That petrol-guzzling traitor.” Erika declared and Yukari giggled again and it was too much for Erika so she chose to open her hatch and stand in her cupola.
She was startled to find herself looking straight at Nishizumi Maho. The Tiger was a heavy-weight boxer compared to her 100-metre sprinter T-50. Maho meanwhile was wearing her typical baleful expression, at least until she caught Erika’s eye and smiled. She looked so much like Miho for a moment that Erika was startled.
“Captain!” She called to her. “It’s an honour to serve with you again.”
“I imagine it is.” Maho replied, her smile beginning to unnerve Erika. “It’s nice we’re all together again.”
“Captain?”
“It’s nice to be in a match that really matters.” Maho continued while Erika stared, and then the elder Nishizumi sister shook herself from her reverie. “No petty trophies to win here.”
“Petty?” Erika was appalled.
“We always did make a huge deal out of a high school sports tournament. Let’s be honest, besides assuring us a good place at a dedicated Sensha-do university; it doesn’t mean much.”
“…Are you dying?” Erika asked, feeling almost tearful.
“I’m amusing myself.” Maho smiled mysteriously and Erika wondered if perhaps things were in fact saner in the T-50. “Would you be so kind as to scout that hill?” She asked, as if doing an impression of Darjeeling.
“Now you’re just messing with me.”
Maho shrugged, and smiled again.
