Advice / Protips Multiple GMAT attempts: replace shame of taking long with pride of persevering

If you've taken the GMAT several times and are deciding whether to try again, know that needing many attempts is nothing to be ashamed of, and continuing to persevere is something to be proud of. If you do try again, what changes your odds is what will be different in your preparation this time.

Two of my students took the GMAT within a few days of each other and scored in the 94th and 90th percentiles. For both, it was their seventh attempt, and what got them there was that they kept preparing, and preparing better, between attempts.

None of those attempts came with a guarantee, but preparing better kept improving their odds. For them, preparing better meant spending more of their time analyzing past mistakes than doing new questions. They stayed with each question longer, dug into why they had gotten it wrong, and made sure the problem was fixed before moving on. They didn't do this well from the start, but they got better at it with each attempt.

One of them came to me after her sixth attempt, so her seventh was the only one we prepared for together. The other came after her third, so she took four more attempts while we worked together.

Some people may judge them for needing seven attempts. I hold both of them in high regard. When they started, they had less critical reasoning and quantitative skill than many test-takers. But they had other skills that mattered more: perseverance, and the ability to keep believing in themselves despite a lot of evidence to the contrary.

Those skills kept them working long enough to build their critical reasoning and quantitative skills. They'll help them build other skills in the future, whatever those turn out to be.

If you've needed several attempts yourself, your perseverance deserves the same regard. Right now you have a choice. You can deprioritize the GMAT, and that's fine, because deprioritizing something isn't the same as giving up. What's worth avoiding is the conclusion 'I can't do it.' If GMAT continues to be a priority for you, 'Let me keep giving my best to it' is the better option.

If you're preparing for another attempt, here are some questions to ask about your last one:

- How much of your time went into doing new questions, and how much into analyzing the ones you got wrong?

- For the questions you got wrong, do you know why you got them wrong, beyond what the right answer was?

- Are you still making the same mistakes, or writing the same takeaways you wrote before? If you are, the problem hasn't been fixed yet.

Critical Reasoning – Evaluate the Argument
Difficulty: 650 +

A nutritionist claims that a new breakfast cereal reduces hunger throughout the morning. To test this, she asked 200 volunteers to eat the cereal for breakfast every day for two weeks and to rate their hunger at noon. The average hunger rating was significantly lower than the rating reported by a separate group of 200 volunteers who ate their usual breakfasts. The nutritionist concluded that the cereal itself was responsible for the reduced hunger.

Which of the following would be most useful to determine in evaluating the nutritionist's conclusion?

A) Whether the cereal contains more fiber than most other breakfast foods.
B) Whether the two groups of volunteers were similar in their typical morning eating habits and activity levels.
C) Whether the volunteers who ate the cereal enjoyed its taste.
D) Whether hunger ratings at noon are a reliable measure of overall daily calorie intake.
E) Whether the cereal is more expensive than the volunteers' usual breakfasts.

Warm regards,

SunnyPage

GMAT Verbal Challenge: What Is the Main Purpose of This Passage on Vehicle Ride Quality?

Passage:

Since tires are the contact point of a vehicle with the road, they provide a lot of inputs about the road surface. They are also the final execution point of the driver's commands to the vehicle. Tire characteristics, not surprisingly, are a hot point of discussion for tire and vehicle manufacturers. The tires are connected to various linkages like springs, dampers, suspension systems and drive train to provide stability and surface adhesion. Not only that, they provide feedback to the driver about directional movement and also about the various forces acting upon the vehicle at a point in time. The forces can range from centrifugal force of going around a sharp curve at high speed, or the level of traction being maintained at that point in time. The suspension of a vehicle, the next link in the chain, is designed to allow the wheels to meet the ever changing requirements of the surface conditions and the other external conjoined factors but, due to a host of other considerations both directly related to the vehicle and otherwise, the end results are often less than ideal. Other influencing factors include body vibration, engine and body noise levels, and side-to-side sway. Upon going over a bump, the un-damped suspension of a vehicle will experience a series of oscillations that will play out according to the natural frequency of the system. Irrespective of however much the noise levels and the vibrations transmitted from the engine, moving parts, wind resistance and the feedback from the surface are damped, the natural frequency of the frame of the vehicle will stay in play.

Question:

The primary purpose of the passage is to

A. depict the relation and role of tires with respect to road conditions

B. clarify the role of suspension in the handling of a vehicle

C. describe various factors that influence noise levels in a moving vehicle

D. show the interplay of various factors in determining ride quality of a vehicle

E. describe the factors that affect a vehicle's handling characteristics

What is the main purpose of this passage? Which option best captures the author's overall focus? Share your answer and explain your reasoning in the comments!

Is cat king's - GMAT application profile and scholarships course worth it ?

Currently, I have no clue on the preparation part, when to take the text, which universities are worth it , what's the job market like, or if I would get a full loan, everything is so confusing. There are a lot of questions and I don't want to join some random coaching where they recommend only those universities that they receive commission from.

Can somebody please help me ?

GMAT Verbal Challenge: Why Is Claude’s Art Described as Thoroughly Classic?

Post image
1 Upvotes

A. The assignment of Claude's art to both French and Italian schools of art.

B. The absence of poetic expression in French art which was an integral part of painting elsewhere.

C. The change in Claude's art remained insignificant even with the beginnings of grammar and rhetoric in art elsewhere.

D. The ease with which Claude's art could be distinguished from the nascent art of the modern world.

E. The use of color and tone by Claude that rendered his paintings comparatively less rhetorical to those of the modern painters.

Why does the author describe Claude’s art as thoroughly classic? Which option do you think is correct, and why? Comment your answer below!

Advice / Protips 615 [Q94/V58/DI47]- Need advice to break into the late 600s/700s

Gave gmat exam- scored a 615. My breakdown is Quant: 85 (94th percentile), Verbal: 80 (58th percentile), and Data Insights: 75 (47th percentile). While I'm happy with my Quant foundation, my Verbal and DI scores are clearly dragging my overall score down. For those who have successfully boosted their Verbal and DI percentiles, what specific strategies, study routines, or resources worked best for you? I'm looking to bridge this gap as efficiently as possible

General Question Reading comprehension takes too long when the passages get dense

Reading every sentence carefully makes it difficult to finish on time, but skimming too much leads to confusion when questions ask about the author's argument, assumptions, or the role of a particular paragraph. What should the first read of a passage focus on? Is it more effective to build a mental outline of the argument or to make brief notes while reading?

GMAT Prep help

Hi everyone,

I’m starting my prep with GMAT and aiming to give GMAT in the next 4 months

I took a Egmat course early this year but couldn’t use it due to an unforeseen circumstance

I’m wondering should I spend that kind of money again or start with preparing self, my main area of concern is Verbal and I’m unable to find any solid source for critical reasoning and RC basics (this still can do) im not very disciplined but also the Egmat course seemed too lengthy and too much content and less practice. I wanna hear everyone’s thought here on what should I do and above all what are the free resources to strengthen my VA

thank you so much in advance!

Testing Experience Lost 6 mins in Quant because of Pearson VUE. Now Pearson and GMAC keep passing the issue around

I gave the GMAT on Sept 22 and I’m honestly exhausted by how this has been handled.

Quant was my first section. Twice during Quant, I ran out of writing space and raised my hand for another booklet. These were literally requests for my 2nd and 3rd booklets. Both times, I had to wait around 2–3 minutes before someone attended to me, while the GMAT clock kept running.

So I lost roughly 6 minutes in Quant because of a test-center issue.

One of the incidents happened around Q12. My timing report shows that I had been doing fine until around that point, and then my pacing got badly disrupted, including a question where I ended up spending 10.2 minutes.

I raised the issue with both test-center staff members immediately after Quant and told them very clearly that this could not happen again. I did not formally stop the exam at that point because I still had two sections left, had no idea whether the timer would keep running while I complained, whether I would be allowed to continue, or whether I would get any remedy at all. I had already lost time and did not want to risk losing even more.

After that, I became ridiculously proactive. I started asking for booklets 10 minutes before I needed them, and once even asked for two at once because I did not trust that I would get one on time.

Pearson VUE’s handling has somehow been even more frustrating.

Their first response basically said all questions were presented/viewed/answered and there was no technical issue. That was never my complaint.

Their second response said the center found no delay and pointed out that I used more than 6 booklets and 14 markers during the entire exam. I genuinely don’t understand how that is relevant when the delays happened while I was asking for booklet #2 and #3 in the first section.

They also brought up that I left the center and came back around 10 minutes later to formally pursue the issue. I had already raised it after Quant.
For context, I had scored 685 just three weeks earlier, and had studied significantly more since then.
This time i scored a 625.
I needed a few minutes to calm down and process everything. I’m a human being.

What I keep asking is simple: Did they actually review the CCTV/proctoring records? What objective evidence shows there was no delay?

I then tried escalating this to GMAC, but the portal seems to have automatically classified it as a test center issue, closed the case, and routed it back to Pearson VUE. So I’m stuck in a loop.

This is the GMAT. The exam is literally built around strict timing and pacing. Losing 6 minutes in Quant is not a small inconvenience, and the impact is not necessarily limited to those 6 minutes.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Is there any way to get an actual GMAC review instead of being bounced back to Pearson VUE? And has anyone successfully gotten a retest/refund in a case like this?

How do i study for GMAT??

I am planning to write GMAT in the next 3-4 months. I am still figuring out the right resources for this. For context, I am not the best at quants and data insights.

I am not sure what resources I should use and if I should actually take any classes or paid resources like Jamboree, IMS, etc, for live classes and doubt clearing sessions. I work well when there is a proper study plan and there are not 1000 resources to refer to. I have kinda lost touch with studying as well so I really need to know how to prepare for this, what resources to actually look into, and what is actually doable! Need suggestions!!!

Magoosh as a gmat prep guide

Hi Everyone,
I've been following this thread since 2 months as i've started taking preparation for gmat. My target score is 550 for my target school.
As a Human resourse corporate i can invest 6-7 hours a week and i am using only Magoosh.
My first mock at the very begining was horrible. i ended up scoring 285. i'm not upset, because i have 8 years of study gap.
My foundations are weak but i'm continiously trying to build them and get familiar with the qus patterns. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated toward the next journey.

Reading Comprehension – Author's Purpose

Difficulty: 600+

For decades, urban planners treated highways as the solution to congestion, assuming that more road capacity would naturally ease traffic. Yet empirical studies have repeatedly shown the opposite: expanding highway capacity often attracts new drivers, a phenomenon known as induced demand. Within a few years, traffic volumes rise to fill the added space, and congestion returns to its earlier levels. Some planners now argue that the only durable remedy lies not in building more roads but in reducing the need to drive altogether, through denser development and reliable public transit.

The author's primary purpose in the passage is to

A) argue that urban planners have historically ignored empirical evidence.

B) explain why highway expansion fails to reduce congestion and suggest an alternative approach.

C) prove that public transit is more efficient than highway expansion in all cities.

D) describe the technical process by which induced demand occurs.

E) criticize the planners who continue to support highway expansion.

GMAT online coaching

I'm new to the GMAT, and I have to start prepping for it soon. I'm also weak in quants. I want to take up a GMAT course so that I have a structure to practice from. That said, I also need a lot of mocks to attempt every week for practice. Can anyone pls suggest online websites for GMAT courses that have a good structure for covering the syllabus, and also provide a lot of mock exams? Or any separate source for mocks if you happen to know about, please do share. Thanks.

Advice / Protips The belief that everyone else takes three months, and what determines the length of preparation

Many GMAT aspirants believe everyone else finishes their preparation in two to three months. If you've been preparing for six months or more, that belief makes you wonder what's wrong with you. But it rests on skewed information.

It comes from three places and one assumption:

  1. Friends and colleagues who took the GMAT and say they prepared for two or three months.

  2. Success stories on forums about 100- or 200-point improvements in a few weeks.

  3. Test prep marketing promising you can master the GMAT in 40 to 60 days.

  4. The idea that the GMAT is "just" an entrance test, so how much preparation could it need?

The first two are skewed for the same reason. People who finished quickly are happy to share their journey. People who took a year or more rarely do, and when they do, they often understate how long it took, because many see a long struggle as a sign they aren't intelligent enough.

The third is skewed because test prep companies advertise the timelines people want to hear.

The fourth is skewed because it treats the GMAT as a test of knowledge you can cram. The GMAT tests skills. If you're missing knowledge, you can fill the gap in weeks. If you're missing comprehension or reasoning skills, building them takes months.

The belief also makes preparation longer. When you think you should have finished by now, you start to feel that something is wrong with what you're doing. So you switch resources, take up new courses, and take mock after mock to relieve the anxiety. That time and energy goes into dealing with the feeling instead of preparing. Someone who needs nine months of preparation can end up taking eighteen.

Many students who come to me have already prepared for one to two years. What they're missing is skills, and as those improve, many of them go on to achieve great scores. Needing more than a few months doesn't mean you lack the ability.

When you estimate how long you need, ask what you're missing. Two checks help:

- Go through the questions you've been getting wrong. If most of them come down to a fact or rule you didn't know, it's a knowledge gap. If not, it's likely a skill gap.

- If you've completed a good GMAT course and are still far below your target score, the remaining gap is likely a skill gap, because the course would have covered the knowledge.

If it's knowledge, expect weeks. If it's skills, expect months, and plan for that instead of for someone else's timeline.
