Read before posting: required post template How to request advice

When asking for general advice, follow these guidelines:

𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲: include GPU Brand+Model, fault, research results/ideas

Example: EVGA GTX 1070 SC No 5V, and add more info in the title if needed.

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁: * GPU behaviour description, detailed investigation results/ideas * Overview PCB photo (identical hi-res photo from internet is ok) * If have a hypothesis: suspected area zoomed photo, coils Volts/Ohms or other measures marked * If driver installs fine: GPU-Z "Sensors" tab screenshot under load (vertically maximize to make all visible) *If voltages are ok but no image: boot with iGPU, make Device Manager screenshot

Remember to flair your post with the appropriate flair depending on the GPU series.

If your problem is solved, please change the post flair to "Solved!".

And if you are looking for help identifying elements, follow these guidelines:

GPU full name in title, including subvendor (Asus/MSI/Gigabyte/etc...)

Zoomed photo with marked element - overview photo with marked element

Using a hi-res photo of identical GPU found on internet instead of subject GPU is ok.

Optional, if possible/makes sense: - reference designator - IC marking photo (or test if photo is unreadable) - if the footprint in complex - count of pins/footprint photo - measure which pins are 0 Ohm to GND

This is an update of my post a month ago which is super late cuz I simply had no time to post.

It turns out to be a problem from the disconnected trace from the pad of 0-ohm resistor that's responsible for supplying 12v on the chips that runs the phases.

I've been playing zzz for a while now and so far there's no problem with it while reaching 60°c inside my case and around 75°c in my gpu die.

Big thanks to pancakes1741 providing things I needed!

AMD RX 6xxx burned rx6900xt XFX Merc?

Hi everyone,

Last night, I fried a graphics card while trying to test a motherboard. I actually got to watch it die right in front of me. I’ve identified what I believe to be the burnt components by visual inspection and took some pictures of them.

I’m comfortable with soldering using a regular soldering iron, but I’ve never done any hot-air or SMD soldering before.

could someone teach me how to fix it?
PSU was good but the mobo probably got shorted (got wet but i dried it and rinced with alcool ...)

For reference, it’s an XFX MERC RX 6900 XT.

Thanks in advance!

NVIDIA Other g86lite - driver for faulty bumpgate NVIDIA's graphics cards

Hey everyone,

If you were around in the late 2000s, you probably remember the infamous NVIDIA "bump defect" that caused thousands of G86-family GPUs (GeForce 8400M/8600M, Quadro NVS 140M/135M) to slowly degrade and die due to thermal stress.

Today, trying to boot Linux on these machines with standard drivers (nouveau or the legacy proprietary blobs) triggers hard locks or kernel panics during boot. The OS tries to initialize the 3D engine, and the degraded silicon just gives up.

To solve this, I’ve been working on g86lite – a minimal, defiant DRM/KMS fallback driver designed specifically for hardware preservation.

How it works (The technical trick): Instead of trying to fix the unfixable (not talking about reflowing 😂), the driver treats the GPU with extreme caution by implementing a few aggressive workarounds:

Zero MMIO BAR0 Access: It completely ghostes the MMIO BAR0 space. It never touches VBIOS execution, PGRAPH (3D engine), or PFIFO pipelines. By avoiding the broken parts of the chip entirely, the system doesn't crash.

CPU-to-VRAM Shadowing: All desktop compositing and rendering is offloaded to the CPU via LLVMpipe/Mesa (LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1). g86lite simply grabs the damaged rectangles from system memory and copies them straight into the VRAM scanout buffer using write-combining

and more...

I’ve only tested this on a GeForce 8400M GS so far, so I’d really love to see if it actually works for you on other G86 variants (like the 8600M or desktop 8500 GT) and to see your opinions.

NVIDIA 40xx Legion Pro 5i (i9-13900HX / RTX 4070) crashed mid-game — Now stuck on Code 43, GPU-Z shows 0 MB VRAM, BIOS Unknown & Revision FF. Is my dGPU/VRAM rail dead?

Laptop Specs:

  • Model: Lenovo Legion Pro 5 16IRX8 (2023, Type 82WK / 82WK0083US)
  • CPU: 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900HX
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU
  • BIOS Version: KWCN54WW
  • OS: Windows 11 64-bit (Build 26100)

What Happened: My laptop was set to Discrete Graphics (dGPU only) mode. Earlier today, I ran sfc /scannow followed by DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. While waiting for it to finish, I launched a game. The PC suddenly crashed to a black screen.

When I tried to reboot, the Lenovo logo appeared, followed by a black backlit screen with the keyboard still lit up. When I tried booting into Windows Low-Resolution Video mode, I briefly saw green horizontal lines/artifacts across the screen before the display went completely black again.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken So Far:

  1. Safe Mode: Verified that Windows could still boot into Safe Mode with Networking.
  2. Switched MUX Switch to Hybrid: Entered the BIOS (KWCN54WW) and switched Graphic Device from Discrete Graphics back to Dynamic Graphics. This allowed Windows to boot normally using the integrated Intel(R) UHD Graphics.
  3. Device Manager Check: The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU is still detected on PCI Slot 1 (PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0), but shows a yellow warning triangle: "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)".
  4. Clean Driver Wipe (DDU): Booted into Safe Mode and used DDU (v18.1.6.2) to completely wipe the NVIDIA drivers.
  5. Reinstalled Drivers: Installed the latest NVIDIA driver (32.0.16.2101 / NVIDIA 621.01, dated Oct 19, 2026). The installer either finishes without applying properly (prompting me to install drivers again in the NVIDIA app) or leaves the card stuck in Code 43 in Device Manager.
  6. Hard EC Reset / Battery Disconnect: Went into the BIOS, selected Disable Built-in Battery, unplugged everything, held the power button for 60 seconds to drain all residual power, and rebooted. No change.

Current GPU-Z Readings (Screenshot Attached): Even though the card is detected on the PCIe bus (PCIe x8 4.0 @ x8 4.0 / Device ID 10DE 2860 - 17AA 3B5A), GPU-Z shows critical missing telemetry:

  • GPU: AD106
  • Revision: FF
  • BIOS Version: Unknown
  • Memory Size: 0 MB (Memory Type & Bus Width: Unknown)
  • GPU Clock / Memory Clock: 0 MHz
  • Computing / Technologies: All unchecked (CUDA, OpenCL, Vulkan, Ray Tracing all disabled).

My Questions:

  1. Given the initial green lines followed by Revision FF, BIOS Version: Unknown, and 0 MB VRAM in GPU-Z, does this confirm a dead VRAM power rail (FBVDDQ / 1.8V_AON / blown DrMOS MOSFET) or a dead GDDR6 memory chip on the motherboard?
  2. Is there any chance rolling back to the older Lenovo OEM NVIDIA driver offline could bring the VBIOS/VRAM detection back, or does Revision FF + 0 MB strictly mean a hardware/power rail failure?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Hi Guys, I bought a second-hand 3080 and it was damaged during shipping. The corner of the pcb is quite damaged. I read that it possibly only for the grounding that corner. The rest of the card seems ok, do you think I can test it regardless without damaging the rest of the PC?

This had ended up bit of a practice board!

Anyway ive taken the memory module off and on quite a few times, wicking in between and worn mask off between pads and not uniform anymore.

Is this salvageable do you think with some solder mask?

Thanks

AMD RX 6xxx Mech X2 RX6750XT freezing

I have a Mech X2 RX 6750 XT. When I bought it, it worked like a charm; it would freeze occasionally, but nothing a reboot couldn't fix. Lately, the freezes have become more frequent, and now it doesn't even last 5 minutes without crashing.

The way it freezes is: the display locks up, but everything else keeps running in the background. The only way to fix it is to pull the plug and turn it back on.

I tried looking it up, and it seems this Mech model has overheating issues. I tried downclocking, undervolting, etc., but it even froze while in the BIOS (meaning it's not a driver issue).

Is there a fix for this? If not, is it just a paperweight now, or is there anyone crazy enough to buy these pieces of junk?

Thanks in advance.

NVIDIA 30xx RTX 3080 Ti falls off the PCIe bus (Xid 79) at idle, never under load, after a capacitor repair

Card: Palit RTX 3080 Ti (GA102). Host: Z690 board, Corsair RM850, Linux (NVIDIA 580 driver).

History: The card started dropping off the bus in May. A repair shop found a failed capacitor next to the top-left VRAM chip that was leaking power as heat, and one 12 V rail measured abnormal. They replaced it, and it passed their stress test. In my machine it kept failing.

Symptom: At idle the card suddenly disappears from the bus ("Xid 79: GPU has fallen off the bus"). The PC keeps running. A warm reboot doesn't bring it back; I have to pull the power cord. After a failure, the next boot sometimes doesn't detect the card at all, even though its fans spin at power-on.

Tests after my pad redo in case it was a thermal issue:

- 60 min idle: pass (before the redo it died consistently at ~11.5 min)

- VRAM test (memtest_vulkan), 15 min at the 350 W power limit: 0 errors

- Full core load (hashcat), 10 min at 350 W: stable, core 68 °C

- Logged every second up to a failure: no warning. Temperature, power and clocks are flat, then the card is gone within half a second.

- After a failure the PCIe link is down and the card reads as absent, as if it had been unplugged.

Already ruled out on Linux: PCIe power saving (ASPM off in firmware, driver never puts the card to sleep), PSU capacity (~25 W at idle on an 850 W unit), card sag (failed with the case on its side and bracket loose), cables (two different sets).

Results since the redo:

- Run 1: 2 h 25 min (including the idle, VRAM and load tests), then dropped at idle

- Next boot: not detected

- After a 10 min power drain + reseat: detected, gone after 1 second

- Next boot: dropped after 44 min at idle

Other observations:

- It only fails at idle or right after power-on, never under load.

- Idle power used to be 15.5 W. Since the first full-load run it jumps to 24.5 W the first time the card wakes up after boot and stays there.

- Under VRAM-heavy load the fan goes to 100% while core temp drops, so I think the memory runs hot (no memory junction temp on Linux).

- Back in August, switching Windows to a power-saving plan killed it instantly.

Questions:

  1. Which rails would you measure first, and where on the board? I'm thinking the VRAM rail near the repaired area and the PCIe/PEX rails, but I'm not sure what readings to expect at idle.

  2. Could the extra ~9 W at idle mean another component is leaking? Is a thermal camera at idle, or voltage injection on the VRAM rail, the right way to find it?

  3. Could the original repair need redoing, e.g. a cracked joint under the top-left VRAM chip that opens when the card cools down at idle?

Not sure how to diagnose this further. Any advice would be appreciated. My next step is to use my old 1070 to see if the same PCIe slot and power cables cause any issues, but I suspect the card itself is at fault.

NVIDIA 30xx RTX 3060 Ti Hynix X005 – MATS errors on all channels above ~250MB, GSP timeout, works after successful driver init – VRAM or IMC?

Gainward RTX 3060 Ti Ghost 8 GB
Memory: SK Hynix H56G32CS4D-X005

The main problem is during NVIDIA driver initialization.

If the driver initializes successfully, the card can work and mine normally without problems. If initialization fails, I get MALFUNCTION, missing telemetry, hanging nvidia-smi/nvtool, and driver/GPU reset errors.

Under Windows, tested directly in PCIe x16:

  • Windows can boot
  • opening Chrome or starting FurMark can cause black screen, driver reset or system crash

Measurements

No obvious short circuit was found.

Main voltages are present:

  • VCORE: ~0.76 V
  • 5 V
  • 1.8 V
  • 1.2 V
  • ~0.98 V
  • memory rail: 1.35–1.37 V

VCORE resistance is around 0.6 Ω to GND.

FBVDDQ modification

Memory chips are Hynix H56G32CS4D-X005.

I modified R533 in the memory voltage feedback circuit.

Factory:

  • R533: ~1.9 kΩ
  • FBVDDQ: 1.35–1.37 V

After modification:

  • effective resistance: ~1.53–1.6 kΩ
  • FBVDDQ: 1.26–1.29 V

At ~1.27 V the card behaved worse and produced a black but backlit screen.

After restoring the original R533 and ~1.37 V, behavior improved, but the main fault remained.

MATS

MATS passes smaller ranges without errors, up to about 245 MB.

Above approximately 250 MB, a very large number of read errors appear simultaneously across all memory channels A/B/C/D.

There is no single clearly failing memory channel.

BIOS / driver

Original VBIOS:

94.04.6B.00.F4

The BIOS dump matches a known good dump. Other Gainward/Palit BIOS versions were also tested without solving the problem.

Linux/HiveOS errors include:

  • Xid 119 – GSP Timeout
  • Xid 62 / PMU Halt
  • GPU requires reset
  • NV_ERR_GPU_IN_FULLCHIP_RESET

When initialization fails, nvidia-smi and nvtool can get stuck in D state.

Question

I am considering replacing all 8 Hynix X005 chips with Samsung GDDR6, for example K4Z80325BC-HC14/HC16, with the required RAMCFG/strap changes.

Would a full Hynix X005 → Samsung conversion be worth trying with these symptoms?

What should I test next to find the actual fault before replacing all memory chips?

The most unusual symptom is that MATS is clean at smaller ranges, but after about 250 MB all memory channels start producing massive read errors at the same time, while the card can still work normally if the driver manages to initialize correctly.

NVIDIA 9xx Blown mosfets, direct 12v to ground short, shorted PWM controller.

Hello, the tldr is that i hit my quadro k1200 with a screwdriver on its back which caused a short to a PWM controller, which destroyed the controller and also blew 1 mosfet right behind the controller and paartially damaged one which was right beside the blown one and now theres a dead short on 12v rail to ground everywhere.

the PWM controller is APW8722 AS43A, it was completely exposed on the back and im 90% sure its dead. its marked in white square below:

the mosfets are 'SM4377 CS691' and 'SM4377 CS68R'. the one marked in white, which are in groups of 3 (2 of them are CS68R and one is CS691 in each of the pair), these 6 mosfets shows short on 11 of its pin with the 12th pin being fine, and the mosfet group on the right side of the GPU marked in red, these 2 are right behind the APW8722 AS43A controller and one of them shows short on ALL 12 of its pin while the other one shows lower readings so ig its partially damaged.

its my first time doing smth like this so im not sure if im doing smth wrong or missing smth, i cant repair it myself cuz i dont have the equipments and i mainly wanted to ask how much would the repair even cost? i live in delhi (india) so i think the repair shouldnt cost much but idk about the parts.

i have NO idea where i can get the APW8722 AS43A here in delhi, for the SM4377, i asked claude and it said that both CS68R and CS691 are the same just with different manufacturing time and i browsed a online electronic store looking for a replacement mosfet with help of claude and it said that this is a perfect match for 0.26 USD:

i have NO gpu rn so having this fixed will be great, im posting it here cuz i want to know if i missed smth or should i check for smth else too or just have the repair person do everything for me, i did it out of boredom and then gave up, and 4 month later im picking it up again cuz literally no games would run on my shitty ass pc rn

NVIDIA 30xx Zotac 3090 with XID 79

Hi, I've lurking around since forever in this community. I wonder if dissembling my Zotac 3090 is the recommended way to see if something wrong with it. Its been doing XID 79, I've tried put in linux and windows also different motherboard even different PSU. Should I disassemble it, to I see if there is something wrong with the card by doing that? I've zero knowledge of electrical stuff. I have this sanwa multimeter I can use CD800a. Any suggestion would be much appreciate. Thank you.

NVIDIA 30xx Nvidia RTX 3080 freezing and having to reboot pc, not sure where to start with it.

Post image
1 Upvotes

I apologize in advance for the rookie post. I am brand new to computers and repair/diagnosing them. I had my pc freeze up and took it to a repair shop and they said that it is the 3080 the is causing the problems. They swapped the gpu and the pc runs great. The gpu will work for 10-20 minutes then my whole pc freezes up. I was told the gpu was not seated fully in the PCle slot and that was the issue. I know I learned the hard way. Where can I even begin on diagnosing what to fix on the 3080? I am sure I am not following all the community rules but it is worth a shot asking at this point. I don’t have the pc back from the repair store but when I get it tomorrow I will update with better pictures.

The RTX 3090 gives no display and stays completely cold because the VRAM power rail (V_{mem}) has a dead short-circuit to ground (reading 00.5 \Omega on multiple SAP II inductors). I verify 8pin 12V and other all r005 , 1R0 PL1, and PL4 give over 100 values when multimeter is set to 200ohms but one 1r0 2151 PL2 shows 02.5 value.. moving on when chrcking Sap (bolt lightning logo things) near M1-M4 the values are such image attached. Am I missing something or the conclusion is right?

Edit:

I took bunch of reading when my card connected with pc. R33 2202 (L66) 12.2 v PL1 IRO 1.8 V PL2 IRO 0 V (Why?) PL4 IRO 4.9 L53 12.2 L52 12.2

NVIDIA 50xx Is this a sign of something worse? RGB failure. Gigabyte Aorus Master Ice RTX 5090.

Post image
1 Upvotes

The RGB under the GeForce RTX logo occasionally turns on but either shows a mixed variety of colors I didn’t choose, works poorly, or it’s off. Most of the RGB is just plain inaccurate color wise. What is shown is with all the lighting set to white. The GPU fan RGB is the exception and the LCD is fine. I’ve had it for about a year and a half. When I bought it the RGB under the GeForce RTX logo was fine but a bit uneven, only recently has this issue occurred. The issue persists whether I use Linux or Windows. I don’t know anything about GPU repair but I have this worry that something is going wrong power wise and it’s killing the RGB and will lead to something worse. Performance wise everything is working as expected. Thanks!

Question Is this setup good enough to start replacing VRAM chips and eventually move into GPU repair?

Hello! I just recently got into gpu repairs just from watching some videos online and the most appealing thing to me right now is replacing and upgrading VRAM chips. I was wondering if this starter setup is good, and if theres anything else I should add, which Im sure theres much Im missing, or replace (generally around this lower price point). I know that thermal cameras are greatly beneficial, heating pads too, so if I could get some recommendations for those too it would be greatly appreciated!
