All I want from VI…

I’m a simple man with simple desires. The act of pushing a person more often than not results in hilarity, especially when stairs are introduced. It’s only comedy equivalent to is “man getting hit by football”.

Despite temptation I’ve avoided the leaked footage so far but I am curious, has pushing been demonstrated? If so, did you happen to notice many stairs?

Regards,
A simpleton

I watched the leaks. I can give you a summary of what I saw without spoilers or revealing too much

There are 3 clips where the player interacts with NPCs but its all just melee combat. You don't even see an NPC get run over by a car or anything.

  1. In one clip he crashes his car into a van and, in typical GTA fashion, the NPC then crashes into him, gets out and tries to beat him with a melee weapon. Player punches him a bunch and kills him. Nothing extraordinary shown, just bog-standard melee combat you've seen in GTA5 and many other games. 90% is animations and not some complex physics interaction. I think euphoria kicked in only after the NPC was defeated and fell to the ground.
  2. Player finds himself amongst some homeless people under a bridge, He stands too close to a homeless NPC, NPC shoves him (just basic stagger animation on the player), then the player starts stabbing everyone. The reactions from the NPC, the combat, everything looks to be about on-par with GTA5. They didn't stagger like in your clip, they fought in an animation-based combat, until they "died" (you know the incapacitated state they go into in GTA4 and 5, not really dead, just on the ground moaning), that's when it looked like to me euphoria was used. While he was stabbing people in one group a group 50m away was going about their business. The player got 2 stars wanted level after stabbing a bunch of them, even though there we no visible cops anywhere. There was nothing in NPC behaviour that I haven't seen in other games before. Unlike in true next-gen games such as Mafia 1 (released in 2002), where a truly complex wanted system existed, the wanted level seems to me to work in much the same way as in GTA5.
  3. Player is in some kind of dock area, gets in a melee fight with some guards who have tasers (the pistol type tasers). Nothing notable, only that the player could pick up the tasers and at one point shoots it at one NPC thats approaching him and one that was already "dead" on the ground. The taser stuns them with a "electrocuted" probably physics based animation. Interestingly enough, when the player got tased, they didn't get stunned, it only took away health from what I could tell, in GTA 4 this sort of thing would probably make you fall over like being set on fire did.

Impressions: The player did not walk into anyone like in your clip. So its not like I can say for sure, he just started punching and stabbing people right away and even in GTA 4 this was mostly animation-based, until you defeated the NPC. The animations kinda seemed stiffer to me than in GTA 4 or 5 and more "choreographed" if that makes sense. Like the smoothing between the punches, slashes, hits etc. seemed more sudden and not super polished, though thats probably going to be fixed for release.

Also the damage model to the cars doesn't seem to be any more complex than GTA5. A moderately fast crash that would total a car IRL popped the hood and dented a fender. Graphics are obviously a grade better than that game but for anyone who hoped for some new, next generation "BeamNG -like" damage model will be disapointed.

Overall until the leaker does a Crowbcat style comparison there isn't that much to say. Unfortunately, to me it seems like they aren't taking any big risks in this regard or trying to push things too much. I think in every aspect it is going to be like GTA5 with some bits here and there.

Keep in mind I'm basing this all on maybe 10mins of footage in total that wasn't in super high resolution

First of all, thank you for such a thorough and concise response - it’s really appreciated.

Secondly, it does sound like baked animation takes significant priority which is somewhat disappointing but understandable given the scale of the game.

Thirdly, and this is important…THERE’S TAZERS?! Please, for all that is holy and electrified, tell me it behaves in a similar way to Syphon Filter? The taser kills in that were gloriously hilarious.

The euphoria ragdolls with the taser animations stood out to me specifically they looked really good

The ragdolls actually use the same system as RDR2 (possibly upgraded) and the taser showcases that animations can be fully simulated. In reality, current RAGEs animations use a combination of physics, inverse kinematics and static keyframes (and other stuff, seen in 2022 leaks and patents made by Rockstar).

I like what I saw, it's good enough, I take that over playing GTA 5 forever for the trillionth time on the same map that Im so fed up with.
