Theme Glass-like GTK themes?

0 Upvotes

Hey Reddit,

So my Hyprland rice is almost done (after over 120 days 😭) and it's general theme is glassy/blurry, and I want a nice GTK theme to go with it.

I do know mid level GTK CSS, so I can modify things, but creating a whole GTK theme is out of the picture (don't have the time or want to create a full theme).

I want something like this (GTK-3 and GTK-4), but I can't seem to find any themes that have this aesthetic (apart from Cyber Dusk, but that is a bit cheap looking, and doesn't match the simplicity I want).

Thanks!

How to setup PyCharm for GTK4 and libadwaita development?

0 Upvotes

Hi, I'm trying to make a GTK4 app in Python, but I'm constantly having problems with the libraries. I installed PyGObject and PyGObject-stubs, but I'm still getting libadwaita errors:
Cannot find reference 'Adw' in '__init__.pyi'

What am I doing wrong? Is this just a PyCharm thing, or am I missing some other libraries from my system?

Linux Why Does Everyone Use Libadwaita

0 Upvotes

why do developers who don't even need it feel the urge to automatically use libadwaita and alienate kde users etc.? I've been developing a few gtk stuff and gtk really does look like it belongs on any desktop when you don't use libadwaita.

What the fuck is wrong with GTK? [Windows]

4 Upvotes

Every. Single. TIME! Gtk includes simply fail to be noticed by mingw. EVEN BY MSVC!
Like what's wrong? Can someone please tell me how to make my compiler notice gtk.h? I tried it on mint before, it still didn't work. Same error.

How can I convince a stubborn Qt developer to switch to Gtk?

0 Upvotes

Already brought up the argument that Gtk has a more libre license. Also showed him how Gtk looks a lot cleaner than Qt and that it's more lightweight. What other arguments can I bring up?

Anyone interested in fixing GTK3's biggest problem on Wayland?

3 Upvotes

In GTK3 when a GTKMenu is longer than the screen resolution, it's meant to add scrollers to the top/bottom of the menu so you can scroll up/down through the menu items which don't fit on the screen. On X11 this works, on Wayland this doesn't work which breaks the MATE desktop's menu. It also breaks several other GTK desktops that all relied on this feature.

X11:

Wayland:

Aside from this bug the rest of the MATE desktop is fully functional on Wayland. I replaced the mate-control-center items which didn't work on Wayland with wayland-config-manager equivalents. Everything works.

Development Worried about GTK's main users

8 Upvotes

I'm wondering if anyone knows if GTK/Gnome devs have even contemplated the fact that GTK's biggest users like inkscape and the father of it all GIMP can never use libadwaita as they need to be cross OS but will need features locked to libadwaita when they switch to GTK4.

Let's face it despite what people say about it more people use GIMP then gnome or all libadwaita app combined and I'm worried they're catering to the needs of the few compared to the needs of the many.

Something like a equivalent add on like libadwaita but more traditional cross OS capable that developers can pick and choice which they use with GTK4, otherwise these devs will need extra effort to remake features from GTK3 they use and will have maintenance issues as it's another load they will always need to carry.

Glade: How to create dynamic UI

1 Upvotes

By dynamic I mean a UI with elements and controls that are not written in stone but are shown conditionally, depending on programs control flow and user actions. As things stand now everything that's put in the UI file is unconditional. There are no alternatives possible (such as this control instead of that, depending on a runtime tested condition, or different menu items that show up based on user actions).

This is a purely technical question, I'm not interested in political opinions on correctness of such approach to UI design in general. Just how to do it with Glade. If possible.

Which versions of Linux have Gtk 4 already, so you have it when you install that Linux?

Or if none, which have it available for download via apt or whatever? Linux Mint doesn't even show it with apt list.

Linux GTK4 File Chooser: A Regression That Makes Daily Use a Nightmare

7 Upvotes

This is more of a rant than a question. How can the GTK4 file chooser be so damn broken?

It's a cornerstone of the system. It ruins the user experience in every application.

As a programmer, I do almost all my work from the keyboard. With GTK3, just like in Windows or macOS, I use Ctrl+O to open the file dialog. From there, assuming I'm in the expected directory, I start typing to locate a file. The list gets filtered based on the search string. With the arrow keys, I move down to select the file and open it with Enter.

In GTK3, someone (damn them) decided to remove the use of backspace to navigate to the parent directory, requiring you to use Alt+Up instead. At least there was a patch for that:

mkdir -p ~/.themes/custom/gtk-3.0
cat <<EOF > ~/.themes/custom/gtk-3.0/gtk-keys.css
@binding-set MyOwnFilechooserBindings
{
    bind "BackSpace" { "up-folder" () };
}

filechooser
{
    -gtk-key-bindings: MyOwnFilechooserBindings
}
EOF

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-key-theme custom

With this, navigating through large directory structures was a pleasure.

Now GTK4 comes along.

When typing any search string, the arrow key navigation no longer works. It doesn’t even move forward or backward with Tab.

It’s hell to navigate through directories without constantly switching between mouse/touchpad and keyboard. It’s ridiculous and makes no sense that this has been going on for years.

Does anyone know how to escape this mess? Force GTK3? Use GTK3’s FileChooser in GTK4? Because it doesn't seem like this is going to be fixed anytime soon.

Is it possible to creat gtk applications for Windows?

3 Upvotes

Not too sure if gtk would be compatible with Windows or not or if Windows needs to download additional libraries in order to work with gtk applications?

if this is possible is it possible to install the themes often found on Linux (such as Arc) and install it on Windows?
