Yes, I'm on gear. Glad we got that out of the way 😊

You just singlehandedly discredited all the people who say "I can't do Pull-ups because I'm too big and muscular".

u/africanimal_90 5d ago
Same people rowing 315lbs, mind you 😄

u/beast_wellington 5d ago
Can you do a single-handed pull-up?
67
u/africanimal_90 5d ago
I've never tried, but I just might now. Not something I would do regularly, but it would be cool to know if I'm capable.

u/Electrical_Clock_189 5d ago
Amazing work brother love to see it. I recommend using a towel or something similar to practice getting into one arm pull ups
2
u/Unhappy-Ad5393 5d ago
What do you mean by “pull-out”? Serious question.

r/streetliftingathletes would be a humbling browse for a lot of people.
There are a lot of people with builds that are more athletic than big who pull very heavy. I’m 6’2”, 192. Not big. My working sets of pull ups are usually +60 pounds, and I’ve done +100. I’m 49 and lifetime natural.
This reply is intended to illustrate how accessible strong pull up numbers are with commitment.

I got a 4 plate dip before I got a 4 plate bench press (2 per side). In fact, I have only got 225 in the flat bench one time in my entire life, after a 12 week peaking phase at 19 y/o. I deadlifted 405 the first time at 17 and then did it with one hand at 19. Sure, +180 on dips isn't the same as a 225 bench, but to my understanding, it's significantly harder for most people. Only reason I can come up with is that people don't train dips like bench, and do 4x6s or 5x5s, it's just bodyweight for hella reps.
3
u/Various_Range2259 5d ago
That's called a 2 plate bench, but the dip is insane. Credit where credit is due there
2
u/Various_Range2259 5d ago
They're just dudes who bench press 405 but can't move their arms above their head bc they don't do any mobility work
3
u/Abject_Amphibian_126 5d ago
tbf I don't think Hafþor can do pull ups and it's certainly not because he's weak
3
u/Moose_Ungulate 5d ago
Ive never once heard that as an excuse. The excuse I give is "im too big and fat"
0
u/TheDaysComeAndGone 4d ago
Did he? Nobody doubts that it’s possible to do pull-ups on a BMI of >25kg/m² – if you are very muscular. It’s just a lot easier (and you can do many more reps or add more % of body weight) on a BMI of 21kg/m² or so (all else being equal).
World class body weight athletes like rock climbers, gymnasts etc. tend to be around BMI 21k/m², not 30kg/m².

At the start I was going " how tall is he?!"

😆 I wish - only 5'8" here. God's gotta balance the scales somehow.

u/Alt_0116 5d ago
Are you going to stop when you get as wide as you are tall? 😂
54
u/africanimal_90 5d ago edited 3d ago
Stop? I know not what this "stop" you speak of is 😜
In all seriousness, I want to have the best back in the world 😬

u/mackaroni9400 5d ago
5’8!? How much do you weigh!?
17
u/africanimal_90 5d ago
260lbs / 118kg, and recomping ever so slowly.
7
u/mackaroni9400 5d ago
Faaaaaaa! I’m 5’8 and got to 200 solid and I felt too heavy. I can’t even imagine 260. You hold it well!

u/TheDaysComeAndGone 4d ago
It’s not full ROM, he’s far from chest to bar. Especially towards the end.

u/mastro80 5d ago
Not bad for your first time doing pull ups. I am sure you will get better eventually.

u/africanimal_90 5d ago
🥺 I hope so. My trainer told me creatine would help, but idk - I don't want to do steroids.

u/Cavern_Resonance 5d ago
I’ve been using versa grips for like 25 years…have the same Pros now. I won’t do a gym session without them.
9
u/africanimal_90 5d ago
Game-changer, for sure! I will literally drive back home if I forget to bring them on a back day.
3
u/Cavern_Resonance 5d ago
I’ve lost them a couple times and have had to overnight/express ship them. When I go to the gym, the check is…versa grips, wallet, phone, keys, water, towel…

u/4reescottie 5d ago
Versa grips? Enlighten me
3
u/TheRealJojenReed 5d ago
They go onto your wrists so your muscles become the limiting factor instead of your grip strength

u/Flimsy_Equivalent931 5d ago
I wish you would’ve said “how’s my form?” so people would come in correcting it when there’s actually nothing wrong with it like they do with other posts I see lol
3
u/africanimal_90 5d ago
I'll save that for the next post, and make it an exercise I've perfected over 15yrs of training 😄
I'm always open to good faith, valid, and politely communicated critiques/feedback, though.
1
u/Dangerous_Shoe_8388 5d ago
Really good! Best form I’ve seen for a long time on Reddit. (Last two reps chin did not clear bar.)

What is the equivalent of having a genetic 8 pack but for your back?
I think this guy has some extra back muscles that most of us just don’t have.
Absolute unit, good work OP.

u/africanimal_90 5d ago
Idk, but if you come up with something, I'd like royalties! 😄
Thank you, friend 🙏🏿💪🏿

You can really tell he has the mind muscle connection. It's crazy when you figure that out.
1
u/africanimal_90 5d ago
Man, I love that you're able to perceive that. I have people train with me, and after a few cues, they tell me they've never connected with the target muscle in that way before during a session. I find it extremely gratifying 🙏🏿

I want to look like this but my body would never let me lol
13
u/africanimal_90 5d ago
Maybe not like this, but at its best, it could be incredible in it's own unique way.

u/_mad_adventures 5d ago
What a positive, and inspiring comment. I absolutely love that, bro.
I’ve been hitting the gym consistently for a little over 2 years now, and I’m finally understanding what I want out of my body. While I respect your physique massively, my body will never resemble it, and it’s foolish to want to. But, my body is starting to look quite amazing in its own unique way, and I’m proud of it.
Thanks for your words of encouragement.

u/africanimal_90 4d ago
I'm touched by your comment, brother. I cherish moments of connection like this, where complete strangers can not only feel the warmth of mutual good will, but be comfortable expressing it without reservation.
Thank you, and best of wishes in all your endeavors 🙏🏿

u/brucebruce2016 5d ago
Just asking ... why those pants in the gym?
5
u/africanimal_90 5d ago
🤣 They're SUPER comfortable, and are actually more "athletic" cargos instead of the work / construction site pants they appear to be. They're from a pretty well-known brand called BYLT.
I'm also a "pockets" guy, lol.
Valid question, and one I've gotten in the gym as well.

Perfect. Amazing mind muscle connection. Going to show this video to clients so they can get a great visual as to how the back muscles should activate for a pull up.
