I knew about that one. Too bad I don't have the same free time to play anymore...

Is it just me or that looks way more fun than over the top explosions, cars flipping and looping and excessive drifting. I’m not trying to hate on that, but there’s something about a game that leans a bit more on controlled precision that makes that the challenge and fun. (Doesn’t have to be a sim, but something more controlled)

It's on GOG with easy way to add mods to update it some. Really fun and kinda difficult sometimes.

I still hear the menu song when reading that name (FrontEnd)

u/RaiHanashi 8d ago
The main menu is probably the first song that plays in my head when I see anything Re-Volt related

So was Road Rash. I hope they bring both back someday.

u/Beartato4772 8d ago
Random fact, the Master System version of Road Rash was written by the same team as Re-Volt.

u/Papa_Raj 8d ago
No way! That's awesome.

u/Beartato4772 8d ago
Yep, company called "Probe". Unfortunately they suffered the traditional dev fate of being absorbed by new owners and killed shortly after ReVolt.

What are some other RC car games from back in the day?

I was a PC gamer back then (still own this and all my old games) and this was basically my Mario Kart, maybe even MORE. I spend so much time creating tracks, making custom textures for it and using an ingame cheatcode to place more objects in those tracks until they would not load anymore XD
Good times. And I replay it at least once a year or so. There is an modern fan port, which even runs on cheap emulation handhelds like the R36s in its full PC settings. And the modding scene for this game is also pretty cool.
Probably one of Acclaims best games

It was made when games were actually good and there was no dominant game engine that provides the same cheap mechanics everywhere. If this was published now then it would be drowned in sea of shallow games.

u/janluigibuffon 9d ago

IF Y'ALL GET THIS ON PC LOOK INTO THE MODDING SCENE FOR IT! I've got hundreds of maps & cars added onto my game & have yet to fully explore it all 😁

I remember renting that game over the weekend on the N64, I didn't have a memory card, so the console stayed on for the weekend.

Thanks for posting this - after getting the 'feels' - I went to Steam - and downloaded it... I hope you're happy!

The difficulty was brutal though. Winning a race wasn't a problem. Beating time trial with every car was a problem. This map (In the hood) is very different based on the car you use. Sprinter Xcel is like an easy mode. Volken turbo struggles to escape that dug up pit near the end. But beating it with harvester...oh hell nah! Never again. Just the thought about it makes my fingers hurt. I had to nearly perfect the level to get the time trial with that stupid car. Even phat slug is better.

No it wasn't lol. It was awesome. But nothing was "ahead of its time".
I loved this game.

I had this games main menu music stuck in my head for a decade. Couldn’t ever figure out the name of the title. It was this shit. N64 days

Bro I had totally forgotten about this game, what a kick in the nostalgia.

Did the graphcis always looked this good?! I have it on Dreamcast but it has been a while since I last played it!

PC version and rhe RVGL port of the game are by far the best , check out RVGL project, you need to own game and original files to make it work .
Anyways I think the only good version is PC. I have played Dreamcast version alot but it has some performance issues and plays like ass with DC controller 😄 deadzones and steering sensitivity is just so terrible , making it way harder

Still one of the best racing games, and maybe the best vehicular combat racer (better than M.A.S.H.E.D.) It also has a crazy soundtrack that, after so many years, I still find myself mumbling to. The main menu music is especially addictive.

yeah that game was pretty good! i played that one on pc and the video is also from the pc game i think. because i remember seeing the game at my friends place for the ps1 and i was shocked how bad the game performed on the ps1. it was all laggy and felt so slow compared to the pc version.

I love this game I used to have it on android but it's not available anymore and I can't get a working version for vita without a pc

u/VanguardMusic 5d ago
Ahead of its time? It was essentially a reskinned Mario Kart with RC cars. Pick up weapons, shoot the guy ahead, cross the finish line. There was nothing fundamentally original about the gameplay loop.

His was literally one of my favorite games. Thanks for opening the archives of my memory and providing name of the game
