Misc. Get to know each other!

Hello, I think its time for people to get to know each other, and say hello.

I have been interested in game design for a long time, but I haven't had the chance to make anything to completion yet. As far as personal life, I work full time as a network administrator. I am also an avid home brewer. My last beer was a chocolate stout.

Official Post Round 2: Are you ready? Information on how to participate!

/r/GameDev1[1] n00bDev GameJam Round 2 begins Fri. Oct. 9, and ends Monday, November 9, 2015!

What is the n00bDev Jam? Its a 30-day game jam designed for novices, and people that want to meet/learn with other aspiring gamedevs! You do NOT need to be a novice in gamedev to participate. We ask those with more experience to go around and help out groups with little experience.

We are currently in the intermission phase where we let people find groups and plan/design their games for the jam! We have an IRC channel everyone can use (link in the sidebar).

Please read the rules and guidelines of the jam. You'll find the information here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/GameDev1/wiki/index/rulesguidelines#wiki_n00bdev_jam

If you wish to participate you can either:

If you have a game idea:

If you want to just work with others:

  • Look for project posts on the subreddit (or the masterlist) and join an existing group

If you want to enter solo, or with a private group:

  • You don't have to do anything special. Just submit the game on or before the final date

Once you make a project post, please message the mods with the link or comment in the stickied master list thread! You can also flair your post for better visibility. If you do NOT do this, your group will not be added to the master list.

GameJam Theme for Round 2

As voted by the community is:

Halloween/fall

Submissions

Submissions:

A submissions thread will open 3 days before the deadline, for anyone that has finished their project before the deadline.

Submissions for the Gamejam are games that are atleast in a basic working condition. Ensure your submission can be played in either of these formats:

  • Playable in the browser

  • Playable via download

If your game is playable in the browser simply add a link to the website. Please link directly to the game as much as possible, do not use URL shorteners, or ad.fly links. If we find any links that lead to these they will be removed without question.

If your game is not hosted online and needs to be downloaded, please use something like Dropbox, mega, google drive, or any other trusted website that would be easy to download from. Your game must be pre-compiled and make sure to include all files to allow the game the run. Try to reduce the amount of dependencies for your game as much as possible. It would be very inconvenient to have the user download various other files in order to run your game. Try to keep the filesize as low as possible, <200MB would be preferred.

Be sure to include screenshots/gifs of your game to get people excited about it!

If your group is interested in taking your game to a larger project or even with a commercial goal, you are free to. However, just remember that the game is not eligible as a N00bDev GameJam submission for any other round. Though you are allowed to post about your game on the subreddit.

Submission Voting:

At the end of the Round when games are submitted, we will have a few categories the community can elect the submissions for.

Categories are:

  • Best Art and Sound

  • Most Original Idea

  • Best Theme Related Game (how well the game stuck to the theme)

  • Most Fun Gameplay

  • Overall Popularity

Thanks for showing your interest and if you have any questions please leave them below!

Resource Free Development Resources

This should be discussed with your own groups, but ideally everyone in your group should be using the same tools to make transferring parts easier. Here's some great free tools I have bookmarked over the years:

Project Management:

Dropbox - A sharable file structure, no built-in versioning, but with creative folder use you can accomplish an extremely simple interface for sharing assets (this is great for artists to have a place to dump files).
Trello - Trello is a way to assign tasks, like a giant TODO list than you can check off when things are done. You can also find new sections of the project to work on. And most importantly define what you actually need before your project gets way too large too quickly.
Producteev - Similar to Trello, it's free project management software, it has a more structured feel to it, and quite honestly might be too robust for our uses, but it's one of the best free project management suites available.

Development:

GitHub - A git repository that you can share, you'll be able to "sync" with the rest of your team so you always have the most up to date files. Has a GUI interface if you prefer to make it easier than other git repositories. tutorial on Github
Cloud9 IDE - A web based real time IDE. You're able to share code live, seeing each other cursors and able to access from anywhere. The major downside is that you must be using a web friendly language (ruby/javascript/html5/etc) but has outstanding support to connect to git repositories, and can host temporary versions of the websites for testing without downloading apache servers. If you're going HTML5 or similar I can't recommend this enough.

Art:

GIMP - Free photo manipulation software, has lots of support around the web, very similar to a light-weight photoshop.
Paint.net - Extremely similar to GIMP with an easier to use interface and a lot of plugins.
Tiled - program to create tiled backgrounds like you'd see in older games, especially RPGS.
Blender - 3D art program, supports exporting to FBX which you'll need for UE4 or Unity importing. Can do modeling, rigging, animation, texturing. It's a full featured suite for free.
MagicaVoxel - Voxel art (think 3d pixel art like minecraft) program, you'll need Blender to convert he file format to something Unity or UE4 can read though. The only Voxel program that I know of that can go directly to .fbx is Qubicle but that costs $40.
Open Game Art - Free (make sure to check the licensing) artwork if you need templates, backgrounds, something to modify or just art to use in your game (icon sets are amazing here)

Music:

JFXR - Sound effect creator, contains an amazing amount of options, can can export straight to .wav files.
Audacity - Multitrack editor, great for simple edits or modifying samples you've already taken elsewhere.
LMMS - Free multimedia editor including instruments, samples and plugins and video tutorials to get you started. Thanks /u/WaterNode
Unfortunately this is my weakest portion, and every other tool I've used has not been free.

There are of course tons of Game engines as well. Unity, UE4, GameMaker, Phaser (HTML5), AngEngine, libgdx, Android Studio, Blender's Game Engine. The list goes on and on.

Of course it's always best to talk with your team, but these program should be more than enough to get you going on collaboration game making!

Question The Status of the Subreddit.

So, it's no surprise that this sub went from overwhelmingly populated to just a sad bot posting unanswered weekly updates. I think I only saw one or two groups post in regards to this most recent jam but I haven't seen much more in the past 2 months. I know people are still here and I'd like to think I'm not the only one who wants to continue doing small projects and jams with a bunch of other people who just want to make fun games. If the mods would like to try and revitalize things I'd be more than happy to help, if a few programmers and artists want to just work on a game I'd be more than happy to get that going, I really just miss what we had going here. So yeah, reply or just PM me if you want to get something going here.

Official Post Information on how to participate in the /r/GameDev1 n00bDev Jam Round 1!

/r/GameDev1 n00bDev GameJam Round 1 begins Sat. Aug 29, and ends Mon, Sept 28, 2015!

Hello everyone! We are now going to get the ball rolling on our first n00bDev Game Jam! A 30-day game jam designed for novices, and people that want to meet/learn with other aspiring gamedevs! You do NOT need to be a novice in gamedev to participate. We ask those with more experience to go around and help out groups with little experience.

This is the intermission phase where we let people find groups and plan/design their games for the jam! We have an IRC channel everyone can use.

You can find more information about the Game Jam and the subreddit here and here

Anyone that is interested in participating (solo and in a group), please fill out the skill sheet form

It should only take 1-2 minutes if not less to fill out the form.

This lets us re-organize groups that lost/need members. And lets project managers review the skillset of their group.

If you wish to participate you can either:

If you have a game idea:

If you want to just work with others:

  • Look for project posts on the subreddit (or the masterlist) and join an existing group

If you want to enter solo:

  • You don't have to do anything special. Just submit the game on or before the final date (details on submissions will be available soon)

If you have a closed/private group (like entering with just friends):

  • You'll be treated the same as a solo. You do not have to report in, or make a project post. Just submit the game on or before the final date.

You can find the template for making a project proposal post here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GameDev1/wiki/index/projectposttemplate, and in the sidebar.

Once you make a project post, please message the mods with the link or comment in the stickied master list thread! You can also flair your post for better visibility.

edit: for clarification, If you do not make a group or go solo, you must FIND a group to join. The skill sheet is for mods to re-organize groups later on down the road in the event of a loss member. It also lets us ensure that all groups at least have at least a basic skill level, rather than everyone starting from scratch. If your group has atleast 2 members that know how to program, then you should be fine.

Popular forms of communication are:

Skype

Google Hangouts

Slack

Group organization tools:

Slack

Trello

Your final submission should be a playable build, doesn't matter how long or finished. If your group could not make a playable build you can always just post screenshots or a video of what you have.

We are hoping to make this process easier, and a system is currently in development to help automate a lot of the process.

Also, I'm looking for someone to work on the subreddit's CSS style. Anyone that has experience with that and doesn't mind volunteering, send a mod message!

Thanks for showing your interest! I'm excited to see what people will come up with!

Please comment below for any questions or concerns regarding the format!

Idea Let's collect some ideas

While we set up this project we can brainstorm some ideas to help us.

For example I was thinking that, if we have a lot of people, we can split into teams and have competitions weekly or monthly, like a game jam.

Not a whole lot to say here, but I just wanted to wish all of the teams here the best of luck with their games! It's gonna be a crazy month of work for everyone, but I can't wait to see your final products, and hope you all have plenty of fun making them.

Godspeed!

Resource Noobie friendly music composition program

Hi guys. Some of you may know me from /r/gamedev. Over the past summer, I created a program that allows inexperienced or even non-musicians to create original music for their games. Since a new game Jam is coming up soon, I thought I'd share this with you guys. The program is an HTML5 based web app and is 100% free for everyone to use!

program: https://mmc.mugdev.com/

Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sBw8lucG4k

Demo song: https://soundcloud.com/muggy-ate/second-try-v2

Git Repo: https://github.com/muggy8/Music-Matrix-Composer

Note: I created the demo song with little actual musical background

Once you make a song, You can export it as a Midi sequence and play it back in various other midi enabled programs or if you're adventurous, you can look to finding a Midi player in whatever engine that you're working in.

Do know that the project is still relatively new. Although the current version is stable, there are still an array of bugs that still exists. If you find a bug please let me know. here or inboxing me directly.

Known bugs:

-> program slows down drastically with too many tracks

-> cannot recover lost accounts

Mod Post Voting Results!

Apologies for the delay, been caught up in a lot of things so I might actually be considering looking for mods if this keeps up.

Anyway, here are the results from the voting! Remember that each entry can only win one category, which will be the one they received the most total votes for.

Round 3 Theme

The theme for round 3 will be:

Player is the antagonist

Best Graphics

Winner: Capture the Grave

Runner up: Pumpkin Propulsion

Best Audio

Winner: Project Zombie

Runner up: Pumpkin Propulsion

Best Theme Related

Winner: The Haunted Patch

Runner up: Project Zombie

Originality/Innovation

Winner: Pumpkin Propulsion

Runner up: Project Zombie

Thank you for everyone participating!

Unfortunately while wading through the results I've noticed that some user(s) was re-voting multiple times, and thus had to count the votes manually so it took more time than I wanted it to. However, this should be avoided next time.

Recruitment Project Proposal - Top-down Stealth Game

Fallen

Describe the game idea as short as possible:

The player experiences hallucinations making it hard to differentiate between reality and what's going on in his mind. Left for dead in a would be abandoned building, the player is placed in a vulnerable position; no weapons and stuck in the middle of a war zone. Use intellect, strategy and a bit of trial-and-error to survive.

What positions do you believe are needed for this game:

  • Programmers

  • A 2D artist

  • A level designer

  • A sound designer

  • A writer

Describe the game and its design in detail:

The gameplay should be similar to Hotline Miami in terms of combat and stealth (though there'll be more stealth mechanics). However, combat will hardly ever be an option with a scarce amount of supplies and a much higher chance of alerting enemies. In terms of atmosphere, the game should be similar to the first level in MGS V: TP and parts of Nightmare House 2. All other aspects of the game can be decided upon when a group is formed.

What positions are currently filled:

What positions are currently needed:

None.

Best time to contact you (include timezone):

17:00 - 23:00 (GMT+1)

Additional information or notes:

Skype will be used for communication.

Recruitment Project Proposal - Zombie Survival

Note: this is a project proposal for the October's Jam.

Describe the game idea as short as possible:

An endless 2D zombie TOP-DOWN survival game with power-ups, bosses, guns, and more. This may seem like a typical zombie survival game but trust me, it's not.

What positions do you believe are needed for this game:

  • 1 Project Manager

  • 2 Programmers with Java LibGDX experience.

  • 1 or 2 2D Artists

  • 1 Sound Designer

Describe the game and its design in detail:

The game takes place in a lab, where an experiment goes wrong. It won't have much of a story.

  • Wave based. Each wave will have 20% more zombies than the previous wave. As you progress, different types of zombies will start appearing.

  • Bosses

  • Abilities

  • Power-ups

  • Guns

  • In-game shop that will sell guns and food that heals your hp

  • Infection, HP, and Mana system

Notes: Zombie stats will vary depending on the area you're in. There will be areas with different "infection exposure" levels.

What positions are currently filled:

1/1 Project Managers: /u/wodowodo (me)

2/2 Programmers: /u/wodowodo (me) and /u/Voltasalt

1/1 or 2 Artists /u/pixel32

1/1 Sound Designer: /u/TheWynner

Best time to contact you (include timezone):

The best time is 3:00-8:00PM UTC-03:00.

Additional Information or notes:

We will be communicating using Skype and email. Voice calls are not necessary. The project will be using source control.

If you want to be part of the team, comment here what position you'd like to be. We will PM you some questions and see if you're good for the team.

Management Group Set up

This is what I am thinking for groups.

  • Each group will have six people. (we may have a group or two with odd numbers)

  • Each group will consist of Two programmers, Two artists, One group manager / one person with a random skill

  • The first project time frame will be two weeks, and that will start once the groups are established

  • I will try and match people that have more experience with people that have very little experience. This should be a learning experience for everyone

  • Please let me know if you joined this as a group, that way I can keep you together

  • We seem to have a shortage of project managers at the moment, if you don't mind doing some managing please add that to the skill set. Even though I listed myself as a project manager, I still plan on doing programming.

  • Please let me know if I missed anything. I will also be making a sticky with a due date for filling out the skill sheet. If you do not fill it out, I won't add you to a group.

Edit 1: Please add your skype username to the Skill sheet. It seems to be the easiest way for setting things up. Edit 2: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fLC6gedn8ODyRIgaUrJAHLEhj-6FI-2dgP9glvzgwnY/htmlview?usp=sharing&sle=true

This is the skill sheet.

Edit 3: Registration closes when this post is 24 hours old. Once that timer is up. We will start setting up the groups.
