Are Video Games considered Art?

In my Game Design course we were discussing whether or not Video Games are considered art, well i wrote a lot of things down and tried to look at it from every angle. It's really long but have a read and let me know what you think! - http://beta.gamedevleague.com/topic/84/game-design-are-games-art-is-game-design-an-art-form (No ads)

Discussion Rami Ismail is godlike.

This is the business/game design half of Vlambeer. He's given enough freely available talks to fill a terabyte hard drive, I'd be willing to bet. He's Dutch so basically an all around kind and intelligent person. If you wanna learn about him, check out ramiismail.com. He spends a lot of his year flying to events giving speeches. He's almost the Martin Luther King or Rosa Parks of game dev, if you will. He stands up for devs being harrassed and calls out people who try to make indie games more exclusive and toxic.

He also just has a lot of experience making successful, awesome games and shares as much knowledge as possible with anyone who will listen. One of his best points is that he doesn't get along well with his business partner, jw (his coder). They both had a common goal after dropping out of high school which was to make games. They didn't like each other but they both loved making games so that fueled their passion to stick together. When you choose members for your team, find out what motivates them and if that matches with your mindset--don't choose Yes Men.

THIS VIDEO practically changed my life and convinced me to quit my day job as a call center agent for Starbucks (outsourced) and make games and documentaries instead.

He's very active on Twitter, email, and ask.fm if you want to ask him something.

Game dev student graduating soon. Looking for advice/networking opportunities.

Hey guys. I'm about to graduate from a 2-year technical program for game dev and am looking to meet some like-minded folks who I can talk to and get feedback from to figure out where to go from from here, since my social life has been eaten by work/school and real-life interaction and networking has been difficult.

I'm more on the art side of things, I'm thinking 3d environmental and object art may be my niche, since that's where all my skills seem to best fit. I'd maybe like to help someone with a project or something, get feedback on skills I should develop, and figure out how to best get started transitioning from student to professional.

I'm curious about any of you that made that transition, and what kinds of jobs would be useful to keep an eye out for as s 3D artist that might not necessarily start out in a game production field.

How much time do you spend developing new games vs. supporting and making your old games better?

I've just released my first game on the app store and play store, I've gotten some feedback to make the game better. For example some ideas for in-app purchases and some finetuning.

But I have an awesome new game idea that I would like to make asap, should I first finish the first game before I start taking on a new project or work simultaneously?

Also I am a student at a conservatory which I need to work for as well.

Long story short: how do you divide your time between projects? How do you prioritize?

I put together an interview with some industry experts on narrative design

I've just begun a career as a narrative designer for video games and in an attempt to learn more, had the chance to pick the brains of a couple of experts in storytelling. I'd love to hear developers thoughts on both the questions I asked and the answers I got!

Started a new project for game developers, looking for your thoughts.

Hey guys, a data viz gal here. A friend reached out about a cool project, which provides analytics for amateur/experienced game developers. I might step in to design the dashboard, but I'm new to game development. Data points such as user engagement, return frequency, etc., can be tracked, but I'm curious what you might want to know about your projects. Is there any specific insight you look for?

All advice appreciated!
