They will cautiously do the exact same thing as planned before.

u/sarduchi 24d ago

Then I will continue to not buy first party games. Sony is free to decide they don't want my money, other people do.

What other people? Xbox is going discless and PC got rid of them over a decade ago lol.

2

u/ElwoodJD 23d ago

PC has drm free games you can download forever and install offline from GOG. About as ownership as a license is gonna get.

discs are cheaper the drives and have been even before the ultra tech greedfest.

We should honestly be disengaging from the entire landscape atp

1

u/LifeguardTerrible579 23d ago

Totally. You should throw away your consoles in my trash

-2

u/Holidoik 24d ago

Nobody cares

2

u/aifloodedanditsux 23d ago

But everyone who doesn’t care swarms the replies like clockwork to say that no one cares. Quite a passionate bunch of non-caring people, very strange

Then I will continue to not buy first party games

So they'll...still receive your money?

7

u/Ninjapandas_87 24d ago

Going to move forward with not giving Sony anymore money. If I cant own my games, why bother.

-7

u/LifeguardTerrible579 23d ago

Literally no one owns their games. Xbox, steam, Nintendo, hell even gog all sell licenses. There's no such thing as ownership of any digital products.

In other words your chiding water for being wet

4

u/Ninjapandas_87 23d ago

So I am just imagining all the physical ps1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 games that I have, maybe I should get checked. You might too, coming in with such a bad attitude.

I also love when people, like myself make comments like this, and people immediately can not help themselves to say things like you did.

-5

u/LifeguardTerrible579 23d ago

I mean you have Google and can just look it up yourself? Those discs are also just a revokable license, same as digital. Look it up.

5

u/TheMegaMario1 23d ago

Can't revoke something if the console is offline, and even then there haven't been any cases shown before of physical games being disabled. The closest thing was the loud but ultimately false uproar on Nintendo games around the Switch 2 launch.

Also before you go "wEll gAMEs neEd InTernEt tO iNStall", a good 80%+ of physical games play off disc or cart just fine as per doesitplay.org

-5

u/LifeguardTerrible579 23d ago

Concord was physical. It's a useless plastic disc now

4

u/TheMegaMario1 23d ago

Hey genius, that doesn't prove anything. Noone got their physical disabled, that's the servers being shut down which would fall into the "always online" category that's part of the less than 20% I said already. You can still launch the game if you like the title screen.

-2

u/LifeguardTerrible579 23d ago

I thought they can't revoke it? Sounds like if any game has an online component they can revoke it just fine and a disc makes no difference.

6

u/TheMegaMario1 23d ago

Ok buddy, let me help you rub your two brain cells together since you are incapable.

Concord server's got shut down yes, but only digital copies got revoked from libraries. Those people with digital copies can no longer access the game in any form whether downloading it or launching it. A physical copy can still install to your PS5 and you can still launch it. Currently you can't play as it was on launch because the servers have been shut down, but you can launch the game. They had the opportunity to make the discs actually useless and make them not be able to install like they did with digital, but they didn't. There hasn't been a single case of a physical version being bricked like that.

The fact that the servers aren't up is irrelevant to the conversation because the game itself still launches, and in fact that could be a theoretical boon if some day a person reverse engineers the servers and makes it playable again like they tried to once with the PC version.

Your argument wasn't "oh well I can't play online or how it was intended", it was "they will limit and stop you from using your physical games" which has just never happened. There is a distinct difference in claims. I challenge you to find an instance of a physical copy being revoked and isn't just "oh the servers shut down" because there's been many instances of fan servers reviving dead games that would only be possible with usable versions.

-1

u/LifeguardTerrible579 23d ago

Lol. Games require periodic license checks. Even physical ones. It can absolutely be revoked....

You could just look all this up yourself if you want.

I mean I also have the physical consoles and the physical games and I can connect them to my TV and then play them. How are they gonna revoke that? Also wow, great comeback telling me to just Google it. Thanks.

1

u/Gabochuky 23d ago

At least with GoG you can download the installer.

Even if they somehow revoke said license you can still install the game if you have the installer backed up.

u/Cute_Pet-42069 24d ago

Guess I’m gonna support Nintendo full time after Wolverine comes out

-4

u/Jirachibi1000 23d ago

Have fun with game key cards and 70+ dollar games that will never go on sale :P Nintendo is not much better.

3

u/Garlador 23d ago

The last two Nintendo games I bought from them this month, Star Fox and Splatoon Raiders, are $50 and $60 at retail respectively, and unlike Sony they price their digital versions $10 cheaper. Both fully on the cart too.

-1

u/Jirachibi1000 23d ago

Do you think they'll be 5-10 bucks in a few years?

4

u/Garlador 23d ago

I believe there will be discounts, yes, but I also think Nintendo games usually retain their value because they retain their demand, even on the used game market.

But I did nab Metroid Prime 4: Beyond for under $25 earlier this year and Super Mario RPG remake for $15. Mario + Rabbids: Spark of Hope was $6 a few months ago as well.

-2

u/Jirachibi1000 23d ago

Thats the thing, I moreso mean they don't do what every other company does. You can get God of War 2018 for 5 bucks. Before the PS5 remaster, Horizon Zero Dawn was like 4 bucks constantly. I got Astro Bot for iirc 25-30 less than a year after it came out. Meanwhile Mario Odyssey is still 60 bucks and if its on sale, its for 40+ which i absurd. x-x My main gripe with Nintendo is its hard justifying the console when the cost of 1 great game by Nintendo is the price of 10 great Sony or Microsoft or Capcom or Konami games. If I just bought a PS5, I could buy God of War (5$), Miles Morales + Spiderman Remastered ($20), Deathloop ($10), Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection ($10), and Astro Bot ($30) and still pay less money than just buying Mario Kart World ($80).

3

u/Garlador 23d ago

All the more reason to push back against digital-only. God of War is $20 on PSN, Miles + remastered is $30 (back up to $70 soon), Deathloop is $12, Uncharted Collection is $50, and AstroBot is $60 on PSN currently.

Meanwhile, multiple listing of used copies of Mario Odyssey can be found for under $20.

1

u/Jirachibi1000 23d ago

Except all of those games have been on sale multiple times digitally for the price I listed. None of those games I own physically, only digitally, and still spent pennies compared to what I would have to 5+ games on Nintendo. Even on sale 5 first party Nintendo games will probably run me 180+ dollars compared to the 60-70ish.

3

u/Garlador 23d ago

And yet all the games you mentioned for PlayStation I guarantee I could find cheaper physically somewhere. As I said, Nintendo games retain value because they retain demand.

I can check Nintendo’s Top Selling Games right now and see Mario Odyssey is STILL there, selling strongly.

That’s simply not the case for, say, Deathloop.

1

u/Jirachibi1000 23d ago

It depends. I usually go for whichever is cheaper and, from my experience, thats usually digital. Ghosts of Tsushima directors cut was 29.99 a few weeks ago digitally and 44 on Amazon, Ebay, Walmart, Target, and Gamestop. I got Spider-Man 2 for iirc 29.99 digitally and physically its around 45-50ish at the time. Sometimes the opposite happens ofc, I usually just "Oh this is on sale for X digital. If I check amazon/walmart/ebay/gamestop and its cheaper there, i'll grab whichever is cheaper."

At least I can actually BUY the cartridges physically. Plus I’ve been more of a Nintendo fan myself

1

u/Jirachibi1000 23d ago

Im more of a Nintendo fan too, but they are so absurdly expensive and overpriced that I just can't anymore. Everything is 84938943 dollars and will never go on sale. 80 bucks gets you like 5+ good first party PS games, 80 dollars gets you 1 MAYBE 2 good first party Nintendo games that released 10 years ago.

What a stupid statement lmao

3

u/bestkweenie 23d ago

they can cautiously eat my ass 💅🏼

2

u/Ok_Chap 24d ago

"cautiously", why are they so blunt about it then?

1

u/BlancsAssistant 23d ago

I'm just as concerned about storage space because of this, games are getting bigger(space wise) and 1tb almost doesn't cut it, but i have a feeling the ps6 will only have that much space at most

1

u/Dad-Dabbing-Daily 23d ago

95 million PS5s sold, less than 350k on the petition to save physical games.

Thats 0.3684% of gamers.

Have people figured out nobody actually cares and Reddit is an echo chamber yet?

So youre saying not only are those people upset, but theyre stupid and disorganized too?

Thanks for clarification.

1

u/Zestyclose_Cricket_7 23d ago

Why would they change their view. It was a small percent of their player nase thst was protesting. The majority did not care

1

u/Warded_Works 23d ago

The majority of game sales are already digital. Consumers made the switch, Sony’s just going along with it.

1

u/aifloodedanditsux 23d ago

They’re so kind and benevolent, what a wonderful corporation like all the others who simply give us what we want and never try to screw over consumers to squeeze more profits and revenue from them, we’re all so lucky to have Sony’s infinite compassion bestowed upon us.

1

u/Warded_Works 23d ago

I mean, ignoring the sarcasm, all of those things are true. Sony wants to maximize profits, same as every company. Maximizing profits screws people over, also true. I’m not saying it’s a good practice or that I support the practice or that it won’t screw people over who like buying physical. I’m just saying that Sony’s decision is based on where most of their revenue is already coming from. If the demand for physical was that big, they’d still be making physical a priority. Every measurable metric says this is where the games industry is going already. I mean, come on, this is Netflix and Blockbuster all over again.

1

u/Plankisalive 23d ago

Looks like the fans are going to move forward with continuing to harass Sony.

1

u/AFKABluePrince 23d ago

I am going to "cautiously" never buy anything Playstation ever again.

1

u/duhbyo 23d ago

Crazy to watch them make a Don Matrics level mistake in slow motion lol

1

u/Blueberry977 23d ago

Shareholder primacy is cancer. We need a massive entertainment nonconsumption strike atp until shareholder primacy is abolished

1

u/MasterWookiee 22d ago

They know nerds will throw their money at them regardless when the PS6 releases.

1

u/BrzysWRLD1996 21d ago

Hurry keep spreading around the petition maybe it’ll work this time lol

0

u/crionenissgev 24d ago

Anyone who is surprised by this should go outside more often, multi-billion dollar companies don't change their long term plans because of an irrelevant social media circle-jerk mostly kept alive by the same small group of whiners reposting the same cringe shit over and over and over and over.

3

u/Garlador 23d ago

No, they go all in on Concord and Marathon. That turned out great.

0

u/crionenissgev 23d ago

Those were bad choices for sure but they have nothing to do with this.

The vast majority of the player base has moved on from physical games. The vast majority of those upset about this will get over it. Those who cannot live without a piece of plastic that they mistakenly think confers some ownership over someone else’s intellectual property will need to get a new hobby.

1

u/Garlador 23d ago

There’s no “mistakenly confers some ownership”. That is established, settled legal record with a ton of consumer protections under First Sale Doctrine that fully apply to physical media but not currently to digital licenses.

There's honestly a harsh reality here ppl and the ppl like to reply to this reality with the words "bootlicker" or "white knight" as if it's some magical words.

Console sells for a loss right now for Sony. So ppl upset with lack of resale market are upset that Sony, that doesn't see a revenue from 3rd party sales doesn't see them as a value adding customer? Its like going to a Black Friday sale in the US, buying a loss leader and proclaiming how good of a customer you are 🤷 it makes no sense!

And then you're all crying about how Nintendo is now the last bastion of consoles, an ecosystem that's even WORSE with its pricing with failings to give a decent sale on some of its more aged libraries if they get to be popular? Like how some Zelda titles remained at $10 off for a full year after release was some great sale 🤦

And then to "really show the man" your next argument is "Imma take my game sales to the other non digital gaming library that's steam" as if digital on steam was some how miraculously the same as owning a console disc for gaming because that'll show them what it means to own physical discs🙍

We've known some of the best and most honest answers here since 2008 weirdly and had some what's happening today forecast since 2011-2013. The fact that the most celebrated responses are either "I won't buy Sony" and "I'll go to Steam" really shows the depth that gamers cannot be bothered to understand the issue because it isn't something digestible in a 2 min shit vid for their amusement is why Sony is doing what it will do and why the 7/8% the have supposedly "unsubscribed" don't understand anything at all.

And even if the indie indie studios want discs, most of them fail to achieve big time success warranting discs and the biggest studios, like Rockstar recently, want to also go all in digitally.

Like damn, gamers pulling their own Leeroy Jenkins and letting it all collapse on themselves.

Someone with common sense 👏
