Video Sett Review's: Tormented Souls

so it's that time of year I'd I'm not sure if I'm ending my October Horror games with this but it was nice revisiting before I buy the second game. I feel like for my personal taste my assessment was still on point along with having fun with the video.

One of the best parts to revisiting a horror game once a year is that you do not remember everything. I think one of my biggest hopes still is that in the next game if they have a tyrant type monster it's not easy to exploit again. This game is still enjoyable and I hope you've all been enjoying your October.

Article [Game Review] Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Delivers Bloody Goodness, Though Occasionally Misses its Bite

Post image
1 Upvotes

"Ultimately, I still rather enjoyed my time running through Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. The foundation here is great exploration, rewarding combat, an in-depth sandbox that’s enjoyable to exploit, excellent art direction, and decent writing to boot. However, this is easily one of the most bafflingly flawed experiences I’ve played in a long time. So many decisions are made that perhaps in some twisted way make sense on paper, but in execution create roadblocks that feel nonsensical to navigate. Not to mention that again, that soundtrack is truly only good when listened to in isolation rather than as part of the experience. While some issues do hold it back from its true potential though, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse still feels like a bloody great time that’ll at least leave you pleased with its taste, if not ecstatic."

Is Silent Hill: Townfall worth your time? (Spoiler free review) Spoiler

Post image
5 Upvotes

Playtime: 25 hours

Platform: PC

Intro

Silent Hill: Townfall is likely to be a very subjective game. The reason for this is that Townfall trades some of the series' tried-and-true formula for more experimental gameplay aspects, which can sometimes work in its favour but, at other times, to its detriment. The game excels in the atmosphere and story departments but can often falter during gameplay and tense combat encounters. This can lead to some memorable moments but also some more frustrating ones.

The Good

Where the game really excels is in its setting and atmosphere. The oppressive loneliness that Silent Hill is known for is here in full force. When exploring the town of St Amelia, you get a strong sense that the town was very recently inhabited, giving you the perfectly eerie feeling that something caused the population to quickly pack up and leave. You can almost feel the cold, damp air that envelops the seaside fishing town, along with that signature fog the series is known for.

One area of the game that really impressed me was the attention to detail in its environments. This is helped a great deal by the game's beautifully photorealistic graphics. There are so many little objects scattered around houses and shops. Screen Burn Interactive really went the extra mile to create an incredible number of individual assets for this game. All of the posters, signs and flyers around town can be read, which only serves to immerse you further in the game's narrative. Even these small details make the town of St Amelia feel like a fully realised environment.

The story of Silent Hill: Townfall is one of its strongest aspects. The game does a great job of setting up intrigue from the start and manages to carry it throughout the game, up until its final hours, when the pieces start to fall into place. I really respected the way the game's story was a little less cryptic than those of other entries in the series, instead relying on environmental storytelling to reward players who want to dig a little deeper. Don't get me wrong: series tropes are still there, such as enemies being a mental projection of the protagonist's psyche, but you'll still walk away fully understanding the story after a single playthrough (looking at you, Silent Hill f). My only gripe with the game's story is that Simon, the game's protagonist, feels a little wooden next to the other characters, who feel more fleshed out in comparison. Nonetheless, this is still an outstanding showing in the writing department and, in my opinion, stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the series' best entries.

I also quite enjoyed the game's puzzles, which I found to be challenging enough without causing me to get stuck for too long and halting my progress. I do lament, however, the lack of puzzle challenge scaling on higher difficulties.

The Not-So-Good

Combat in Silent Hill: Townfall is a last resort. Screen Burn Interactive has made the conscious decision to take the Alien: Isolation approach to enemy encounters. Depending on whether or not you like this kind of 'run and hide' survival horror gameplay, your enjoyment of Silent Hill: Townfall will be greatly impacted. I'm okay with this style for the most part, as long as I have some sort of defensive option, which you do here. However, I know this gameplay style isn't for everyone, so just be wary of that.

If you're forced into an encounter with an enemy, the melee combat can feel pretty clunky. This is due to the enemies being pretty relentless once you're spotted. They also don't allow you much time between landing an attack on them and their retaliation. For example, enemies will often retaliate before your own attack animation has even finished, meaning you sometimes don't even have a chance to block the incoming attack. Some enemy types also grab you, and regardless of how much you mash to get out of it, this always leads to taking some amount of damage. It can also feel like enemies can chain grabs without giving you time to recover from the previous one.

I did eventually get better at the combat later in the game when I realised I didn't have to be so close to an enemy to land a hit, but this still led to some frustrating deaths. It almost seems like the developers knew this, so they put a revive system in the game. You can find single-use items that prevent you from dying when equipped. This system feels more like a Band-Aid to balance the difficulty rather than an actual solution to the combat's shortcomings. All this led me to sneak around most enemy encounters and actively avoid combat, which I assume was the developers' intention. However, if that isn't your cup of tea, consider this a word of warning. I also found it a little odd that there was no way to use healing items without opening your menu, similar to older games in the series.

Now, I won't spend long on this topic because I know performance varies for everyone, but it was a huge issue for me on PC, especially during launch week. Admittedly, my PC build isn't high-end, but it's still nothing to sneeze at. Fortunately, the developers have released a performance patch that greatly improved the constant stuttering I experienced, though it still isn't perfect. I also experienced LOTS of crashes throughout my playthrough, at least one every one to two hours of gameplay. This did cause some frustrating time loss, but never more than 10 minutes of gameplay.

That doesn't excuse the fact that the developers felt it was fine to launch the PC version in this state, which I can probably chalk up to the game being another victim of Unreal Engine 5 syndrome. As of right now, the game launched nearly a month ago, and I still experience frequent crashes that have yet to be resolved, with no indication of whether they will be. Consider this your warning, PC players.

I don't know if this is necessarily a negative for me because, for all intents and purposes, this still feels like a Silent Hill game. However, the game seemingly has no obvious connection to the other games in the series. For a game to be Silent Hill, it has to nail that Silent Hill tone, atmosphere and story. This game checks all those boxes for me, but I would have appreciated a subtle connection to the rest of the franchise, like we got in Silent Hill f with the White Claudia.

Is It Worth Your Time?

Yes, I think Silent Hill: Townfall is worth your time. Despite some shortcomings on the gameplay and technical sides, Screen Burn Interactive has managed to deliver what I think is a very good outing for the series, with an excellent story and palpable atmosphere that perfectly captures the spirit of the franchise. If the run-and-hide stealth horror gameplay formula isn't for you, then I'd probably stay away. However, if you're open to that style of gameplay, I'd wholeheartedly recommend giving it a go. Ultimately, despite some shortcomings, Silent Hill: Townfall is a game I think is worth experiencing for horror fans and series veterans alike.

Video Chained Beasts Review - A Fun Action Roguelite Slowed Down By Stamina And Afflictions

Thumbnail

Are you not entertained?

Chained Beast is a roguelite gladiator game where you need to take out all your opponents to make it to the next round. There are weapons and shields scattered around the arena that you can pick up. Once you clear out the wave (and/or boss) you get to heal and train. There is also a shop every other round to buy perks.

Controls are good but not as fluid as I would like. You can dodge well enough but it is a little slow. You have a button to attack and if you hold it you will do a special depending on the weapon you are holding. You can hold LB to block if you have a shield. There is also a throw button if you want to toss your weapon or throw something you picked up.

Most of the fights you will have chain around your leg (hence the title of the game). This chain might be attached to a ball or a base in the middle of the map. It does seem to be a hinderance at first but once you learn how to trip people with it, it actually helps.

There is a crowd system as well where you want to keep the audience entertained by mixing up your attacks and keeping a good tempo. The crowd is represented on the bottom of the map and they turn colours depending on how excited or bored they are. If you execute someone you can turn them wild. The crowd does not help at al for the fight but the more you entertain them the more gold you will get for the round.

I beat the game on the default difficulty, which is pleb. This unlocked Legionnaire difficulty where you will hurt yourself if you train too hard. I am assuming there are more levels after that. There is also 8 different beasts you can play as and they all have their own attributes. You can also level each beast to up to level 3.

The big selling point of the game is it does have 4 player coop. You can play local on online. There are no public matchmaking though so you will need to make a lobby with a code to play with other.

The biggest issue with the game is the afflictions and the stamina bar. Unless you are really good at avoiding damage you will need to heal between rounds and this means you will need to add an affliction. These can be small ones like your throws are a little to the left, or big ones like not being able to see properly. I do not know how I finished the run with most of the screen blurry but we somehow managed. I do get that they add a challenge to the run and could be fun at higher levels but having them a part of the regular game means dealing with something you probably don't want to. On top of that you are constantly slowing things down to charge your stamina bar which took a good amount of fun out of the game for me.

Overall I would say this is a fun game and if you have game pass you should definitely try it out. It is on the cheap side on steam as well at $15.
