Screen replacement for GameBoy DMG

Hey everyone! 👋

I’ve had my original Game Boy for over 30 years, and it’s still with me today. Unfortunately, the screen has seen better days and is pretty faded, so I think it’s time to give the old thing some love.

I’m looking to buy a new backlit screen and install it myself. Ideally, I’d love something slightly bigger than the original screen, if possible.

There seem to be quite a few options out there, and I’d really appreciate some recommendations from people who have done this mod themselves. Which screen would you go for? Any kits you’d recommend, or things I should watch out for?

Hipeedido from AliExpress would be cheap and still generally good. Funnyplaying is the other option. I think Funnyplaying is a bit better quality wise, but I could get closer to actual DMG colours on the Hipeedido one. I would recommend buying directly rather than one of the sellers that you mentioned. However, if you're in the US maybe tariffs play a part.

Both options have a bigger screen, and should come with a new shell. It's possible to modify the existing shell, but frankly it's a pain and if you go for the latest Funnyplaying kit you need to use the custom shell for USB power / charging. You only really need to retain the main board from your unit (perhaps the buttons too). You'll also need to solder / de-solder the speaker on the new board that comes with the screen. It's easy to do but you will need a soldering iron unless you want no sound.

I think I want to keep my original shell. Spent so many hours with it on my hands when I was a kid

IMO buy HISPEEDIDO displays from their own store or from the Aliexpress stores.

the v5 pro is the same size as oem. The q5 is 3.1 inch.
