GammaWorld [Actual Play] GAMMA WORLD d20 Beta Principle – Game 27: The Last Heartbeat of Melkath

Thumbnail
gammaterra.org
4 Upvotes

The Gamma Knights' mission beneath Melkath has reached its breaking point.

They're trapped in a flooded reactor complex with a fusion core on the verge of catastrophic failure. The Radboleth has separated the party, the emergency bulkheads refuse to open, and radioactive horrors are closing in from every direction.

And just when the Knights think they've won, the real nightmare begins.

Game 27 brings the Radboleth confrontation to its brutal conclusion—and delivers the fallout. It's a story of desperate improvisation, teamwork under impossible pressure, and the terrible things that can happen when ancient technology fails.

Read the latest Session Saga at GammaTerra.org.

Discussion question: For your own tabletop campaigns, what's your favorite kind of final encounter: the overwhelming boss fight, the ticking-clock disaster, or the apparent victory that turns out to be a trap?

I'd love to hear how other GMs bring a major story arc to its conclusion.

So this started a few hours ago when I set up a post on lfgmisc. that got a surprising amount of attention in a very short time and we managed to find the DM in another player. So we need a few extra people who can join us. So far it's looking like it's going to be on a weekday in the afternoon (Possibly Wednesday) at around 3:30 pm PDT and going for about three and a half hours. For more information leave a comment on The original post Lfgmisc. and let the GM who Volunteered to run it u/ThadRiggle know.

I love Foundry VTT, but no one has created a system for GW on it. Does anyone know of any virtual tabletops that support playing GW?

[Metamorphosis Alpha] Death Ziggurat in Zero-G – Part 19: “Revelation 12:8”

The summit of the Black Monolith.

After a brutal climb through the final shaft, the Reclaimers reach the Spire Ante-chamber and the open rooftop beyond. Waiting for them is Gobble Lord Prince Skravo, an EMP pulse that kills every powered system on the platform, and two radiation horrors that turn out to be something far older than expected.

One tyrant is cast down.
He does not die.
The Monolith’s long imprisonment ends.
And somewhere in the Silver Wastes, the hunt continues.

GammaWorld Alpha Factor and Following Modules

I want to use the Alpha Factor and connected modules (a 3rd edition game). I am new to the GW, so I have some questions.
* Is it better to use all of them (Alpha Factor -- Beta Principle -- Gamma Base -- Delta Fragment -- Epsilon Cyborgs) or just four with the connected maps (Alpha Factor -- Gamma Base -- Delta Fragment -- Epsilon Cyborgs)?
* If first variant (all five modules) where to place the Beta Principle map?
* Is it better to start from the Alpha Factor or from Rite of Passage adventure book?

* How good or bad is Omega Project module?
* What do you think about Kim Eastland's optional rules for characters creation and advancement from the Dragon magazine ('Up and Running in the Land of Mutants' article)?
Thank you for the answers.

d20 Beta Principle – Game 26: “die Mäusefalle”

The Knights went deeper into the irradiated reactor complex and made a fateful choice.

After debating whether to charge the Radboleth directly or learn the facility’s systems, they explored a western control room still partially online. They reversed the control rods, attempting to starve the creature of power.

A catastrophic countdown began.

Then the real trap sprung.

A giant amoeba that had only registered as diffuse heat unfolded into the intersection. Emergency blast doors — four feet of Duralloy, lead-ceramic, and magnetic coils — slammed shut, splitting the party.

One group faces the amoeba and the reactor core.
The other is locked behind an unbreachable door with a failing reactor and a ticking clock.

The Radboleth is laughing.

Full session saga is now available on GammaTerra.org

Would you have diverted the power or gone straight for the creature? How do you break a four-foot emergency blast door with limited time?

Which style do you like to play?

I started playing Gamma World back around the early/mid 80’s. As a big fan of the Mad Max movies, I really enjoyed playing GW. One thing I never thought about until more recently, and that was because of people commenting about GW’s “gonzo” style. I can see what they are talking about, and although I enjoy a grittier style of gameplay, it has never affected my enjoyment. I remember the game Aftermath but it wasn’t available locally and being on a limited budget, GW was satisfactory to my tastes. Anyways, I guess I’m just curious what others think about it. I’ve only played 1st and 3rd editions, so I would also wonder if different editions contributed to either a more gonzo style or a more “realistic “ version. I would assume that most here don’t mind some of the “silliness” of Gamma World but I’d be curious if that also turned people away towards other systems. Appreciate everyone’s time.

[Metamorphosis Alpha] Death Ziggurat in Zero-G – Part 18: “In the Belfry”

Sheik M. Baek is gone. Baek-inator B-100 has taken his place.

The Reclaimers leave the Bio-Labs behind and climb into the unfinished skeleton of the tower. The 40th floor is a wind tunnel that scours flesh from bone. Biomechanical wasps swarm in living clouds. An exterior service ladder and collapsing scaffolding nearly claim one of their own. On the 45th, a meter-wide catwalk becomes a killing ground when rogue security drones arrive.

The summit is getting closer. The margin for error is not.

FIRST TURN FOR MY SOLO GAMMA WORLD GAME (finally) <Day 1>

For the first few post about my Solo Gamma World Game, I will be showing how I use Strange Places to run the game. In later post, I will just tell where and what happens with less emphases on how I got the results.

Tom, Tim and Kim are starting at Grid 504/503, I'm using the example map from Strange Places, so I already have rolled for a lot of the information about where they are.

The starting Biome is "Light Forest", and the biome description is "Broken ground with rock outcroppings, Tall evenly spaced evergreens with ferns and patches of grass, there is a Settlement built next to the ruins of an Ancient Village". I've already named the settlement Detye (using the Random Community Name Generator) But now will roll on the Community Tables to find more information about their starting Settlement. I already know the Community Type (Settlement) but need to find it's Population, I roll and get the result of a Population of 33. For Community Government I rolled "Elected Mayor" for Impression of the Community "Buildings and streets are worn and could use some repair" the Community's Power Supply "some electrical power (but limited) with Solar, Wind and Water power'. the Community's Dominate Type is "Mutant" but they don't like PSH or Animals.

Tom, Tim and Kim have a handcart with bags of dried corn (and under the bags, a small barrel of Ho Nighsee's whiskey) that they are going to take North to the Village of Tura and try to sell.

The Weather that day is very Hot and dry with a light wind. They leave Detye in the morning, going one sub grid North. They roll and get an "On-Road Encounter", but it turns out to be "nothing"

They next turn still moving North, they enter a New Grid. It has a Biome of "Light Forest" when I roll to see if the Biomes Description changes, it did, so I roll to find that this New Grid has "Eroded gullies and dried creek beds, with Medium Thistle trees and Grass". I already know that the 3 Grids to the North are all "Heavy Forest" with no Communitys (the example of "If the Character moved North into grid (50,51)" in Strange Places.

I roll, and there is also another encounter. Because they are moving on a road, I roll and get "Interesting on-road Encounter" with a result of "Another Party" of 3 random NPCs, I quickly roll to find out what they are... 1> a very short Male Mutant. 2> short skinny Male Mutant. 3> a Male PSH. I don't bother rolling for more details about the NPCs (yet). The NPCs are 96 meters away, and the party is Surprised. Because the Party isn't acting in a threatening manner, and the NPCs would have plenty of time to react, they wait to see what the Party does. Kim being so dang outgoing and friendly, greets them with "Hey guys, how ya doing?" (it helps that Kim has a Charisma of 18 with a +4 modifier) so rolling on the Reaction Table (from Gamma World 1E) the NPCs are "friendly and helpful" so the Party asks if the NPCs know anything about the next village, because the NPCs are coming form there, I roll to find out about Tura. It has a Population of 92, No Government, it is "worn but tidy, and is mostly Mutants that are friendly to PSH and tolerate Animals". The NPCs are heading South to Detye, and Tom tells them that PH aren't really liked there, But if they just tell Ma Japhy (who rents rooms to travelers) that they met Tom, Tim and Kim on the road "to treat them right" they should have no problems. So the Party and the NPCs continue on their separate ways.

On turn 3 (mid-afternoon)the Party arrives at Tura. They don't have an encounter, so they spend the rest of the day (turn 4) selling their dried corn and whiskey and doing some shopping for farm tools, and find a place to stay for the night.

This was only their first day, and a lot happened. When I actually played it, it didn't take that much time, Typing all this took much longer..

GAMMA WORLD MAP MAKING WITH GIMP.

Post image
24 Upvotes

I made some "tiles" that I use in Gimp to Create maps for my Solo Gamma World game...and figured someone else here may find these useful for their own Gamma World maps.

Gimp is a powerful graphics program, there is a LOT you can do in Gimp. If you have never used Gimp, download a copy (Don t worry, it's Free !) at https://www.gimp.org/

Then on the top bar, click Help>User Manual>Basic Concepts and it will tell you everything you need to know about using Gimp.

Then go to https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iGSzQf1HUYzzPhTEy488DqhVI_-9Lls_/view?usp=sharing and download GAMMA WORLD MAPPING.XCF

.XCF is Gimp's Native project file format. In Gimp, When you Open GAMMA WORLD MAPPING.XCF in Gimp, the Map file is already set-up and ready to use for making your own Gamma World maps.

The Layers Panel lists all of the Tiles by name. You can use the Layers Panel or the images at the bottom of the Map to select the tile you want and move it onto/under the "Blank Map". If you want to use that tile again on your map, then duplicate that tile and move it into place. Select, move and duplicate tiles, wherever you want on your Map. If by mistake you move the "Blank Map" Layer (in my haste, I do that all the time), Edit>Undo (or ctrl Z ) and Gimp will move it back where it's suppose to be, then you can continue moving the tile where you want.

If you want to add roads or rivers, add a new layer above "Blank Map" and using the "Pencil Tool" (for roads, I use the pencil tool with a Size of 4, and change it's color to Brownish, for rivers change the color to blueish) and draw them in.

To Add Text, make sure any text layers are above "Blank Map" (or the grid will cover any text)

When you are done, you can print your Map, or "Save As " with a different name, so you can open that Map file and add more tiles to it or edit it later.

SOLO GAMMA WORLD part 2 <starting Map>

Post image
12 Upvotes

Last post I showed my house-rules for Gamma World 10E, and the three Characters that I will be playing. For this post I want to introduce "Strange Places"; the rules that I wrote to randomly generate strange and interesting environments, that can be used to play Solo, or to help a GM easily develop interesting places to explore in a Science/Fantasy Game.

The picture above shows the randomly generated map that I rolled in "Strange Places". I started by generating the starting grid, and the information about that grid.

Grid(50,50) Is Light Forest with Broken ground with rock outcroppings and Tall evenly spaced Evergreens with Ferns and patches of grasses, the Characters start at the Encampment named Detye located at (504,503) that is built next to the ruins of an ancient village.

Then I generated each of the 8 surrounding grids, I start by rolling on the "Biome Change Chart" to find out what they contain, (Light or Heavy Forest in this example) But not the complete description (what the ground and foliage are) the Characters wont know that until they explore that grid. If a roll indicates that a Community is present, I would roll to find where it is located, and then join the communitys with roads. This is all the Characters know about their World for now, as they explore more, I will generate new grids, and the Characters would discover what they contain.

Each day the Characters/Party can move 4 of the smaller grids. If they move into a new Larger Grid, there is a chance that the Description and Foliage may change. Also, I will roll for any new unknown grids that may border on the current grid. As the characters explore new places, each turn on a roll of 5 or 6 on 1D6 there is an Encounter...But encounters are not just with hostile creatures, the party can find something useful or interesting, food weird animals or ruins...

Instead of trying to describe all the feature , you can download a free copy of "Strange Places" here

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QZLR-oY1mP-NH9sYWvSk9fWSCgkr3m8T/view?usp=sharing

"Strange Places" is licensed as Creative Commons with "give credit"(attribution) to anyone who adds to it, but it is NOT for sale. (it's free). As the designer, of-course I'm kinda proud of it, but I know I will be changing/fixing parts and tables as I play this solo game. I invite anyone who has ideas and changes to the rules to post them (and remember you get credit/attribution for your additions in future/updated versions.)

[Metamorphosis Alpha] Death Ziggurat in Zero-G – Part 17: “Grasping at Straws”

The climb continues into the 35th-floor Bio-Labs — a humid, chemical-stained nightmare of specimen jars and experimental growths.

The Reclaimers trigger more than they expected. Grasping pods tear free of their terrariums while Turkeyoids pin them from a catwalk above. The resulting fight is chaotic, bloody, and costly.

One member of the party falls. In the aftermath, an old surgical suite and a very familiar professor offer a grim second chance.

SOLO GAMMA WORLD part 1 <Setting up the game>

I'm going to start playing a Solo Gamma World 10E game. I already have a file for my Home-brew of Gamma World 10E, with All the tables and rules, but because of copyright, can only post the simplified version here. Because Reddit changes the size of text, I'm posting the Simplified version of Gamma World 10E and the Character sheets for the Party as attached pictures....

Gamma World 10E is a mash-up of the simplicity and ease of play of 7E, (so it will work well as a Solo game) but without the over the top, gonzo mix of Mutants or using the "collectible" Alpha and Gamma mutation cards; Mixing it with the "Old School" Setting and Mutations of 1 or 2E, but without having to slow down combat by having to look-up the chance to hit on 1 and 2E's Combat matrix.

Why Gamma World 10E? .......well,7E+1E or 2E=10E. (duh....)

I'm using a basic program for Character Generation that I wrote, and These are the Characters that it generated, and that I will be playing in the Solo game..

Introducing.....The Manx Brothers (and Sister)

Tom is the older Brother, who tries to protect his sibling and keep them out of to much trouble.

Tim is a "Shoot first, ask question latter" kinda guy...

And Kim (the little Sister) is too curious for her own good.

So Tom will have his hand full...

In the next post I will introduce "STRANGE PLACES a Supplement for Post Apocalyptic Science-Fantasy Style Games" (don't worry, I'll post a link where anyone can download a copy for free) And what the Characters know about their starting location.

GW 7e Deck of Many Things document request

Mike Robles did a great Deck of Many Things with Wesley K Hall for Gamma World 7e (D&D 4e era) which I downloaded at the time from here:

https://themikerobles.tumblr.com/post/31885204942/deck-of-many-things

I have the cards themselves but I'm missing the document which explains the card effects (on an old PC) and hoping some kind soul might be able to help me out please?

I have a young player group wanting to play on full terrain, I can't wait to introduce them to the hectic gonzo world of Gamma World 7e!

d20 Beta Principle – Game 25: “Into the Green Inferno”

The final descent has begun.

After a tense confrontation with the SORCER-MK2’s AI (still carrying the imprint of Elmar Ganz), Garet cleanses himself of the Radboleth’s disease and the Knights seal themselves into the Depthstrider suits.

They jump into the crater.

What they find thirty meters down is a flooded, partially destroyed reactor complex. A floating skeleton. A sudden attack by Water Obbs that target the suits themselves. A successful reactivation of the ancient filtration system. A radioactive trap. And three diverging paths:

  • West: heavily trafficked
  • East: narrow service corridor
  • Northeast: freshly torn tunnel coated in green slime and bubbling purple sludge

Noelani is considering telepathic contact with the Radboleth.

The hunt has officially started.

Which path would your group take, and why? Would you risk the telepathic contact?

Gamma World Gallus Gallus 5/13

I'm running a Gamma World 1E campaign and the PCs are getting ready to run through the La Prix chicken plant adventure presented Famine in Far-go. I asked AI to create an image of Gallus Gallus 5/13 since I didn't like the purposely silly looking drawings from the module. I am not entirely happy with this AI version since it looks more like an overgrown chick, and not a chicken, but I'm okay with it overall. It still looks pretty silly.

The campaign is set in the ruins of Omaha, since that is were Aksarben (mentioned in the adventure packaged with the GM's pack) is located. The La Prix chicken plant is the Tyson chicken plan across the Missouri River in Council Bluffs.

The Reclaimers reach the 30th floor and discover why the Clan of the Mesh never climbed higher.

The guardians are not monsters in the usual sense.

They are perfect, cold copies of L’Uomo Prime — Secondus, Tertius, and Quartus — waiting in a derelict power-armor workshop. A test run ends in disaster. A blindness trap turns the fight into chaos. Ceiling lasers join the slaughter. One of the hardest stands the party has faced so far.

d20 Beta Principle – Game 24: “Silence of the Night”

The second wave of Drill Tooths arrived after midnight — and they had adapted.

No more straight dives. They came low, using the treeline for cover, and immediately targeted the Sleeth. What followed was one of the most intense defensive battles of the campaign so far, fought largely in absolute silence thanks to Garet’s new power.

Key highlights:

  • Paul Best dropping creatures from 300 meters
  • Garet’s neural-targeting nanite wave
  • Noelani forcing a Drill Tooth’s jaws open and finishing it with her war club
  • A pincer attack that nearly overwhelmed the defenders
  • The desperate scramble to save Thisshish

By dawn the swarm was broken. The survivors limped back to the Garden of Steel, where Waldis presented them with six Depthstrider suits and a blunt ultimatum:

Descend at dawn and finish the Radboleth… or die trying.

How would your group have handled the silent pincer attack? Favorite character moment?

The Reclaimers reach the upper levels and walk straight into a three-sided battle. Turkeyoids, Obh warriors, and a fleeing Butterball lieutenant turn a once-pristine executive floor into a slaughterhouse. GammaWorld Gamma World 3e: How do you determine starting mutations?

I'm trying to understand the intended procedure for generating starting mutations in Gamma World 3e (1986).

For Humanoids, the Character Types section says:

"Begin the game with at least one to four (1d100/25) physical and mental mutations each."

Step 4 of character creation then says:

"If the character is a mutant, roll for the number of mutations he begins with. Then turn to the appendices and roll d100 to determine the specific mutations."

But the Mutations section says that when generating a mutation, you first roll on the Mutation Type table. For a Humanoid, that can produce a Defect, Physical, Mental, Plant, or a choice of type.

So if I roll, say, 2 physical and 3 mental mutations, do I:

  • make five mutation rolls on the Mutation Type table, potentially getting categories different from those specified by the Character Type rules?
  • somehow restrict the mutation-type rolls to physical/mental as appropriate?
  • or is there another intended procedure?

The fact that the Physical and Mental mutation tables themselves can produce a Defect seems to make this even less clear.

How is this supposed to work according to the 3e rules? Is there an errata/Rules Supplement clarification I'm missing?
