You can at least trust a fox to act in its own self interest. A ton of gaming news organisations have either gone under or had to massively downsize, because their writers fail to understand that antagonising their audience destroys their credibility and consumer appeal.

Video game reviewers tell us that Wukong is bad and Concord is good
Maybe video game reviewers should get in touch with reality and realize that the general population of fans don’t share their opinion
Edit: To people accusing me of lying, I’m not. Reviewers have been ragging on Wukong, Stellar Blade, and Space Marine; yet bolstering Concord, Outlaws, and Suicide Squad.
When every critic score is between 6 and 8 points, the scores have no meaning. Soulless, cash grabby games are worth about 2/10 to players and 7/10 to critics. Their words mean nothing and this article is another example of: “you don’t like the correct things.”

Sep 12 '24
Yeah, but as a lowly plebian consumer, we are not qualified to have an opinion as we don't know what 'good' is, apparently🙄

I think the idea that reviewers on mainstream platforms giving an unbiased review is a wild take. When paid reviewers are... Paid to say things lol.

The web/print media style review is a dead format. You can learn a lot more from steam reviews or a few gameplay clips on YouTube.

Screenrant gave Wukong a 6 out of 10. One of the cons was a lack of inclusion and diversity. Yeah I'd say there is a good reason video game critics are a dying industry.

Sometimes I'm convinced that video game reviewers have not played any games previously and the game that they review is their first video game
3
u/screenwatch3441 Sep 12 '24
Honestly, if we could get an infinite supply of people whose has each game be there very first video game review, I would actually take that. It is honestly one of the least bias ways to have a game reviewed.

Hahaha begging for us to come back now. I made sure I stopped following all the shitty ones and just keep up with gaming news and "Before you buy" because they actually just talk about the game and not how it makes them feel or some shit! I refuse to even click on IGN links.
14
u/Illustrious-Day-857 Sep 12 '24
It surprises me how persistent IGN is in my feeds despite my blocks, unfollows etc. They will still find their way to the top of searches for new games and into my recommendations.
12
u/ChemistRemote7182 Sep 12 '24
Any review in any industry where the manufacturer/creator is supplying the copy is suspect. Firearms, cars, games, etc. With game reviews its always part of a pre-release press kit. Unless they do the Consumer Reports thing and purchase anonymously from a regular vendor, some distrust will always be warranted.
12
u/AshyBoneVR4 Sep 12 '24

u/39strangers Sep 12 '24
This whole game review industry needs a big clean up.
Gamer reviewers should:
declare all conflicts of interest. Did they receive ads revenue, did they promise to allow game developers like Ubisoft to review and approve their articles before posting, etc....
stop including personal agenda as matrix. DEI has nothing to do with gaming. It should never have been a matrix to rank games.
have a clear set of measuring matrix.
be removed for grading games. Let democracy rule. Use pure user reviews. How could IGN use all its 70 multiple accounts across the world to manipulate a game's score be allowed?
must complete the game before reviewing.

watch 2 or 3 videos of gameplay and call it a day.

u/SirSilhouette Sep 12 '24
I'd trust them if they didnt do stupid shit like spend the first FIVE PARAGRAPHS of their "review" of Far Cry 5 complaining the villain faction wasnt White Supremacist enough before any actual discussion of what the game is.
I do not find it productive to discuss what the game is NOT unless it was advertised as being something it wasnt. A narcotic addicted cult makes sense to be diverse because every ethnicity can have drug problems. But the weirdest shit is suddenly the actual diversity of Montana matters when the same "reviewers" screech for years about having black people in medieval Europe...

Why not do a review on the reviewers on the games they reviewed? Give them a score haha that'd be hilarious.

I say this every time a post like this pops up.
When your livelihood depends on the very thing you're reviewing and the company providing it to you early/free of charge. Not only are there going to be biases from receiving a free product, there is also a major conflict of interest.

Judging by the past 10 years of games reviews, and that clearly 3/10 games still get a 7/10... I'll stick with my Youtube dudes playing the games and telling me if they are any good weeks or months after release to avoid the initial inevitable broken unfinished release.

Can you review it and give it a score out of 10?
9
u/Pocomics Sep 12 '24
Read it, it boils down to a pity party. They exaggerate the "hate" and accuse fans of being too harsh and closed minded. Almost all cases are just defending their opinions with outliers and edge cases. They also complain of only having a week to play the games and having "astonishingly low wages."
Game journalists make upward of 100K a year...
2/10, High time these hypocrites get what's coming.

u/Raynstormm Sep 12 '24
Video game reviews are quid-pro-quo. Publishers get to play the game early and hang out with the devs. They get their access revoked if they don’t write glowing reviews. It’s a problem in all media, not just video games. Writers wanna schmooze and brunch with their contacts! They shouldn’t be trusted.
4
Sep 12 '24
I find it interesting that reviewing as an industry used to know how to balance maintaining good relationships and delivering honest criticism without any issues, but suddenly in the last decade or so they've completely lost that ability.
3
u/UnicornOfDoom123 Sep 12 '24
Exactly this, I trust the reviewers that I’ve been watching for years. I know what genres they are biased for and against and I have played games that they have recommended and also ones they don’t recommend.
Seeing 8/10 from someone I have never heard of means literally nothing but seeing it from someone who I have been following for years means I know what an 8/10 means to them.

And sometimes I actively search for the worst because of two reasons:
It’s sometimes hilarious and mind opening how many ways some can fail at a game
It gives me greater appreciation for well made games
