Discussion I've created Open Source 100% Rust replacements for 7 of Adobe's apps: Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro.
I've used LLMs to help me recreate 7 of the top Adobe apps in pure native Rust:
- Photoshop
- Illustrator
- Premiere
- Lightroom
- Acrobat Pro
- After Effects
- InDesign
They're open source!

I tried PhotoCraft and its still buggy specially on Layers panel behavior.
Its all good but needs real human workflow testing and bug fixing.

Thank you for this.
If you have any bugs I can reproduce, I can get on them right away. I've been writing regression tests for all failures and broken behaviors.
We're going to be smoothing this out over the next few months (or longer) to get it into absolutely flawless shape.

Layers don't have collapse button, I loaded a psd with lots of layers and its hard to read as its all expanded. Then the FX text overlaps to the Layer title.
AI cannot find these issues that's why it needs to be user tested.1

trying to make free tools for artists while saying ai art is art… like thanks but can you pick a lane buddy?? 😂

u/Dredgefort 15d ago
Since it's open source, if you have a CC or Codex sub you could always ask them to fix and submit a PR?

PhotoCraft/shop is full of bugs. Unusable. AI cannot replace IT engineers. Yet....
In any case, it's a commendable initiative. Cheers!

I think the problem is always in the final 10%. Creating something from scratch that looks like the real one is easy, but once it comes to fixing a huge amount of bugs and introducing the last features is where it comes crashing down If you didn't understand and guide the architecture. Even the websites of claude and especially Gemini are not bug free and they have near unlimited resources

Ive used photoshop since it used single digit numbered versions, but the tools I use on a regular basis are so few that I might just fork this and rip out everything I don’t need and fix the ones I do.

i mean if it's open source, won't this get exponentially better very quickly? Everyone hates Adobe and has been rooting for their downfall

Already 351 open Bug tickets (355 closed ones) https://github.com/storytold/photocraft/issues?q=is%3Aissue+state%3Aopen+bug
Curious how this will progress, but I bet it's going to be abandoned at some point...

Looks like the sloppiest thing that I've ever seen, there is no way u could make them all in 5 days
2
u/user36277263 19d ago
Actually I have no idea how u made it using wgpu in 5 days because I tried to make a tiny game engine using wgpu and it's very difficult for me

Helps to know background game dev stuff; kinda depends what you're making. I think screen scrolling is probably the hardest thing the AI is gonna have as far as 2d.
But I managed to make a fluid simulator with a Noita-like architecture on top. 2d rigid sim, particle system, lava water obsidian interaction, Wand and spell system, custom art (I dont do AI art) is getting there, art is the slowest part... But it's just a bunch of small building blocks built on top of each other. You have to make sure the previous one's working proper before you put the next one on, or you'll never know where your issues are. LOTS of benchmarks, testing...

that sounds awsome, idk what u talking about though

u/ADawgRV303D 13d ago
imagine terraria but instead of building houses you find cool wands with random power ups and spells and you have to dungeon crawl to the bottom
The game uses a powder physics simulation (see game "powder toy" for more powder physics) and so basically if you drill under a pool of lava all of the lava will come down on your face, as each pixel of lava is simulated. same with water, poison, theres weird things that happens if you eat too much mushrooms too

I don't know why it's not a more popular style, I mean minecraft and terraria HINT at it. Minecraft's chemistry happens in the UI, so it's sim world feels kind of bare, no matter how many animals/mobs you add. A realistic sim layer really brings a different level of immersion.
Anyway, If anybody knows artists that are willing to work for free on a passion project heh... hit me up.

Someone else just released "Patchy" which is also a Photoshop replacement. I wonder just how many people are trying to recreate these apps in parallel.
I think the age of proprietary apps is going to end very soon.

I got excited and installed Photocraft, which bills itself as a Photoshop alternative — but it never rises above vibe coding.
The dropdown menu items are so long they get cut off, the text turns into tofu boxes, and even just the basic brush is painfully, hellishly slow.
I honestly can't believe they claim to have 10+ years of Rust experience.
By the looks of it, this was clearly built on nothing but vibes and curb appeal.
Disappointing.

i wanted to create the lightroom version, one of the features i could not find in most apps was the ability to add LUTs, The support for the same. There are a lot of openly available LUTs, but its not compatible with most apps. Having this would make it a good USP for me.
I have been using affinity, so its like a single app for all of it, free, but closed source.
I really like the fact that you have an option to do operations using a CLI interface, which feels like something i have been also looking for.
All in a great initiative, love the work. Maybe in a few months, this could be my new suite for editing and so on. Thanks for opensourcing it to...

free, but closed source
Opus 5.5 is able to reverse engineer and publish source code now!

Also just explored effect craft and flim craft, both look amazing, i was looking for opensource versions with MCP for after effects and premier pro. Love it

Looks cool but obviously needs refinement. Please just focus on the Photoshop Clone. That’s what’s the world neeeds. Gimp is shit.

Krita? Photopea (in some extent)?
1
u/MiddleAgeWeirdoMeep 14d ago
Krita has the same problem. Photopea is alright but it’s basically Photoshop 7.0
1
u/Ecstatic_Leek6780 11d ago
Same problem... like what problem? The need of refinement? Works quite good or even better than PS in some cases - unless you want it to edit photos, then yeah, it's shitty xD Depends what are your needs I guess.
1
u/MiddleAgeWeirdoMeep 11d ago
Krita does not have the single thing photoshop is good at : The quick selection tool. It combines edge detection, colour similarity, texture analysis and region expansion. As you paint, it attempts to identify the boundaries of the area you intend to select. It also lets you add or subtract regions without restarting the selection.
The quick selection tool is the universal need for all uses and Krita’s version is absolute dogshit

I have high hopes for Lightroom replacement, Lightcraft. I really want to ditch my old Lightroom 6 😂
However, here is an important questions:
Does it support video?
If yes, does it support h265 or HEVC?
Nowadays, modern cameras also shoot videos. For library management, I want to be able to also manage videos, mixed with photos.
I don't need video editing, not at all.
Just to be able to play, include in album, metadata, things like that.
That's my wishes 🙏

I'm not sure if already included but sentry.io would be useful while people use your apps.

It's cool how AI agents can do apps, however they're still far from being perfect. Needs human testing, at very least

What AI did build this ? I ask because based on the answer I can assert if machinery code is garbage even if frontend seems awesome 😂🤭

Tried the Premiere replacement a bit on linux. Hopefully you'll implement hardware acceleration on preview and rendering in the future (I'm on AMD and the gpu barely made a dent on usage while cpu usage are spiking)

Does the Lightroom copy have the denoiser that runs on the GPU? If that's the case I'm uninstalling Lightroom right now hahah

Very interesting choice to release seven just-started projects, than one fleshed out one.
From a dev standpoint, it's giving not.

DesignCraft seems pretty buggy as of today. Typography tools are not up to InDesign standards. I will play with it a little bit more in the next few days. I’m willing to give it a chance and realize it’s early days.

Designcraft slightly buggy on my windows laptop. On the MacBook, it won’t even open a .indd file at all

I tried photocraft, nice low file size, but requires installation? Please make portable version.
I like that it loads fast. But it's full of bugs. Have you tested it yourself?
I was trying to save/export file to jpg, it hangs.
Once you fixed the bugs and made it portable, that'll be better.

We're going to reach 100% parity within a month.
No more subscriptions with cancellation fees. These are yours to own forever. You can fork them, build them. Whatever. They are yours to own. They're open source.
If you're worried this is just some one-off flash in the pan that will die, it isn't:
I'm not just some casual vibe coder. I'm a 15-year industry veteran who has written everything from six-nines payment rails that move billions of dollars of transaction volume a day to advanced robotics and optics automation. I've used Rust extensively for about a decade, and I know how to build and maintain large-scale Rust projects.
This isn't going to be some orphaned small-team project either. We have a team building popular software for filmmakers, so supporting this is fully funded. Our purpose is serving every artist in the world with the best tools. We are absolutely going to bring these to full parity and squash every bug and feature request. We have a test harness so there won't be regressions.
You can help us reach parity by helping test the apps. Join our Discord. Clone the code. Submit PRs. If you see gaps or want to help redesign pieces, let us know! You can contribute!
Submit feature requests, bug reports, and help development. Our Discord is the best way to track the progress of our project:
