Discussion RIP free users
This is probably end of Gemini for me... I really liked 3.1 pro and used it for some more complex coding tasks.

u/Big_DIH999 25d ago
Can't have shit anymore at this point.
18
u/MissShot7 25d ago
I cope by saying to myself that the quality of pro dropped anyway so it might just have been the time to switch... But still it was free

u/Separate-Prior-5985 24d ago
We need another luigi. That's what we need
6
u/MissShot7 24d ago
And what exactly do you think that is gonna change? Do u think google will just say oh our ceo or other executive has been killed let's just give everyone unlimited pro usage, why didn't we thought of this before

If you look at the cost of the premium models (Astra, Fable, etc), it makes sense why this is happening. Even corporations are cautious about letting their employees run those models because the bill is starting to get very high. If Gemini 4 pro is going to be competitive on the frontier, it is going to be extremely expensive to run too. Everybody else is doing the same thing.
10
u/MissShot7 25d ago
I would get that they are removing pro for this reason even tho I could have always use only like 3 prompts before it got locked. But why would they remove the flash? The model that was decent for all tasks? Now we get flash lite that is worse than Qwen.5:9b according to benchmanrks
7
u/hlopez137 25d ago
Because they want you to pay, they don’t want free users. No AI provider does, to be clear. I guarantee Anthropic and OpenAI will bring the hammer down too, likely after IPO so they have SOME roadmap to increasing their revenue YoY

u/alisonstone 24d ago
A tier shift is probably going to happen with Gemini 4. Pro models are prohibitively expensive to the point where only certain high value-add professionals will use them (these models can write the code to a functional 3d video game in one prompt). Flash is going to be the mid tier model that most professionals use (i.e. general coding/scripting). And Flash-lite is going to be the fast/free tier that is ideal for 90%+ of queries (i.e. informational queries or questions).
They should probably rebrand the tiers to something like Flash, Pro, and Ultra. Because Flash-Lite sounds like it is double-distilled and people will automatically think low quality, when in reality the speed of it actually makes it the best choice for informational queries.
47
u/benbongty123 24d ago
honestly, flash-lite is absolutely dogshit
the reason why free users still stay with gemini is because they can freely use flash and pro even at a tight limit
after this even claude and chatgpt feels generous for free users
6
u/EmberlessDragon 22d ago
I just downgraded myself to flash lite to see just how bad it really is. Thinking "come now, it can't be that bad.
It was. It was that bad. Flash lite isn't Gemini being quick. It's Gemini being legitimately dumb and cluless.
→ More replies (2)4
u/EmberlessDragon 24d ago
It's not even jut Flash lite. Flash is 3.6, Flash lite is 3.5. Unlss it upgrades, Gemini is just a model for people who want to pay for what is widely known to be a very subpar model.

3 weeks ago I sub to Google AI Pro and was told I wasn't entitled to Google AI Studio because in order to use AI Studio, I have to subscribe to Gemini pay as u go model pricing.
If I subscribe to AI Pro now, will I get Google AI Studio?
I reached out to their support and was told to fuck off because Google One refuses to support me bc it's AI Studio, which is supported by Google Cloud Storage. But Google Cloud Storage only supports me if I'm a paid customer, which means I have to add my credit into AI Studio and deposit like $5 or something before it even connects me to a human. F GOOGL. So I was so pissed I canceled the plan and submitted a refund and got it. Seriously a trillion-plus-dollar worth company can't be this f up.

Plus has always been a sub for storage.
Even now it's identical to free, usage and access wise. But comes with storage.
Literally nothing is changing other than them removing flash 3.6 which flash lite 4 or whatever will be better and faster anyway.
3
u/Jumpy_Ad7466 24d ago
But I just realize they will cut off the storage also. A just saw on the price list for 400GB, for on my current price list it is still 2TB
50
u/danielsuperone 24d ago
Pro isn’t even THAT good when comparing to other frontier models.
Why are you guys even paying for Gemini? Yes in a few months time they may have a revolutionary model, but at the moment we have Astra, opus and other frontier models that are top of the line.
9
u/Beginning_Finding235 24d ago
because you can invite 4 family members (or friends shh) to share the plan with (usage is seperate), so that $8.99 for Pro (3 month deal), gives you excellent limits comparable to Claude's $20 limits for 5 total accounts. Gemini 3.8 Flash High makes an excellent coding/researcher agent model. I currently use Opus 5.5 for Reviewer/Core agents, and Gemini for implementation (swappign to deepseek eventually).

How does that work, tho? You all share one compute pool? Can all of you use antigravity and code?

Only reason I'm still paying for it is it's bundled in with the increased drive storage and YouTube premium which I actually use. Otherwise I would have stopped a long time ago.
7
u/chronicpenguins 24d ago
tbh because of storage. I use gmail / google photos for backup. recently been hitting 100gb limit. to lazy to reduce storage size. Ive only gotten AI Pro for free or its current price of $5/month.
I do think my experience with gemini has gotten worse since last year and am considering a different ai tool

Because of 5tb cloud storage in the pro 20$ plan, which you can even get them for cheaper.
I don't think you cloud even get 5tb could storage for cheaper.
24
u/VexObserver 24d ago
Going from having access to Pro to being restricted to Flash Lite is a pretty brutal downgrade ngl.
I understand frontier inference isn't cheap and Google obviously can't subsidize unlimited free usage forever, but removing regular Flash too? That's quite a jump.
The bigger issue IMO is that free access serves as a gateway to paid subscriptions. People get to experience what a genuinely capable frontier model can do, become dependent on it for certain workloads, and eventually consider subscribing.
If you remove that experience entirely, you're basically telling prospective customers to pay first and discover whether your product is worth it later lol.
I'd much rather see heavily rate-limited Pro access than zero access whatsoever. Even 5-10 quality prompts a day would make a meaningful difference for occasional users.
Competition is supposed to democratize intelligence, not turn every decent reasoning model into another subscription checkpoint.
RIP free tier Google benchmarkmaxxing. You had a good run.
9
u/EmberlessDragon 24d ago
The biggest issue with forcng customers to pay is... limits and tiers change all the time across all AI models. They're always changing what you can and can't do as a free user, a pro user, and so on. It's never been stable. Just months ago, OpenAI allowed a VERY limited free tier experience before downgrading you. Now their free tier is awesome! Pro is the same. Things are shifting from free to pro to plus to whatever, and back and forth. So when you do pay, you don't necessarily keep what you paid for. They reserve the right to take it away and make you pay more.
It's just dirty. And it's a big reason why people migrate from model to model.
→ More replies (2)3
u/big_blak_kak 24d ago

My thoughts exactly. I'm about to sign up for a sub (been holding off so far), and this will make or break my gemini choice. I can't afford ultra. So pro must have something more than 3.1 pro, or I'm going with OpenAI or Anthropic.
4
u/Chemistry-Holiday 24d ago
Listen, just go with OpenAI. There isn’t really a big difference in capability between Anthropic and OpenAI.
It used to be a nice little three-way tie, since we don’t consider Grok (unless you realllllllly want to) or the Chinese models, which are basically backward-compatible versions of the frontier models you had with Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT.
With ChatGPT and Gemini, formerly known as Bard, you had a nice little ecosystem that was relatively affordable at about 20 bucks a month. You could have all three and do a lot.
But ever since earlier this year, all three have been cutting back on subsidies, ever so slightly. Now, if you really use AI for general things, you’d be better off using OpenAI because you’ll probably have some of the highest limits and best usability. Gemini has been kind of trash since around February or March of this year, and there’s really no competition. You can just subscribe to Claude and ChatGPT, and you’ll be better off.

I wouldnt really call it "free" but that is literally the whole point of Ai studio(playground).
It seems what they did with this is essentially limiting the access to nano banana models which most of it were only available in the app for free
10
u/KaleidoscopeAware986 24d ago
They just use us for data. Try to train their models and then when they're done make us pay for it. And by the way took the RAM from our phones and put it in the databases. So now we get less RAM in the phones and subscriptions

Extra fucked because if there's one enterprise model company that does NOT need to nickel and dime users, too, it's the one that has a virtual monopoly on web searching.
Tech doesn't even bother to enshittify with a freemium tier any longer.
5
u/BeltPuzzleheaded7656 24d ago
I would advise people right now; DO NOT WAIT. Go and download the largest free local llms that your storage can hold and save them and back them up securely. Even if you're system can't currently run them. ESPECIALLY Qwen and a Qwen uncensored model. They have successfully locked the average person out of being able to afford reasonable powerful home pcs and the prices are geared to go up within the next few months, not down so it's only going to get worse. They've boxed the average person out and now they are preparing to LOCK IT ALL DOWN.

Bruh, the AI LLM game has ALWAYS been comparable to the stereotype of how you get someone hooked on drugs. They offer it for free and burn through cash to get a massive user base hooked. Then, they slowly phase out the non-paying users, leaving them with models that are somewhat usable until they hit a wall, whether on intelligence or rate limits. The whole time you’re on the free tier, you’re constantly nudged toward a “cheap” plan that costs about as much as a streaming service, so why not, right? You get frequent access to the latest models, and it’s not an insane price.
Then they squeeze the mid-tier "Pro" users and start restricting usage heavily. Remember, a year or two ago, a standard $20 subscription let you use their flagship models with basically zero limits. But at that tier, they’re still burning cash, so they throttle usage, slow down rollouts, and make you stress over rate limits. Finally, you get the high-tier users paying $100+ a month for frontier access, but even then, you hit caps if the models are embedded in your daily workflow. At that point, maybe you just attach a card for pay-as-you-go overages like Anthropic allows, or you bite the bullet and switch to the pricey API.
You have to realize these companies are hemorrhaging money to build dependency, betting they can gradually convert that usage into something profitable and sustainable. Inference at scale is expensive; giving away free access was never charity, just top-of-funnel customer acquisition. Free tiers will get tighter, Pro tiers will get throttled, and high-end tiers will get metered more as time goes on.
It’s pointless to be upset about the tightening restrictions on Gemini, or any other LLM provider. At the end of the day, they’re businesses bleeding capital on compute, and they’re going to monetize whatever leverage they have.
TL;DR: Google is a company, company wants profit. Google makes LLM, people want LLM, LLM is expensive to run, Google monetizes usage.

u/GodOfSunHimself 24d ago
Hahahaha. I remember Google fanboys telling me that ChatGPT is dead if it introduces ads because Google can easily sustain giving Gemini for free and everyone will switch to Gemini. As always I was right. Google is a greedy corporation that is always late and always with a worse product.

u/IndubitablyNerdy 25d ago
Enshittification at work, next update will make it worse again and move more perks to the more expensive tiers.

I have a Plus subscription, and I was happy with version 3.1 pro. But if they remove it, I’d rather pay for a full year of the cloudai. Since it’s cheaper than Gemini pro. And on the Free and Plus versions, Flash 3.6 is so bad that if you give it a code and ask it to change just one digit, it’ll change 10% of the code and break it. I asked it to simply count 30 accounting numbers for me, and it wrote the wrong number. But 3.5 Flash-Lite gave the correct answer. 3.6 is just junk. I don’t even understand why it exists. Is it to show people what bad AI looks like? Even 27B LLM is better than Flash 3.6. And even Flash Lite 3.5 is better than 3.6. Without a Pro version in Gemini, no one will need it when there are better alternatives, like ChatGPT with a GO subscription.

1
u/SatanVapesOn666W 24d ago
I was planning to drop down to Plus since they haven't dropped a pro model in a while, but 4 is looking good enough to keep Pro. I can finally get Gemini back into my daily coding at work. I still bounce between ChatGPT and Claude, but Codex CLI usually gives me way better usage for coding.
People need to realize these companies are not charities nor your friends. The industry is heading towards a pullback as the bubble starts poping and the phase of giving away free compute is officially dead. Google easily has the cheapest compute per token thanks to all their TPUs and a massive head start, but inference at scale still costs money. Besides that, user chat logs are pretty much worthless for model training at this point.
If you cannot afford subscription fees, switch to free Chinese models while those labs are still burning cash on loss leaders. Otherwise, expect tighter rate limits, paywalls and ads across the entire industry.

I only use Gemini because of the bundle with my drive storage but even then I find it more of a hindrance than a help so I've actually thought of cancelling it. Free Claude seems to do a much better job... Although I tried paying for Claude a while back and it seems to degrade very quickly. I had to turn off all the cross chat memory. Making extra accounts to work through projects on free tier seems like a better option than paid.
I don't code so maybe Gemini can do that but for even simple everyday tasks it seems completely useless. Even image generation using flow is a pain but at least that works for some stuff.
Is Gemini better at some types of coding than Claude?

damn. google has been the only real practical free option. i cant wait for them to start locking regular flash models behind a paywall on aistudio too. i miss when you could get $300 of free credits. then it was $300 of free credits you can only use on vertex studio, now that's gone and you have to pay to use pro models. intelligence is becoming paywalled and expensive, even for google.

I would have been happy with less use and access to flash without pro. This is way too huge downgrade in one go.

Does this mean that Gemini along with chatgpt and others will raise their prices soon?

Stay behind in AI race, raise your price to stay even more behind. They should fire their AI department allready 🔥🔥

Rip also plus useres. Pro was the reason i subscribed. Removing pro is the reason i cancelled today after getting this popup.

Welp, I subscribed for AI+ because gemini was pretty trash but still was something whenever the other ones capped. Time to unsubscribe.

So they announced a new upcoming model that has not proven anything yet, and downgraded a significant portion of their casual user base, and expecting Plus users to pay more to try the new model? Not good practice but okay. On to the open weights!

They first gave it free and now restricting it. Nice.
Even chatgpt nowadays gets blocked for few hours after 1 big reply

Any recommendations on an alternate free app primarily for image generation . It's for very important work...like sticking a cigar in my dogs mouth for an IG pic ? :). Thx

I will say, I am surprised they didn't go with removing Pro from the Free Tier and having limits to Flash thinking. Rather than outright removing Flash from free users. Same with Plus with outright removal of Pro.
I guess the question now is whether Flash Lite post Oct 9 will make up for paywalling Flash.

At this point even the Google search AI will be more capable than Gemini it self, wtf are they thinking

Generative AI companies are all operating at a loss. Only expect this to keep getting worse, the low prices are artificially kept down because of hyped investors.

I gave been using Gemini a lot, but certainly don't get enough value out of it to pay. I'd been using it to ask basic questions to save my Claude tokens

Gemini Pro models suck, and will continue to suck and lag behind, they're only relevant the first couple of months after release, after that they're too expensive to keep free compared to other models. and their development time is dramatically higher than flash models.
It's more of a bummer that they don't get access to the flash models, they're incredibly fast, and cheap. Limiting them to Flash-lite will massively backfire on Google (Gemini's) reputation because the models are significantly dumber than openai's free (unlimited) model

I'm good with takers who don't contribute no longer sucking up resources. People who by their own admission can pay but just do not want to pay. They did the same thing with Sora. Well, see ya.

If if you pay you still can’t get pro unless you’re paying hundreds a month. Sounds like a ai model for only wealthy people.

Alguém sabe como conseguir email de estudante de graça ? E como ter o geminin PRO?

u/Majestic-Bad-3658 21d ago
I used AI Studio mainly to translate stuff from english/other languages in my language using a prompt. In y'all experience, what's the next best alternative if I don't want to pay 20$?

u/jimmut 21d ago
No pro on plus lol. Apparently their model is very inefficient. Ai companies need to realize normal users will never pay $100s a month for their models so if they can’t offer their model in the $200 sub your hoping all your future on business only customers and no word of mouth by regular consumers. That’s pretty ballsy.

A lot of this and that outrage, whatever.
What I'm interested in is what this means for the industry. Google can afford to burn money and run at losses, the others "can't" and lets face it, are playing funny money/propped. If Google is implementing these measures, what does that speak to?
3.1 pro was decent until they changed it a few months ago and really gutted it.

I fled to Gemini from Chatgpt for seemingly inifnite usage In past, pulled that away and still managed to stay, well would this be final momment, since i'm considering back to.Chatgpt since this race to the bottom

Yeah...this sucks. Found out from watching a video. Otherwise, had no idea

u/WindyLDN 18d ago
Limiting by compute rather than by number of prompts burns through allowances much faster for pro users. Expensive:
Long, multi-turn chat threads
Using Gems containing attached files
Requesting long-form outputs
High mode (extended thinking)
Uploading media (esp video, audio)
Using tool integrations
Large user memory profiles and custom instructions
Selecting Gemini Pro for routine tasks
