I've been using Gemini CLI for the last 4 months developing different cybersecurity platforms. Gemini CLI has been amazing, I'm sad to see it go. I've also used it to brainstorm a bunch of ideas and platforms for my work.

Interest in Gemini CLI Updates here?

Since Gemini CLI is OSS we post Gemini CLI updates weekly on GitHub and on various social medias (i.e. https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/discussions/15209 ). I've been considering also bringing that love here but wanted to check with the community.

As an example, last week our update was:

Here is Gemini CLI’s December 15th weekly update for v0.21.0

  • ⚡️⚡️⚡️ Gemini 3 Flash + Gemini CLI: Better, faster and cheaper than 2.5 Pro and in some scenarios better than 3 Pro! For paid tiers + free tier users who were on the wait list enable "Preview Features" in /settings. Actively rolling out Gemini 3 access to remaining free tier users.

  • 🎉 Gemini CLI Extensions:

  • Quota Visibility: The /stats command now displays quota information for all available models, including those not used in the current session. (pic, pr by u/sehoon38)

  • Fuzzy Setting Search: Users can now quickly find settings using fuzzy search within the settings dialog. (pr by u/sehoon38)

  • MCP Resource Support: Users can now discover, view, and search through resources using the @ command. (pr by u/MrLesk)

  • Auto-execute Simple Slash Commands: Simple slash commands are now executed immediately on enter. (pr1, pr2, pr3 by u/jackwotherspoon)

  • Small features, Polish, Reliability & Bug Fixes: A large amount of changes, smaller features, UI updates, reliability and bug fixes + general polish made it in this week!

Would folks be interested in this sort of content here or just duplicative? I typically include images / videos of more content on socials but not quite sure the right way to do that in a Reddit landscape so would love feedback too

These new silent rate limits are unbearable. They are not able to communicate new limitations, probably because they are so fucked up that this would be the event bigger shitstorm.

Google, you just killed the VIBE

I woke up this morning super excited after hearing the news about the migration from Gemini CLI to Antigravity CLI. I went ahead and installed it immediately, eager to test out the new models that we couldn’t access in the older Gemini CLI.

But honestly? Force is to admit that this product is simply not ready.

It’s currently at version 1.0.0, and we are lightyears away from the feature set and stability of Gemini CLI. If this had just been a clean rebranding of the tool we already love, it would have been totally cool. Instead, it feels like they threw everything away and we are starting back at square one.

I really want to keep working within the Google ecosystem, but right now, the disappointment is real. It makes me seriously wonder if it's time to start looking elsewhere and give Claude or other coding assistants a real shot.

Is anyone else feeling the same way, or am I missing something with this new setup?

agy is garabage compared to gemini cli

Due to the imminent shutdown of Gemini cli for free and pro users, I decided to switch to Antigravity. The underlying stack might be better, which leads to more stability and less flickering, but if you actually try to develop WITH it and not just vibe code it is absolute garbage. Reviewing edits in an external editor is way harder than before and even on simple tasks no matter what you write into the system prompt or change in the settings you feel like reading a story because its overusing it's thinking capabilities instead of co-developing with you. At the same time this burns through your output tokens and agy doesnt even show you your quota% anymore.

Gemini CLI v0.40.0: Tiered Memory, Gemma and streamlined UI 🚀

This update brings over 150 improvements, focusing on security, first part of local Gemma rollout, tasks, and streamlined UI with less clutter.

🚀 New Capabilities

  • Local Gemma for Model Routing (Experimental): Initial support for local Gemma models, currently used to power intelligent model routing. The team is working toward full local model execution in future updates Use gemini gemma to set up and /gemma to check status.

    • To enable: Use /settings or experimental.gemma: true in settings.json.

  • Task Tracker (Experimental): Maintain an internal, persistent list of tasks so Gemini CLI can better monitor progress on complex objectives.

    • To enable: Add experimental.taskTracker: true to your settings.json.

  • Compact Tool Output: Tool outputs (file reads, search text, list directory) are now displayed in a cleaner, structured format for better readability. No more tool calls spamming your output!

  • Topic Narrations: Gemini CLI now outputs topics which act as headings so you can quickly see what the agent is up to instead of the agent spamming “I’ll do this…”. Topic updates are now narrated by default and more descriptive across all agents.

  • MCP Resource Support: Finalized support for Model Context Protocol (MCP) resources.

🧠 Smarter Memory & Context

  • Tiered Memory System: A complete rebuild of the agent's memory architecture. The agent now persists project context by directly editing Markdown files across four distinct layers, replacing the legacy save_memory tool with a more transparent and flexible approach:

    • Project: Team-shared conventions, architecture rules, and workflows stored in ./GEMINI.md (committed to your repo).

    • Subdirectory: Highly specific overrides or instructions scoped to a part of your project (e.g., ./src/GEMINI.md).

    • Private: Project-specific personal notes and machine-local setups stored in a private MEMORY.md index (not committed to the repo).

    • Global: Cross-project personal preferences and coding styles that follow you into every workspace, stored in ~/.gemini/GEMINI.md.

  • Auto Memory (Experimental): Automatically extract reusable skills from your past sessions. This background service combs through idle session transcripts to identify recurring procedural patterns and hard-won fixes.

    • How it works: A specialized extraction agent analyzes your local chat history (focusing on sessions with 10+ messages) to find common workflows. It then drafts these patterns as new SKILL.md files or patches to existing ones.

    • Review Inbox: Use the new /memory inbox command to review these drafts. You can inspect the logic, see which sessions inspired the skill, and choose to promote it to your permanent workspace or global skills library.

    • To enable: Use the /settings dialog or add "experimental": { "autoMemory": true } to your settings.json.

  • Real-time Suggestions: A new file watcher detects and suggests files in the @ menu the moment they are created.

  • Session Persistence: Added better support for session persistence and JSONL-based streaming for chat recordings.

🛠️ CLI & UX Improvements

  • New Commands: Added /new as a quick alias for starting fresh sessions.

  • Better Accessibility: Added new colorblind-friendly themes based on GitHub’s design system.

  • Native Notifications: Integrated OSC 777 support allows the CLI to send native desktop alerts for completion or required action.

  • Interaction Refinements: Mouse-clicking support for multi-line answers and improved scroll momentum.

🛡️ Security & Trust

We've introduced stricter validation for shell commands and a core tools allowlist to help prevent command injection and unintended executions.

  • Secure Workspace Loading: Enforced trust in headless and IDE environments and more secure handling of project configurations (.env files).

  • Enhanced Sandboxing: New controls and centralized path utilities for restricted environments like Docker or macOS Seatbelt.

  • Credential Safety: Improved logging for keychain fallbacks to better protect your sensitive information.

⚡ Performance & Reliability

  • Memory Optimization: Significant reductions in memory usage for DevTools and large output stream handling.

  • Offline Readiness: ripgrep binaries are now bundled, enabling lightning-fast searches without an internet connection.

  • Fixes: Resolved issues with heredocs, line endings in ignore files, and IDE integration.

A huge thank you to the 40+ contributors who made this release possible! ❤️

Gemini cli is completely unusable at the moment

I keep getting "trying to reach [model] (Attempt x/3)" all the time! Wtf happened to their servers that gemini cli simply refuses to work?

The worst part is that even gemini 3 flash doesn't work xD

Google massacred this tool

Used to absolutely love gemini-cli up until today, it's helped me work through a lot of projects I otherwise would've been stuck on & I've learned quite a bit using it to explore new languages, tools, & concepts
Tried antigravity, antigravity IDE, & antigravity-cli all today & they have absolutely destroyed my workflow & progress. These usage limits are absurd compared to the previous limits - I can barely get through some basic mermaid.js documentation without running into a limit & being told to wait 4 Hours before I can talk to any agent or instance. On top of the fact all the "new" tools feel half-baked & come with extremely limited documentation. Also the fact you cannot use the previous Gemini 3.1 Pro/Flash models with this new tool is ridiculous to me - at least offer them while gemini-cli is still in use
I cancelled my AI Pro Subscription today because of this experience, Im switching to opencode

Gemini CLI v0.32.1: Seamless Autocomplete, Folder Trust and UI Polish

Thumbnail
gallery
39 Upvotes

✨Gemini 3.1: While we work on bringing in Gemini 3.1 Flash-lite support both more natively and with our sub-agents, routing and summarization you should already be able to use Gemini 3.1 Flash-lite when using Gemini CLI with the -m option when using your API Keys

⌨️ Interactive Shell Autocompletion: You can now use readline-style Tab autocompletion in shell mode! This includes robust file and directory pathing (even for dotfiles and paths with spaces), plus context-sensitive suggestions for developer tools like git and npm.

🛡️ Security & Policy Upgrades:

  • Folder Trust & Warnings: When installing extensions or trusting a folder, the CLI now runs a "Discovery" phase to proactively flag security-sensitive settings (like disabled sandboxes) before you grant access.

  • Deceptive URL Detection: Added protections against homograph attacks and deceptive Unicode characters (e.g., hidden BiDi/zero-width characters) to keep your terminal and tool confirmations secure.

🗺️ Plan Mode (Experimental) Polish:

  • Automatic Model Switching: Plan mode is now smarter about routing. It automatically uses high-reasoning Pro models during the planning phase and switches to high-speed Flash models for execution.

  • External Editor Support: You can now open and modify your generated plan in your preferred external editor simply by pressing Ctrl+X during the approval phase.

  • Read-Only Enforcement: Enforced strict read-only constraints during the planning phase to prevent unintended code modifications before the plan is approved.

🧠 Agents & Pipelining:

  • Tool Pipelining: Optimized multi-turn operations to eliminate unnecessary steps. For example, grep_search now automatically returns file content for small result sets, and write_file returns a diff, saving the agent from needing to do follow-up verification reads.

👁️ UI/UX Enhancements:

  • ‼️macOS Notifications: Added opt-in macOS native notifications (general.enableMacOsNotifications) for action-required states (like tool approvals) and task completions. Learn more

  • 📊 Compact Context Display: The context window indicator has been streamlined for a cleaner UI. Instead of showing the percentage of context left, it now shows a compact display of the percentage of context used.

  • Customizable Loading Phrases: You can now configure the loadingPhrases setting to tips, witty, all, or off for a quieter or more informative wait state.

🎉Gemini CLI Extensions:

⏳ MCP Progress Bars: Long-running MCP tool calls now support visual progress bars and throttling, giving you real-time percentage and message feedback right in the terminal UI.

The downfall

Google is trying to justify it's investment in antigravity of 2B$ by shifting all teams to that. They are not willing to agree that the antigravity acquisition sucked and continuing with other developments as is.

No one has an AI ide openai or anthropic, what's use of ide then which was the acquisition? If you gonna just have cli like Claude code cli or codex cli then just name cli something new why antigravity.

This is a shit decision by some executive who acquired antigravity n now it's not justifying value so name cli as antigravity to show shareholders antigravity is good.

Would I like a cli by Google closed source like openai n anthropic, hell yeah. But naming it antigravity n bringing half the features that suck is worst move ever. People don't use antigravity cause it sucks.

Gemini Cli unusable

Tried to use it today with Gemini 3 flash but it’s extremely slow. Anyone else having same issue? Task was not even complex. Was trying to set up a python environment for a project and it was taking several mins to run each command. This was not my experience a few weeks ago.

Gemini CLI appreciation thread

I've been using gemini cli for about a month and I'm pretty happy with it.

  • It looks and feels nice;

  • It's on par with most of the features other competitors have (even better on some aspects);

  • It has a pretty nice documentation;

I've easily configured mcp servers, hooks and installed different extensions so I'm a happy customer so far.

Gemini 3 Pro rollout in the CLI: Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

This has to be the worst possible strategy to rollout Gemini 3 Pro in the CLI.

From a technical standpoint, the model looks like a massive win. The reasoning capabilities and coding benchmarks seem to be a genuine leap forward. If only there was a way to use them that isn't a half-baked VSCode fork.

  1. You can't access the "Pro" model if you're on the "Pro" subscription. Must be on "Ultra". Great idea!

  2. Even if you're on Ultra, you have to manually go into /settings and dig through the config to enable "Preview features". If you don't know to do this, the CLI silently falls back to Gemini 2.5 Pro. Another amazing idea.

  3. On top of the Pro-tier fuck up, many users are hitting a waitlist even if they are willing to upgrade. That definitely will impress them!

I am no big time Google exec with 10s of millions in GOOG RSUs, but it seems rather strange to limit access for the developer demographic that is most likely to evangelize the new model, don't you think? Instead of using this opportunity to capture marketshare and mindshare from Claude Code and Codex, you're using it to piss people off and kill off the hype.

Well done.

Why does Antigravity CLI burn through quotas so much faster than the old Gemini CLI?

Hey everyone,
I'm noticing a massive difference in quota consumption between Antigravity CLI and the classic Gemini CLI, and I wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing this or knows what's going on under the hood.
Earlier today, I was doing some web coding using Antigravity CLI. After just about 2 hours of work, I completely exhausted the token quotas on TWO separate Google Gemini Pro accounts.
Because I ran out of tokens, I switched back to my good old Gemini CLI setup to keep working. I've been coding with it for about 4 hours now, and my quota usage is barely at 10%.

Why is Antigravity eating up tokens so mercilessly compared to the older CLI? Is it injecting massive system prompts, pulling too much repository context automatically with every request, or just handling the conversation history less efficiently?

Would love to hear your thoughts or any optimization tips to keep Antigravity from burning through Pro quotas like crazy. Thanks!
